Getting to know your Synology Server Introduction Congratulations on you r purchase of Synology 106 series se rver (“Synology Server”). Synology Server is specially designed for SOHO and ho me users with multiple functions: File Server Windows and Mac users can easily sh a re f iles within Intranet or through Internet .
“Photo S tation” provides easy and fast method to share your photos online. “Download S tation” allows you to download files from Internet through BitT orrent, FTP , and HTTP to Synology Server . Moreover , if you have UPnP DMA connected in the LAN, you can enab le “Multimedia Service” and share the multimedia files on Synology server .

Managing Synology Server Entering Web Management UI There are two options for you to enter the management UI: Using Setup Utility [Windows User] 1. Insert the Inst allation C D in to CD/DV D-Rom Drive. 2. Choose “Synology Assistant” at the Autoup Menu.
5. Cho ose the server you want to manage and click “Manage” to e nter the Web Manag e ment UI. 6. Choose “login as system administrator (admin)”, input p assword and click “Enter”.

Assigning Access Right for Domain Users After adding Synology Server to a Wi ndo ws domain, you can grant domain users’ access right s to the sha red folders on Synology server . Please refer to the “ Accessing Synology Serv er Da ta > Setting Access Control ” sectio n for det ails.
Accessing Synology Server Dat a File sharing service is Synology Serve r's maj or functi on. Administrator can setup access right s for use rs either with Windo ws or Mac to ac ce ss shared f older s.
Administrator-Created Apart from the above system built-in shar ed folders, Administrator can create shared folders on the p age “System > Share d Folder” of the W eb Managemen t UI. Shared folders created by Administra tor can be deleted o r renamed at any time.
Setting Encoding Synology Server uses Unicode to manage f iles. The benefit of using Unicode is to avoid file inaccessibilit y between users who use diff erent languages. However , for users without Unicode sup port on their PC, Administrator can set the encoding method of the files to over come the problem.

Mac User Mac user can use ”Go > Con nect to Server” to choose a Synology Server and access the shared folder o n the server . Through FTP Synology server provides FTP service. Administrator can enable FTP service on the “Network > FTP Service” page of th e Web Mana gement UI.
Please Note: 1. Administrator has the option to adjust FTP Bandwidth or enable Anonymous login. 2. FTP Service does not suppo rt Unic ode. Before enablin g FTP Service, please go to “Network > Win/Mac OS” p age and setup codep age according to user ’s client PC.
Server Backup and PC Backup Solutions Synology Server provides complete backup solutions: 1. By using “Local Backup”, Administ rator can backup Synology Server’s data to external USB or SA T A HDD. 2. By using “Network Backup”, Admini strat or can backup Synology Server ’ s data to another Synology Server .
Network Backup Network Backup allows Administrator to backup Synology Server ’ s data to another Synology Server through net work. Please ensure Network Backup option is enabled on both T arget and Client Server before performing the task. Go to “T ools > Network Backup” p age for det ail info rmation.
Using Synology Data Replicator II, users can: 1. Monitor selected folders on client PC and perform real-time backup when any modification to the file is made. 2. Adjust bac kup versions and r estore points. 3. Restore backup date on S ynology Server to client PC at use r’s preference.
Using Synology Dat a Replicator II After inst allation, double click on the soft ware icon to execute the prog ram. Click on “Help” for detail descrip tion.
Synology Server to a nother Synology Server The data ba cked up to another Synology Server using “Network Ba ckup” automatically includes the “User”, “Grou p”, “Shared Fo lder” settings. When you recover the data, you can cho ose if you want to recover these settings.
Sharing USB Printer Synology Server support s Windows 98 and above users, and Mac OS 9 and above users to share USB Printer . For the detailed set tings on diff erent platforms, please refer to the pag e “Device > USB Printer” of the Web Management UI.
Extra Features Multimedia Service When “Multimedia Service” i s enabled, users who have UPnP DMA (Digital Media Adapter) can browse multimedia files on Synology server .
Web Station Personal or corporate website can be easily setup using “Web S tation.” By integrating with PHP and MySQL, users can also setup onlin e shop. PHP support is turned on by default, MySQL requires manually enabling. Enabling Web S t ation and M ySQL Go to the “Network > Web Service” p age.
Photo Station “Photo S tation” provides easy and fast method to share your photos online. Access right control can be setup to ef fectively manage each albu m. Mail Notification Administrator can enter email address on the page “Network > Mail”. Synology Server will send email to the addre ss whe never an import ant event occurs to notify Administrator . Replacing Larger Internal HDD When the internal HDD st orage is run out, Administ rator can follow the ste ps to replace a larger HDD and keep u sing the original data: 1. Replace the original internal HDD with a large r one. 2. Connect the original HDD to the USB port or eSA T A port.
