Chapter 1 Getting Started Chapter 1 Getting Started Introduction This chapter lists the p arts and accessories for the EDA and explains how to inst all and charge the batteries, replace the strap, an d power on the EDA for the first time.

Getting Started 1 - 7 The standar d cap acity ba ttery (1 900 mAh) fully char ges in less than fo ur hours. The extended cap acity ba ttery (3800 mAh) fully charg es in less than eight hours.

Note that at temperatu res above 35 o C, charging is intelligently cont rolled by the EDA and the c harging accessory in order to ensure safe operation and optimize long -term battery life.
Getting Started 1 - 9 SIM Card GPRS phone service requires a Su bscriber Identification Module (SIM) c ard, or smar t card. Obtain this card from the phone service provider . The card fits into the EDA and can cont ain the following information: • Mobile phone service provider account det ails.

Select the On battery power: T urn off device if not used for check box and select a value from th e drop-down list.

Using the MC70 2 - 9 Keypads The EDA of fers two modular keyp ad configurations: Numeric and QWERTY . Numeric Keypad Configuration The numeric keyp ad contains applicatio n keys, scroll keys, and function ke ys. The keypad is color-coded to indicate the alternate function key (blue) values.

Using the MC70 2 - 13 QWERTY Keypad Configuration The QWER TY keyp ad produces the 26-character alp hab et (A-Z, both lowercase a nd uppercase), numbers (0-9), and assorted char acters. The keyp ad is color-coded to indica te which modifier key to press to prod uce a particular characte r or action.

The EDA is in suspend mode when the screen is of f. For more information, see Powering On the EDA on p age 1-8 .
2 - 20 MC70 User Guide Using a Headset Y ou can use a stereo he adset for audio communication wh en using an audio- enabled application. T o use a headset, plug the he adset jack into the audio connec tor on the side of the EDA. Set the EDA ’s volume appropriately be fore putting the headset on.
Using the MC70 2 - 21 Linear Scanning EDAs with an integrated linear scanner have the followin g features: • Reading of a variety of ba r code sym bol og ie s, incl uding the most popular linear , postal, and 1-D code types. • Intuitive aim ing for easy point-and- shoot oper ation.
2 - 22 MC70 User Guide • Angle Scanning angle is import ant for promoting quick decodes . Wh en laser beams reflect directly back into the scanner from the bar code, this specul ar reflection can “ blind” the sc anner . T o avoid this, scan the bar code so that the beam does not bou nce dir ectly back.
Using the MC70 2 - 23 Imager Scanning 1. Ensure that a scan-enabled application is load ed on the EDA. 2. Aim the scan win dow at the bar code. Figure 2-18 Imager Scanni ng 3. Press the scan button. The red laser aiming p attern turns on to assist in aiming.

Using the MC70 2 - 25 W aking the EDA The wakeup conditions define what actions wake u p th e EDA. These settings ar e con figur able and th e facto ry default settings shown in T able 2- 9 are subject to change/update. Locking the EDA Use the Device Lock feature to prevent use of the device .

3 - 2 MC70 User Guide Security The current Bluetooth specification defines security at the link level. Applicat ion-level security is not specified. This allows app lication deve lopers to de fine security mechanism s tailored to their spec ific need.

Using Bluetooth 3 - 7 Y ou can also use the “tap a nd hold” tech nique to view availab le options. Scroll bars and view options are similar to those on the Wind ows deskt op.

Ensure that the EDA is set to discoverable and connect able. See Bluetooth Settings on pa ge 3-25 . When prompted to bond with the remote device the PIN Cod e Request window appears.
Using Bluetooth 3 - 13 The EDA communicates with the remote de vice and lists the service s under the device name. Using Bluetooth 3 - 19 Object Exchange Push Services Object Exchange (OBEX) is a set of pr otocols that allows sharing objects such as Cont act s or pictures using Bluetooth. T o exchange cont act information with another Bluetooth enabled device: 1. Ensure the EDA is discoverab le and conn ectable.

Using Bluetooth 3 - 23 ActiveSync Using Serial Port Services Use the wireless Bluetooth ser ial port connection for Ac tiveSync just as you would a physica l serial cable connection. Y ou must conf igure the application that will use the connection to the correct serial port.
