14 Recor ding an MD r ight away! Connect to a digital sour ce using an optic al cable (suppli ed) to make digital record ings. 20 G-PR OTECT ION function The G-PRO TECTION functio n has been dev elope d to provide excellent protecti on against sound skippin g during many activ e use s. This function provides a higher level of shoc k protection dur ing playback than the tr aditional one.
21 Various ways of recording T wo ways of connecting to a sound source The input jack of this recorder wo rks as both digital and analog input jacks. Connect the re corder to a CD pl ayer or a cassett e reco rder usi ng ei ther d igita l (opti cal) i nput o r anal og (l ine) in put.
22 Note Track marks may be copied in correctly: • when you rec ord from some CD pla yers or multi disc play ers using digital (optic al) input. • when t he source is in shuffle or pr ogram play m ode while r ecording us ing digita l (optical) inp ut.
23 Recording with analog input (line cable requir ed) The s ound will se nt from the c onnected equipmen t as analog sig nal but will be recorded d igitally on th e disc. 1 Pre ss and slide R EC to the righ t. REC i ndication lig hts up in the di splay and reco rding sta rts.
24 Recording f or long times Select each reco rding mode according to the recording time th at you want. Ster eo re cordin g is po ssible at 2 tim es (L P2) or 4 times (LP4) the normal record ing time. MDs rec orded in mon aural, LP2, or LP4 mode can be p layed back only on M D players o r recorders w ith a monau ral, LP2, or LP 4 playba ck mode .
25 3 Play the soun d sour ce. T o stop recording, press x . The record er remains t he previo us setting of the recordin g mode when you reco rd the ne xt t ime. Notes • It is rec ommended th at you use t he supplied AC power adapt or for long recordi ngs.

28 Recording f rom a micr ophone Connect a stereo micr ophone (E CM-717, EC M-MS907, ECM- MS957, etc. ; not supplied) to the MIC (PLUG IN PO WER) jack. 1 Insert a reco rdable MD a nd the n press and sli de REC to the ri ght. For other operat ions, see “ Reco rding an MD right awa y! ” (page 1 4).
29 Adjusting the recor ding level manually (Manual recor ding) When you record , the sound l evel is adjusted a utomatically . If necessary , you can set the le vel manually . Note Adjust the recor ding level while the r ecorder is in st andby mode. Y ou can not adjust it while recor ding.

39 Connecting to a ster eo system Connect the i jac k of the re corder to the LINE IN jacks of an ampl ifi e r or a t ape reco rder wi th a lin e cable ( RK-G1 29 or R K-G136 , not supplie d). The output is analog. The recorder plays the MD digita lly and send s analog si gnals to the externally conn ected equi pment.
40 Notes • Even when con necting to the e xternall y connected equi pment, the Me ga Bass function is operative. If you do not want the effect of the Mega Bass functi on on yo ur recording or the output f rom the exte rnally connec ted equipment, set “ BAS S ” to “ BAS S OF F ” (page 35).
