Installing the Wireless Barricade g Router 4 Please register on SMC ’ s Web site at www.smc.com The Wireless Barricade g Router is c overed by a limited lifetime warranty. Hardware Description The Router c an be connecte d to the Inte rnet or to a remote site using its RJ-45 WAN port.
Hardware Description 5 (i.e., allowin g these ports to be conn ected to any network device with straight-t hrough cable). The se ports can be connected directly to a PC or to a server equipped with an Ethernet ne twork interfac e card, or to a networking de vice such as an Ethernet hub or switch.

SMC currently offers several wireless network cards, including the SMC2602W and SMC2632W Wireless cards.

For accurate timing of clien t filtering and log events, you need to set the time zone. Sele ct your time zo ne from the drop- down list, and click NEXT.

Configuring t he Wireless Barricad e g Router 32 Fixed-IP xDSL Some xDSL In ternet Service Providers may assign a fixed (static) IP addre ss. If you have been provided with this information, choose this option and enter the assigned IP address, gateway IP address, DNS IP addresses, and subnet mask.

Status Provides WAN connection type and status, firmware and hardware version numbers, system IP settings, as well as DHCP, NAT, and Firewall information.
Advanced Setup 35 Password Settings Use this menu to restrict access based on a password. By default, there is n o password. For security you should assign o ne before exposing th e Router to the Inte rnet. Passwords can contain f rom 3 – 12 alphanume ric characters and are not case sensitive.
Configuring t he Wireless Barricad e g Router 36 Remote Management Remote Mana gement allows a remote PC to c onfigure, mana ge, and monitor the Rout er using a standard Web br owser. Check Enable and enter the IP ad dress of the rem ote host. Click APPLY.
Advanced Setup 37 Dynamic IP The Host Name is optio nal, but may be req uired by some ISPs. The default MAC ad dress is set to the WAN ’ s physical interface on the Router. Use this address when r egistering for Internet service, and do not ch ange it unless required by your ISP.
Configuring t he Wireless Barricad e g Router 38 Point-to-Point Over Ethernet (PPPoE) Enter the PPPoE User Name and Password assigned by your Service Provider. The Service Name is normally optional, but may be required by some service pr oviders. The MTU (Maximum Transm ission Unit) governs th e maximum size of the d ata packets.
Advanced Setup 39 Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP) Point-to-Point Tunneli ng Protocol (PPTP) can be used to join different physical networks using the Internet as an in termediary. Using the above screen allows client PCs to esta blish a normal PPTP session and provides ha ssle-free conf iguration of the PPTP client on each client PC.
Configuring t he Wireless Barricad e g Router 40 Static IP Address If your Internet Service Provider has assigned a fixed IP address, enter the assigned add ress and subnet mask for th e Router, then enter the gateway addres s of your ISP. You may need a fixed add ress if you want to provide In ternet services, such as a Web server or FTP server.
Advanced Setup 41 DNS Domain Name Servers map numeri cal IP addresses to the equivalent domain name ( e.g., www.smc.com). Your ISP should provide the IP address of on e or more domain name servers.

Advanced Setup 43 Wireless To configure the Router as a wireles s access point for wireless clients (either stationary or roaming), all you need to do is define the radio channel, the Service Set identifie r (SSID), and encryption options.

(De fault: Fully Automatic.) Channel : The radio channel throug h which the Router communicates with PCs in its BSS.
Advanced Setup 45 If you are transm itting sensitive data across wireless channe ls, you should en able Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) encryption. Encryption re quires you to use the same se t of encryption /decryption keys for the Rou ter and all of your wireless clients.

Note that Wir ed Equivalent Priv acy (WEP) protects data transmitted between wireless nodes, but does not protect any tr ansmissions over your wired network or over the I nternet.
Advanced Setup 47 Network Address Translation (NAT) From this section you can configure the Add ress Mapping, Virtual Server, and Spe cial Application featu res that provide con trol over the port openings in th e router ’ s firewall.

Advanced Setup 53 URL Blocking To configure the URL Blocking f eature, use the table below to specify the website s (www.somesite .com) and/or keyw ords you want to filter on your networ k. To complete this configuration, you will need to create or modify an access rule in “ Access Control ” on page 50.
