1 Networking T echnology Overview A home network consists of two or more computers that have been connected so th ey can “talk” with each other . Individual us ers can now connect to W eb server s worldwide through the Inte rnet, a global computer network.
2 HomePort al The 2W ire HomePortal residential ga teway makes it possible to create a home n etwork using any of the above technologies. By enabling you to connect the computers in your home, the Hom.
3 St e p 1 Getting S tarted First: Locate your Home Port al key code Find the Before Y ou Start page incl uded in your HomePortal package. This insert will help you determine the key code that you will need to install the HomePortal residential gateway on your first computer .
4 System Requirement s • At least 32 MB of RAM • At least one computer with CD-ROM • 5 MB of available hard disk space for 2W ire HomePortal software • W indows 98, 98SE, W indows ME, W indows NT 4.0 with Service Pack 6, W indows 2000, W indows XP , or M ac OS 8.
5 St e p 2 Connect Y our First Computer to the HomePortal Choose a computer and connection type The first computer you connect to your home ne twork is used to configure the HomePortal residential gateway for proper operatio n. Choose one of the following methods to co nnect your first computer to the HomePortal.
6 . 1. Connect the provided AC power adapter from the HomePortal’ s POWER port to an electrical outlet. The green POWER light on the front of th e HomePortal should come on. 2. Connect the provided Ethern et cable from the LOCAL ETHERNET port on the HomePortal to your computer ’ s Ethernet port.
7 Note: In a HomePortal network, only one W indows 98, 98 SE, W indows ME, W indows 2000, or W indows XP computer can be dir ectly connec ted to the HomePortal r esidential gateway using the USB connectio n. Additional computers may be added to the network using conn ection options such as Ethernet.
8 Install the 2Wire Gateway US B driver Before installing yo ur HomePortal software, you must install the 2W ire Gateway USB driver on your computer . The follow ing screens show the installatio n un der W indows 98SE and may vary somewhat on W indows ME, W indows 2000, and W indows XP .
9 Check your connections W ith your computer completel y started, verify the POWER and HOME NETWORK indicator lights on the front of the Ho mePortal are green.
10 Computers connected with HomePNA access the HomePortal’ s Interne t connection and other computers on the network using existing telephone wiring.
11 Note: Y our HomePNA car d or adapter is not the anal og V90 dial-up modem that may be in tegrated in your computer . Please make sur e t hat you conn ect bo th separately . Check your connections W ith your computer completel y started, verify the POWER and HOME NETWORK indicator lights on the front of the Ho mePortal are green.
12 4. Connect the provided telephone cable from the PHONE LINE port on the HomePortal to a telephone jack with DSL service. 5. Using another Ethernet cable (not provided), connect any additional computers to the hub or switch. 6. Plug the hub or switch into an electrical outlet.
13 If you ar e NOT using a 2W ir e wir e less adapter , you will need to manually configur e your adapter of choice to communicate with the HomePortal BEFORE installi ng the HomePortal soft war e. See Appendix B for detailed configura tion instructions.
14 St e p 3 Install the HomePortal Software Before installing the HomePortal software, it is v ery important that you locate your HomePortal key code and disable any conflicting applications such as firewall and file- and printer-sharing applications.
15 Inst alling the HomePort al Setup Wizard on Macintosh computers IMPORT ANT : If your Macintosh does not have a curr ent W eb br owser , you must install one befor e installing the HomePortal softwar e.
16 St e p 4 Add Computers to the Network Choose a computer and connection type After your first computer is connect ed to the HomePortal residential gateway and your Internet connection has been established, it is time to conn ect the other computers to the network.
17 Note: In a HomePortal network, only one W indows 98, 98 SE, W indows ME, W indows 2000, or W indows XP computer can be dir ectly connec ted to the HomePortal r esidential gateway using the USB connectio n. Additional computers may be added to the network using conn ection options such as Ethernet.
18 Computers connected with HomePNA access the Inte rnet connection on the HomePortal residential gateway and other comp uters on the network using existing telephone wiring. Y ou will need one adapter for each computer that you are connecting thro ugh HomePNA.
19 Note: If you use a 2W ir e wireless adapter (PC car d or USB adapter) for wireless networking, the HomePortal Setup W izar d softwar e automatically co nfigur es it to communicate with the HomePortal during setup, but you will need to in stall the driver .
20 The HomePortal Indicator Lights HomePort al indicator and st atus light s The HomePortal has three indicator lights that can be used to diagnose installation and connection problems. The following tables d escribe how to interpret the POWER , BROADBAND LINK , and HO ME NETWORK lights.
21 Diagnosing connection problems This section describes some connectio n problems you may encounter with your HomePortal home network and provides suggestions for solving those problems.
22 Appendix A 2Wire W ireless Adapter Installation 2Wire Wireless PC Card The W ireless PC Card is a wireless network card that fits into any standard PC Card T ype II slot. A standard Ethernet card requires a cable connection to a hub or a patch panel.

24 Inst alling Drivers For W indows ME 4. W indows locates the best driver for your device. Click Next to continue. 5. After the drivers are copied, click Finish . 6. When the System Setting Change window opens, click Ye s to reboot your computer and complete the installation.
25 Inst alling Drivers For W indows 2000 3. After the driver files are copied, click Finis h . 4. When the System Se ttings Chang e window opens, click Ye s to reboot your computer and complete the installation. 1. Power on your computer and insert the HomePortal Setup W izard CD into your CD- ROM drive.
26 4. When the Locate Driver Files window opens, uncheck Floppy disk drives , select the CD- ROM drives checkbox, and click Next . 5. When the Driver Files Search Results window opens, click Next . 6. When the Digital Si gnature Not Found window opens, clic k Ye s to copy the driver files.
27 Inst alling Drivers For W indows XP 7. Click Finish to complete the installati on. 1. Power on your computer and insert the HomePortal Setup W izard for W indows XP CD into your CD-ROM drive. 2. When the Found New Hardware W izard window opens, select Inst all from a list or specific loc ation (Advanced) an d click Next to continue.
28 4. If the Hardware Installation window opens, click Continue Anyway to copy the driver files. If the Hardware Installati on window does not open, continue to step 5. 5. Click Finish to complete the installati on. 6. T o manually configure th e W indows XP wireless client, refer to Appendix B.
29 2Wire Wireless USB Adapter The W ireless USB Adapter is a wireless networking de vice that is connected to a USB port on your computer using a USB cable. Using the W ireless USB Adapter , yo u can communicate with one or more computers that are equipped with wireless adapters.

36 Appendix B Third-party Wireless Adapter Configuration After your 802.1 1b wireless adapter is installed in your computer , you must configure it to communicate with the HomePortal. This section describes how to co nfigure a variety of third-party wireless Ethernet (IEEE 802.
37 Agere ORiNOCO PC Card - Silver or Gold Consult the documentation provided with your wireless adapter to in stall the Agere ORiNOCO PC Card - Silver or Gold, then follow these steps: 1. From the Start menu, select Programs > ORiNOCO > Client Manager .
38 6. T o identify your network, click Next . The Edit Configuration screen appears. 7. In the Network Name field, enter the word “ 2WIRE ” followed by the last three digits of your HomePortal seria l number , located on the bottom of your HomePortal.
39 13. In the TCP/IP Behavior field, check the Renew IP Address when selecting this prof ile checkbox. 14. Click Finish . The following screen appears. 15. Click OK . Cisco Aironet Consult the documentation provided with your wireless adapter to insta ll the Cisco Air onet adapter , then follow these steps: 1.
40 4. In the Profile Management field, enter yo ur profile name. The profile name identifies your wireless profile, and should be no more than 29 characters in length. 5. Click Apply . The 340 Series Properties screen appears. 6. Select the System Parameters tab.
41 13. Click OK . The Profile Manager screen appears. Y our profile name should now appear in the second line of the Profile Ma nagement field, indicating that your Cisco adapter is properly configured.
42 2. The D-Link Air DWL-65 0 Configuration screen appears. 3. Select the Configuration tab. 4. In the Mode field, enter Infrastruc ture . 5. In the SSID field, enter the word “ 2WIRE ” followed by the last three digits of your HomePortal serial number .
43 Apple AirPort card Note: Requir es AirPort client softwar e r evision 2.0 or gr eater . Consult the documentation provided with your wireless adapter to install the Apple AirPort wireless adapter , then follow these steps: 1. From the Apple pull-down menu, select AirPort to open the Ai rPort dialog box.
44 4. In the Password field, enter “ $” followed by your ten-digit W ireless Encryption Key , located on the bottom of your Ho mePortal. 5. Click OK . Other wireless Ethernet adapters Note: The following steps ar e co mpleted using the configuration pr og ram pr ovided with your wire less adapter .
45 1. Right-click the Wireless Network Connection icon, located in the systray . 2. Select Vie w A vailable W ireless Netwo rks . 3. The Connect to W ireless Network screen appears. In the A vailable ne tworks field, select your wireless access point.
