I NTR ODUCTION 1-4 • User-Definable Application Se nsing Tunnel Y ou may define special applications that require multiple connections such as Inter net g aming, video conferencing, and Inter net telephony . Th e Wireless Bar ricade will then sense the appl ication type and open a multi-port tunnel for it.
I NTR ODUCTION 1-5 • Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol – Provides a secure tunnel for remote client access to a PPTP security gateway. PPTP includes provisions for call origination and flow control required by ISPs.

I NSTALLATI ON 2-5 System Requirements Y ou must meet the following minimum requirements: • Internet access from your local telephone company or Internet Service Provider (ISP) using a DSL modem or cable modem.
I NSTALLATIO N 2-6 Y ou should also remember to turn off the pow er, r e mov e the po wer cord from the outlet, and k eep your hands dr y when handling the Wireless Bar ricade. Basic Installation Procedure 1. Conne ct the LAN : Y ou can connect the Wireless Bar ricade to your PC , or to a hub or switch.
I NSTALLATI ON 2-7 Attach to Your Network Using Ethernet Cabling The four LA N ports on the Wireless Bar ric ade can auto-neg otiate the connection speed to 10 Mbps Ether net or 100 Mbps F ast Ether net, as well as the transmission mode to half-duplex or full-duplex.
I NSTALLATIO N 2-8 Notes: 1. Use 100-ohm shielded or unshielded twisted-pair cable with RJ-45 connectors for all connections. Use Category 3, 4 or 5 for connections that operate at 10 Mbps, and Category 5 for connections that operate at 100 Mbps. 2. Make sure eac h twisted-pair cable does not ex ceed 100 meters (328 feet).
I NSTALLATI ON 2-9 Computers equipped with a wireless adapter can communicate with eac h other as an independent wireless LAN by configuring each computer to the same radio c hannel. How ever , the Wireless Bar ricade can pro vide access to your wired/wireless LAN or to the Internet for all wireless w orkstations .
I NSTALLATIO N 2-10 Attach the Wireless Barricade to the Internet If Internet ser vices are provided through an xDSL or cable modem, use unshielded or shielded twisted-pair Ethernet cable (Categ or y 3 or greater) with RJ-45 plugs to connect the broadband modem directly to the W AN por t on the Wireless Barricade.

The default netw ork settings for the Wireless Bar ricade are: IP Address: 192.

4-1 C HAPTER 4 C ONFIGURING THE W IRELESS B ARRICADE After y ou have configured TCP/IP on a client computer , use a web browser to configure the Wireless Bar ricade. The Wireless Bar ricade can be configured by any J av a-suppor ted browser including Inter net Explorer 4.
N AVIGATING THE W EB B RO W S ER I NTERFACE 4-2 Navigating the Web Browser Interface The Wirele ss Bar ricade’ s manag ement interface features a Setup Wizard and an Advanced Setup section. Use the Setup Wizard if you w ant to quickly setup the Wireless Bar ricade for use with a cable mode m or DSL modem.
C ONFIGURING THE W IR ELESS B AR RICADE 4-3 Making Configuration Changes Configurable parameters ha ve a dialog bo x or a drop-down list. Once a configuration change has been made on a page, be sure to clic k the “ Apply” or “Next” button at the bottom of the pag e to enable the new setting .
S ETUP W IZARD 4-4 F or accurate timing of client filtering and log events , you need to set the time zone . Select your time zone from the dropdo wn list.
C ONFIGURING THE W IR ELESS B AR RICADE 4-5 Cable Modem Y our ISP ma y have giv en you a host name . If so , enter it into this field. Click “Finish” to complete the setup . T he Status page will open to allow you to view the connection status , as well as other infor mation.
S ETUP W IZARD 4-6 Fixed-IP xDSL Some xDSL Internet Ser vice Provide rs may assign a fix ed (static) IP address for y our g a tewa y . If you ha ve been provided with this infor mation, choose th is option and enter the assigned IP address , subnet mask, g atewa y IP , and DNS IP addresses for the Wireless Bar ricade.
C O N FIGURING TH E W IR EL ESS B AR RICADE 4-7 PP PoE Enter the PPPoE user name and password assigned by your Service Provider. The Service Name is normally optional, but may be required by some service providers. Leave the Maximum Transmission Unit (MTU) on the default value (1492) unless you have a particular reason to change it.
A DV AN CE D S ETUP 4-8 Advanced Setup Use the web manag ement interface to define system parameters , manag e and control the Wireless Bar ricade and its por ts , or monitor netw ork conditions . T he following table outlines the selections av ailable from this prog ram.

A DV AN CE D S ETUP 4-10 Password Settings Use this menu to restrict access based on a password. By default, there is no passw ord. F or security you should assign one before exposing the Wireless Bar ricade to the Inter net. P assw ords can contain from 3–12 alphan umeric characters and are not case sensitiv e.
C O N FIGURING THE W IR EL ESS B AR RICADE 4-11 Remote Management Allows a remote PC to configure, manage, and monitor the Wireless Barricade using a standard web browser. Check “Enable” and enter the IP address of the remote host. Click “APPLY.
A DV AN CE D S ETUP 4-12 WAN Specify the W AN connection type provided b y your Internet Ser vice Provider , then click “More Configuration” to enter detailed configuration parameters for the selected connection type. Dynamic IP The Host Name is optional, but may be required b y some ISPs .

A DV AN CE D S ETUP 4-16 DNS Domain Name Ser v ers map numerical IP addresses to the equi valent domain name (e .g ., www .smc .com). Y our ISP should provide the IP address of one or more domain name ser vers .

F or automatic 64-bi t securi ty , y ou enter a pass phrase that is use d to create four keys (as shown below). The automatic 128-bit security generates a single key b y entering a passphrase.

A DV AN CE D S ETUP 4-22 Virtual Server If yo u configure the Wireless Bar ricade as a vir tual ser ver , remote users accessing ser vices such as web or FTP at y our local site via public IP addresses can be automatically redirected to local ser v ers configured with priv ate IP addresses .
C ONFIGURING THE W IR ELESS B AR RICADE 4-23 Enabling Special Applications Some applications , such as Inter net g aming, videoconferencing, Inter net telephony and others, require m ultiple connections . These applications cannot w ork with Netw ork Address T ranslation (NA T) enabled.
A DV AN CE D S ETUP 4-24 Firewall Th e firewall does not significantly affect system perfor m ance, so we advise enabling it to protect your netw ork users .

Whe n the SPI feature is tur ned on, all the incoming packets will be block ed unless cer tain types of traffic types are check ed by the users .
