7 Important Safety Precautions Read these guidelines before using y our wireless phone. F ailure to comply with them may be dangerous or illegal. Road Safety at All Times Do not use a hand-held phone while driving; park the vehicle first.

Your Phone 12 Makes or answers a call. In Idle Mode, accesses the call log list. In Menu Mode, selects a menu function or stores information that you ha ve entered, such as a name in the phone or SIM memory . Deletes characters from the displa y . When pressed and held in Idle Mode, quickly accesses the New memo screen.
Your Phone 14 Displays Main Display Layout The display has three areas: Area Description First line Displays v arious icons. See page 15. Middle lines Display messages, instructions and any information that you enter , such as number to be dialled. Last line Shows the functions currently assigned to the two soft keys.
Your Phone 16 Main Display Off Mode If you don’t press any key in a minute after dimming of the main display , the main display goes into the Off Mode to save the power . Press an y key to awake the main displa y from the Off Mode. Appears when you are connected to the GPRS network.
Your Phone 18 Backlight The main display and the keypad are illuminated b y a backlight. When you press an y key or open the folder , the backlight illuminates. It turns off if no key is pressed within a given period of time, depending on the Backlight menu option.
Getting Started 20 Removing the SIM Card To remove the SIM card, slide the card out of the holder , as shown. Installing/Removing/Charging the Battery Y our phone is powered by a rechargeable Li-ion battery . Use only approved batteries and chargers. Ask your local Samsung dealer for further details.
Getting Started 22 Charging the Battery by Using the Travel Adapter Note : The phone can be used while the battery is being charged, but this causes the battery to charge more slowly . 1. Plug the connector of the tra vel adapter into the jack at the bottom of the phone.

Call Functions 30 Ending a Call When you want to finish y our call, briefly press the key or close the folder . Answering a Call When somebody calls you, the phone rings and displays the incoming call animation. If the caller can be identified, the caller’ s phone number , or name if stored in your Phonebook, displays.
Call Functions 32 Switching the Microphone Off (Mute) Y ou can tempor arily switch your phone’ s microphone off so that the other person cannot hear you. Example : Y ou may wish to sa y something to another person in the room but do not want the calling person to hear y ou.
Call Functions 34 Answering a Second Call Y ou can answer an incoming call while y ou have a call in progress, if this service is supported by the network and you hav e activated the Call waiting option (see page 136). Y ou will be notified of an incoming call by a call waiting tone.

40 Entering Text The phone allows you to enter char acters for messages and names in Chinese and English. T o enter Chinese text, the phone provides sev eral widely used pronunciation based (Pinyin) and character shape based (Strok e) input methods to meet the preferences of different users, allowing for greater convenience and ease of use.
Entering Text 42 Using the Pinyin Mode Pinyin is a system to mark Chinese pronunciation in Latin alphabets. With the pinyin input method, y ou can enter Chinese characters b y entering the pinyin string from the phone keypad and the phone automatically presents the matching alternatives.
Entering Text 44 Inserting a Space Insert a space between the char acters, press the key in the T ext Area. Clearing Strokes and Characters Press the C k ey or more times to remove strok es to the left. Once the Pinyin Area is empt y , pressing the C key remov es characters from the T ext Area.

60 Phonebook Menu Phonebook offers the following features: • Phonebook : allows you to find, create or set up the speed-dialling feature and manage Phonebook entries. • Management : allows you to create or remo ve y our own number , set up caller groups and check the memory status.
Phonebook Menu 62 Changing the SIM Memory Entries To change the SIM memory entry’s information, press the Options soft key . The following options are av ailable: Edit number This option allows you to change the number . Y ou can also add a new number if none has been stored for the selected category .

Messages 74 Note : T o clear the new message notification on the display , press the key . Managing memory Inbox and Outbox share a giv en amount of memory in your phone or SIM card. When the message memory is full, the New message icon ( ) blinks and an error message displays.

Messages 88 Outbox (Menu 1.2.3) Outbox stores messages that y ou sent, you failed to send and you cancelled sending. When the Outbox menu option is selected, the list of messages you hav e sent or saved displays with the: •m essage’ s subject or No subject if the message had no subject.
Messages 90 Cut media : extracts the picture or sound, so that y ou can set them as a wallpaper or ringtone or y ou can send them as a multimedia message. Cut address : extracts phone numbers, email addresses or URL addresses in the text, so that y ou can call the number or send a message to the number or save it in y our Phonebook.
Messages 92 Preset Messages (Menu 1.4) Using this menu, you can preset up to nine messages that you use most frequently . When you access this menu, the preset message list displays. 1. Scroll to a message or an empty entry by pressing the Up or Down key .
Messages 94 Settings (Menu 1.6) Short Message (Menu 1.6.1) Using this menu, you can set up default SMS information. The following options are av ailable: Service centre : allows you to store or change the number of your SMS centre required when sending messages.
Messages 96 Report allowed: when this option sets to Off , your phone does not send a reply to the recipient’ s phone even if the sender asks for the read reply . MMS profiles : in this menu, you can configure MMS profile settings that are required when you send or receive multimedia messages.

Call Records 100 Call Time (Menu 2.5) This option lets you view the timers for calls made and received. Notes : • If your SIM card supports the ALS (Alternate Line Service) feature, you must first select the appropriate line.
102 Sound Settings Y ou can use the Sound settings feature to customise various settings, such as the: • ringtone, volume and type for incoming calls or messages. • sounds made when your call is connected or when you press a key . • quiet mode which your phone switches to when you hold down the key .
Sound Settings 104 Repetition : allows you to specify how often the phone informs you of a new message. Y ou can choose either Once or Periodic . Power On/Off (Menu 3.3) This option allows you to select the melody that the phone sounds when you switch it on or off .
Sound Settings 106 Quiet Mode (Menu 3.7) When you hold the key down in Idle Mode, the phone switches to the Quiet Mode. Y ou can specify whether the phone vibrates or mutes about all sounds in the Quiet Mode. The following options are av ailable: Vibration : the phone vibrates r ather than rings in the Quiet Mode.
Phone Settings 108 Display (Menu 4.2) Y ou can change the background image and the colour of the components on the display according to your preference and needs. Wallpaper (Menu 4.2.1) This option allows you to change the background image to be displayed in Idle Mode.
Phone Settings 110 No sliding: The front LCD doesn’t slide. Note : If you select the Right to left or Left to right option, the Speed screen appears. Y ou can set the sliding speed by pressing the Select soft k ey in the Speed screen. Light time : allows you to set how long turn on the light.
Phone Settings 112 Phone Lock (Menu 4.4.3) When the Phone lock feature is enabled, the phone is locked and you must enter the 8-digit phone password each time the phone is switched on. The password is preset to “00000000” at the factory . T o change the phone password, see the Change password menu option on the page 112.
Phone Settings 114 Change PIN2 (Menu 4.4.8) The Change PIN2 feature allows you to change y our current PIN2 to a new one. Y ou must enter the current PIN2 before you can specify a new one. Once you hav e entered a new PIN2, you are asked to confirm it by entering it again.
Phone Settings 116 Active Folder (Menu 4.9) This menu allows you to answer a call simply b y opening the folder . The following options are av ailable: Off : When this option is selectied, you can answer a call by pressing the key . On : When this option is selectied, you can answer a call by opening the folder .
117 Organiser The Organiser feature enables you to: • view the calendar and/or write a memo or to do list. • set the current date and time, and find out what time it is in various cities around the world. • set the alarm so that the phone rings at a specific time.
Organiser 118 • Anniversary : anniversaries to be remembered, such as wedding anniversaries, birthdays or other special days. Note : Y ou can sav e up to 25 items to each category , so you can save 100 memos totally . 3. Scroll to a date on the calendar by pressing the navigation keys.
Organiser 120 The following options are av ailable when you press the Options soft key on the Calendar displa y: Add memo : allows you to add a new memo on the day . Go to date : allows you to enter a particular date and then schedule an event on that date.
Organiser 122 To Do List (Menu 5.3) This menu allows you to view a list of tasks. To create a new memo of the T o do list type: 1. Write the memo about y our task and press the Ok soft key . For more information about how to enter characters, see page 40.
Organiser 124 To select your time zone: 1. Select the city corresponding to your time z one by pressing the Left or Right key one or more times. The local date and time display . 2. Press the Set soft key . 4. When you hav e finished, press the soft key or the key to exit.
Organiser 126 Once an alarm has been set, you can see the Alarm icon ( ) on the top line of the display . T o stop the alarm when it rings, open and close the phone or press any key . Note : When the Quiet Mode is activ ated, the alarm tone doesn’t sound.
Organiser 128 Conversion (Menu 5.7) This menu option allows you to con vert from one type of unit to another . To convert a value: 1. Scroll to the type of conv ersion to be performed from Length , Weight , Volume , Area and Temperature , and press the Select soft k ey .
Organiser 130 To stop the timer melody when it rings, open and close the phone or press any k ey . To stop the timer before the end, press the Stop soft key on the Timer screen. Notes : • The timer uses power from the battery consequently , the phone’ s operating time is reduced.

Fun Box 140 Home (Menu 7.1.1) When you select this menu option, the phone connects to the network and loads the homepage of the Wireless W eb service provider . Once connected, the homepage displays. The content depends on the service provider . Note : T o quickly launch the W AP browser from Idle Mode, press the key .
Fun Box 142 Using the WAP Browser Options Several options are a vailable when you are surfing the Wireless W eb. T o access these options, press the key once connected to the Wireless W eb. Goto URL : allows you to manually enter the URL address of the site that you wish to access.
Fun Box 144 Note: Y ou do not need to change the browser settings in most cases. Change the settings only when y our network provider asks y ou to. For each pro xy , the following options are available: Proxy name : enter the name of the HT TP proxy server .
Fun Box 146 Media box (Menu 7.2) This menu option stores v arious media items from other sources, such as the wireless web or multimedia messages. Photos (Menu 7.2.1) This option allows you to view the tak en pictures. My photos : allow you to view the photos in m y photos.
Fun Box 148 Delete All (Menu 7.2.4) This option deletes all of the photos, images and sounds in the Media box. Photos (Menu 7.2.4.1) 1. Scroll to a box and place a check mark ahead it by pressing the Select soft key . Selecting All places check marks on all of the boxes.
Fun Box 150 JAVA World (Menu 7.3) Y ou can download MIDlets (Ja va applications running on mobile phones) from v arious sources using the WAP Browser and store them in y our phone. Downloads : A list of Jav a games is displayed. In basic, two pre-loaded MIDlets (Jav a games) are provided.

162 Using ALS (Alternate Line Service) The ALS feature enables two lines to be associated with one SIM card. Consequently , you can make and receive calls on either line. If y ou subscribe to this network service, a few additional menu options enable you to set up this feature.
