5 IN STALLATI ON SELECTI NG A LOCATION You can set t he TAD-1018 on a flat surface (such as a desk top o r counter top), or mount it on a wall plate or di- re ctl y on the w al l. Select a location that is: • Near an AC outlet • Near a modul ar phone line jack If the phone l ine jack i s not a modul ar jack, you must updat e the wir i ng.
6 Notes: • Y ou can turn t he tape over and record o n the ot her side. T his lets you save any messag es recorded on the first si de while using the tape to record more messages. • Replace the tape at least once a year , or more often if it is used fre- quently .
7 Follow these st eps to record your out - going m essage. 1. Rotate VOLUME on t he base to th e right until it cl icks. The MES- SAG E ind ic a to r li gh ts. 2. Lift open t he cas sette com part- ment door . 3. Hold down OGM REC/ P LA Y until th e MESSAGE i ndica tor t urns o f f, then release the b utton.
8 PLACING THE PHONE ON A DESK T O P To use your a nswering system o n a desk, table , or shelf, plug the tele- phone co rd into a modu lar phone jack . Plug o ne end of the coiled h andset cord into the ha ndset jack on the a n- swering syst em and the ot her end i nto the jack on the handset.
9 3. Thread a screw into ea ch hole until it’ s head extends ab out 1 / 8 inc h from th e wall. 4. I f you ar e mounting the syst em on a wall plate, threa d the telephone cord into the left slot o n the t op of the mounti ng bracket and pull it through the large hol e in t h e cen- ter of the bracket.
10 9. Plug one end of the coi led hand - se t co rd i nto th e handset jack on the answering system a nd the other end into the jack on the hand - set. Place the handset in the cr a dl e. T URNING O FF/ON THE RINGER To turn off the telephone’s ringer, set RINGER to OFF .
11 Note: If your phone system re- quires that yo u dial an access code ( 9 , fo r ex amp le) be f or e yo u dial an outs ide num ber , do not press the access code either . If the dial tone s tops, you have touch-tone service. Leav e TON E / PULSE set to TO NE .
12 T ELE PHONE O PERATION You can m ake and answer calls w ith this telephone as you wou ld with any other pho ne. Read this section to learn about special features. USING PAUSE In some teleph one systems , you m ust dial an acces s code ( 9 , f or example) and wait for a second dial tone b efore you can dial a n ou tside number.
13 Note: If you do not have any special telephone s ervices, pressing FLAS H might di sconnect y our current call. SETTI NG THE PHONE’ S VO L U M E Slide VOL (volume) on the hands et to set the handset’s volum e to the d e- sired l evel.
14 ANSWE RIN G SY ST EM OP ERAT I ON SETTI NG THE ANSWERING SYSTEM TO ANSWER CALL S Rotate VOLUME on th e b ase to the right. When the MESSAG E indicator stays on without the answe ring sys- tem sound ing a tone, the syst em is ready to answer calls.
15 SCREENING CALLS To scr e en calls, let th e answeri ng sys- tem answ er them, then l isten to the caller’s message through the answer- ing system ’s spea ker. If you decide to answer the call, pick up any phone on the sam e pho ne line as the ans wering system (in cluding t he syst em’s phone).
16 To sa ve the me ssages, press SA VE before a new c all is rec orded. The tape fast-forwards to the en d of a ll the messages and reset s to a nswer calls .
17 REMOTE CONTROL OP ERATI ON While you are away from your h ome or office, you can use a touch-tone phone or a pu lse phone wit h a poc ket ton e d ia ler to : • Play your messa ges • Er a se you.
18 REMOTE ANSW ER-ON You can use any remote phone to set the answering sy stem to answer calls if: • The answering syst em has power , • The c assette is loaded, and • The answering syst em is off . To set the answerin g system to an- swer calls, dial you r phone n umber and wait about 60 second s until t he answeri ng system a nswers.
19 T ROUBLES HOOTING We do not expect you t o have any pro b lems with you r answeri ng system , b ut if you do, be sure you installed the tape correc tly. 22 CLEANING THE T APE- HANDLING PARTS Dirt, dust, or particles of the tape's coating can accumul ate on the tape heads a nd other parts th at the tape touches. This can greatly reduce the performance of the cas sette player. We recomm end you i nspect and clean the tape head about every 3 months .
