6 IN ST ALLA TION CHOOS ING A LOCA TIO N Select a l oc ation t hat is ne ar a m odu lar telephon e jack and an AC outlet. Your TAD con nects directly t o a m odu- lar te lephon e line jack. If your t e le- phone wiring does not have a modular jack, you can u pdate the wiring yourself or have the t ele phone com pan y updat e it for you.
7 Follow these step s to inst all t he battery. 1. Use a flat-bladed screwdriver to push the latch on the battery com - partm ent cover, th en lift the cover. 2. Snap t he battery’s terminals to t he conn ector inside the compa rtment . 3. Replace t he cover and pres s down on the latch to close it s e curely .
8 Note: Be sure the key hole slots on the bracket and t he T AD are pointed in the same direction. 4. Align the wall plate’s t wo studs with the keyhole sl ots on the bottom of t he T AD . Sli de t he T AD dow n on to th e studs to secure the T AD to th e wall plate.
9 5. Plug one end of the supplied long modul ar cord into the TEL LINE jack on top of the phone’s base. 6. Plug the cord’s other end i nto a modul ar phone line jack. 7. Slide t he h andset clip up and out of its retaining s lot in the b ase. Rotate the clip so the tab point s up, then slide t he clip ba ck int o its slot.
10 PREP ARA TION SETTI NG T HE PULSE/ T O NE SWITCH Set PULSE/ TONE for t he t ype of serv ice you have. I f you are no t sure which t ype you h ave, follow these st eps. 1. Set PULSE/T O NE on the back of t he TA D t o TON E . 2. Lift the hands et and listen f or a dia l ton e .
11 Note: Each time you change the day , the number on th e display chan ges to indicate th e day of the week ( 1 - 7 ). 3. Press a nd rel eas e PLA Y/STOP . The T AD beeps onc e and announ ces the t ime for mat, “AM” o r “PM. ” 4. Press REPEA T/CODE to s et b ack the hour or SKIP/MEMO t o advance the hour to the desired hour .

SETTI NG THE RINGER’S VOLUM E To adjust t he ringer’s volum e, set HI/ LOW/OFF to HI in a noisy room (such as a kitchen), or LOW in a quiet room (such as a bedro om).
13 USIN G PRIV ACY If you w ant to speak with som eone in the room without the person on the phone hearin g your conversat ion, press and hold PRIV ACY . Releas e PRIV ACY to resume your phone co nversation. USING TONE SER VICES ON A PULSE LINE Som e special s ervices, such as ba nk- by-pho ne, require t o ne signals.

15 Storing/Cha in-Dialing Spec ial Servi ce Numbe r s W hen you s tore the ph one num bers fo r specia l s ervices (such as alternate long-distanc e or ba nk-by-ph one), we recomm end you store the service’ s phone nu mber in one m emory location and s tore additional inf ormation in an - other memory location.
16 ANSWE RIN G SY ST EM OP ERA TI ON RECORDING T HE OUTGOING MESSAGE Before you can set the TAD to answer calls, you must rec ord th e outgoi ng messag e (OGM). This is what the caller hears when the TAD answers a call. Notes : • The maxi mum outgoi ng mes sage length is 30 s econd s.
17 • If no outgoing m essage i s recorded, the T A D says, “Answer off, no announceme nt.” To set the TAD to not answer calls, press ANSWER again. Th e TAD says “Answer off,” and the indicator turns off. RECORDING INCO MING MESSAGES The maxi mum length for each incoming mess age is 60 seconds.
18 Before playing each me ssag e, the TAD announc es the message nu mbe r and the day and time when each m essage was recorded. After all message s play, the TAD says, “E n d of message(s)” and saves al l the messag es. Rep eating Message s To review a message while you are lis- tening to i t, pre ss REPEA T/CODE .
19 Stop ping M essage Play back To stop playing mess ages, press PLA Y/ STOP twice within 2 seconds. The TAD beeps on ce and stops pl ayback . ERASING M ESSAGES To delete a s pecific messag e, press DE- LETE once while the m essage is pl ay- ing. The TAD beeps once and immedia tely erases the current m es- sage , then pl ays t he next m essage.
20 REMOTE OPE R A TION You can operate t he TAD from almost any touch-tone phone, or from a rotary phone using a poc ket tone-dialer (avail- able at your local Rad io Sha ck store). The TAD’s remote operat ion security code is preset to 744. You can operate your TAD remotely with t his code; how- ever, we recom mend t hat you set your own code.
