3 Installi ng Phone Filters A phone f ilter is re commend ed to minim ize bac kgroun d noise d uring a phone con ver sation on telepho nes not c onnected dire ctly to t he Hotwire ADSL/R Bridge/Ro uter . If a dditional telephon es in yo ur home or busi ness sh are the sa me phone line with th e router , install one phone fil ter on each telepho ne.
4 Installi ng the Ho tw ire ADSL/R Bridge/ Route r Place th e router on a flat surf ace wi th clear ance f or the rear connecto rs. Proce dure 1. UNPLUG TELEPHONE. If a teleph one is conn ected at the RJ 11 wall jack where the rou ter will be installed , unplug the teleph one cab le from the wal l jack .
5 4. INST ALL WHIT E FERRITE CLAMP . If you plugged in a phon e, ins tall the s upplied white ferrite c lamp around both the L INE and PHONE ca bles . If you did not plug in a phone , instal l the wh ite clamp ar ound the LI N E c a bl e. Hold t he open c lamp around the cab le or cables as cl ose t o the r ou ter as poss ible.
6 7. CONNECT T O PO WER. Insert the supplied po wer cord’ s round en d into the jack l abeled PO WER. Plug the tra nsf or mer int o an A C outlet. When th e pow er co rd is inst alled, th e router g oes throu gh a po wer-on self-test. LED Status on page 7 sho ws how the LE Ds should ap pear after a succes sful test .
7 LED Stat us The Ho twire ADSL/R Bridge/R outer’ s fro nt panel inc ludes LEDs (light-emitti ng diodes) that pr ovide s tatus on t he router an d its inte rfa ces. In T able 1, F ront P anel LEDs , the Condi tion in BOLD sh ows ho w the LED should ap pear after a succes sful po wer-on self-test.
8 Configuring the Hotw ire ADSL/R B ridg e/Rout er ST OP . Do not pr oceed with th is section u nless yo u were so i nstructed b y your Internet Service Pro vider (ISP), or y ou are familiar with IP a nd routin g protoco ls.
9 6. Clic k on Netw ork. The Netw ork screen appears. 7. Enter and s elect the p aramete rs according to the instructio ns provid ed by your IS P . Clic k on Sa v e. 8. When y ou ha v e made all changes recommend ed by yo ur ISP , click o n the Logo ut link to end the ses sion.

11 DSL VPI and VCI: T hese need to be fill ed in f or the router to be able to comm unicate wi th yo ur Central O ffice (CO) via DSL. VPI (Vir tual P ath Ide ntifier) and VCI (Vir tual Circuit Identifi er) identify the route tha t the A TM c ells tak e to reach th e CO .
