8 Introduction —Continued Supported Discs The D V-SP405 supports the follo wing discs. • Some audio CDs feature copy protection that doesn’ t conform to the of ficial CD standard. Since these are nonstandard discs, they ma y not play pr operly in the D V-SP405.
9 Intr oduction —Continued About DualDisc pla yback A DualDisc is a new two -sided disc, one side of which con- tains D VD content video, audio, etc. while the ot her side contains non-DVD content such as digital au dio material. The non-D VD, audio side of the disc is not compliant with the CD Audio specification and theref ore may not play .
10 Introduction —Continued About DivX DivX is a compressed digital video format created b y the DivX ® vid eo codec from DivX, I nc. This player can play DivX video files burned on CD-R/R W/ROM discs. K eeping the same te rminolo gy as D VD-V ideo, indi vid- ual Di vX video f iles are ca lled “T itles”.
11 Intr oduction —Continued PC-created disc compatibility Discs recorded using a pers onal computer may not be playable in this unit due to the setting of the application software used to creat e th e disc. In these particular instances, check with the software publisher for more detailed information .
12 Bef ore Using the D V-SP405 Notes: • If the remote control ler doesn’ t work reliably , try replacing both batteries. • Don’t mix ne w and old batterie s, or dif ferent types of batteries. • If you intend not to use the remote controller for a long time, remove the batteries t o pre vent possible leakage and corrosion.

18 Connecting the D V-SP405 • Read the manuals supplied with your A V components. • Don’t connect the po wer cord until you’ ve completed all audio and video connections. Optical Digital Output (Oceanian model only) The optical digital connector is f itted with protecti ve cap.
19 Connecting the D V-SP405 —Continued The setup described here is a basic setup that allows you to play discs usi ng just the supplied A V cable (RCA). In this setup, stereo audio is played throu gh the speakers in your TV . Important: • This player is equipped wi th copy protection technol- ogy .
20 Connecting the D V-SP405 —Continued Switching the video output to interlace using the f ro nt panel contr ols Switch the player to standby then, using the front panel controls, press ST ANDBY/ ON while pressing to switch the player back to “Interlace”.
21 Connecting the D V-SP405 —Continued • Connect the D VD Player to the TV directly . If you connect the D VD Player to a VCR, TV/VCR combi- nation, or video selector , the playback picture may be distorted as D VD videos are cop y protected.
22 Connecting the D V-SP405 —Continued Using HDMI If you hav e a HDMI equipped monitor or display , you can connect it to this play er using a commercially av ail- able HDMI cable.
23 Connecting the D V-SP405 —Continued Although you can reproduce the D VD Player’ s sound from the TV speakers with the connections on page 19, connecting with an amplifie r pro vides you high quality dynamic sounds.

25 Getting Star ted For ease of use, this player makes e xtensiv e use of graph- ical on-screen displays (OSDs). All the screens are na vigated in basically the same w ay , u s i n g t h e /// ( c u r s o r ) b u t t o n s t o c h a n g e t h e highlighted item and pres sing ENTER to se lect it.
26 Getting Star ted —Continued This sets the language of this system’ s on-screen dis- plays. Setting the language of this pla y er’ s on-screen displa ys 1 Press HOME MENU and select “Initial Settings”. 2 Select “OSD Language” fr om the “Display” settings.
27 Getting Started —Continued The basic playback contro ls for playing D VD, CD, V ideo CD, DivX V ideo/ WMV and MP3/WMA/MPEG- 4 AA C discs are co vered he re. 28 Getting Star ted —Continued The table belo w sho ws the basic controls on the remote for playing discs. The following ch apter cov ers other playback features in more detail. When you stop playback of a disc, RESUME is show n in the display indicating that you can resume playback again from that point.
29 Getting Started —Continued Many D VD-V ideo discs feature menus from which you can select what you want to watch. They may also gi ve access to additional fe atures, such as subtitle and audio language selection, or spec ial features su ch as slide- shows.
30 Getting Star ted —Continued Hint: • After I load a D VD disc, it ejects automatically afte r a fe w seconds! → Most likely , the disc is the wrong region for your player . The region number should be printed on the disc; check it against the re gion number of the player (which you can find on the rear panel).
31 Pla ying discs Notes: • Many of the functions cove red in this chapter apply to D VD discs, V ideo CDs, CD s, Di vX V ideo/WMV and MP3/WMA/MPEG-4 AA C/JP EG discs, although the exact operation of some v aries slightly with the kind of disc loaded.
32 Play ing discs —Continued Y ou can advance or back up D VD discs frame-by-frame. W ith V ideo CD you can only use frame advance. Note: • Backward frame-by-f rame pl ayback does not work with V ideo CD. After loading a CD/CD-R/R W containing JPEG picture files, press (play) to start a slidesho w from the first folder/picture on the disc.
33 Playing discs —Contin ued Use the “Disc Navigator” to bro wse through the contents of a D VD or V ideo CD disc to f i nd the part you want to play . Important: • Y ou can’t use the “Disc Naviga tor” with V ideo CD in PBC mode. Tip : • Another way to f ind a particul ar place on a disc is to use one of the search mode s.
34 Play ing discs —Continued Use the “Disc Na vigator” to f ind a particular f ile or folder by filename. Note that if there are other types of files on the same disc, these will not be displayed in the “Disc Navigator”.
35 Playing discs —Contin ued The “A-B Repeat” function allo ws you to specify two points (A and B) within a tr ack (CD, V i deo CD) or title (D VD) that form a lo op which is played o ver and ov er . • Y ou can’t use “A-B Repeat ” with V ideo CD in PBC mode, or MP3/WMA/MPEG-4 AA C/DivX V ideo/ WMV files.
36 Play ing discs —Continued Use the random play function to play titles or chapters (D VD-V ideo) or tracks (CD, V ideo CD) at random. (Note that the same track/tit le/chapter may play more than once.) Y ou can set the random play option when a disc is play- ing or stopped.
37 Playing discs —Contin ued This feature lets you program the play order of titles/ chapters/tracks on a disc. Important: • Y ou can’t use Program play with VR format D VD-R/ -R W discs, V ideo CD playing in PBC mode, MP3/ WMA/MPEG-4 AA C discs, Di vX V ideo/WMV discs, or while a D VD disc menu is being displayed.
38 Play ing discs —Continued There are a number of other options in the “Program” menu in addition to “Create/Edit”. • Playback Start – Starts playback of a sav ed program list • Playb.
39 Playing discs —Contin ued Some D VD or Di vX V ideo disc s hav e subtitles in one or more languages; the disc box will usually te ll you which subtitle languages are a vaila ble. Y ou can sw itch subtitle language during playback. • See “Displaying Di vX subt itle files” on page 10 for more on DivX su btitle.
40 Play ing discs —Continued Using the zoom feature you ca n magnify a part of the screen by a factor of 2 or 4, while wa tching a D VD, DivX V ideo/WMV title or V ideo CD , or playing a JPEG disc. Some D VD discs feature scen es shot from tw o or more angles—check the disc box for details.
41 USB pla ybac k (Not Nor th Am erican model) Note: Onkyo cannot guarantee compat ibility (operation and/or bus po wer) with all USB mass storage devices and assumes no responsibility for any loss of data th at may occur when connected to this unit.
42 A udio Settings and Video Adjust menus The “Audio Settings” menu of fers features for adjusting the way discs sound. Equalizer • Settings: “Of f (d efault)” , “Rock”, “Pop”, “Li ve”, “Dance”, “T echno” , “Classic”, “Soft” The v arious preset EQ curv es are designed to suit vari- ous styles of music.
43 A udio Settings and Video Adjust menus —Continued From the “V ideo Adjust” screen you can adjust v arious settings that affect how the picture is presented. Note: • Depending on your TV , the picture may appear dis- torted if the brightness is set too high.
44 Initial Settings menu The “Initial Settings” menu provides audio and video output settings, pare ntal lock settings , and display set- tings, among others. If an option is grayed out it means that it cannot be changed at the current time. This is usua lly because a disc is playing.
45 Initial Settings menu —Contin ued Digital A udio Out settings Setting Option What it means Digital Out On Digital audio is output from the digital outputs. Off No digital audio output. Dolby Digital Out Dolby Digital Dolby Digital encoded digital audio is output when playing a Dolb y Digit al D VD disc.

50 Initial Settings menu —Continued • Defaul t setting: “STEREO” If you’ ve selected “DTS > PCM” in “DTS Out” on page 45, you can choose the way the signal is down- mixed to PCM audio.

When you load a disc containing this type of Div X V OD content, the remaining number of plays is shown on-screen and you then ha ve the option of playing the disc (thereby using up one of the remaining plays), or stopping.
52 Additional inf ormation D VD-V ideo discs come in sev eral dif ferent screen aspect ratios, ranging from TV p rogr ams, which are genera lly 4:3, to CinemaScope widescreen movies, with an aspect ratio of up to about 7:3. T elevisions, too, come in di f ferent aspect ratios; “st an- dard” 4:3 and widescreen 16:9.

55 Glossary Analog audio An electrical signal that di rectly represents sound. Com- pare this to digital audio wh ich can be an electric al sig- nal, but is an indirect repr esentation of sound. See also “Digital audio”. Aspect ratio The width of a TV screen relati ve to its height.
56 Glossary —Continued Progressive scan video All the lines that make up a video picture are updated in one pass (compared to inte rlace which takes two passes to update the whole picture). Regions (DVD-Video only) These associat e discs and players with part icular areas of the world.

58 T roubleshooting —Continued Symptoms Causes Remedies DV D P l aye r Brightness is unstable or the picture is noisy? The D V-SP405 is connected to your TV via a VCR or other video equipment and a copy-protection system is affecting the picture. Connect the DV-SP405 directly to your TV (page 19).
59 T roubl eshooting —Continued Symptoms Causes Remedies DV D P l aye r Some MP3 f iles don’ t play? MP3 files without a “.m p3” or “.MP3” filename e xtension are not recognized. Use the correct filename extension (page 9). The MP3 disc is a multisession disc.
60 T roubleshooting —Continued HDMI tr oubleshooting Incorrect operation is often mistak en fo r trouble or malfunction. If you think that there is something wron g with this component, check the points belo w . Some times the trouble may lie in another component.
