3 Precautions 1. Recording Copyright —Unless it’ s for personal use only , recording copyrighted material is illegal with- out the permission of the copyright holder . 2. A C Fuse —The A C fuse inside the unit is not user - serviceable. If you cannot turn on the unit, contact your Onkyo dealer .

A ST ANDBY/ON button (27, 53) This button is used to set the CD recei ver to On or Standby . B SLEEP button (55) Used to set the Sleep timer , which turns off the CD receiv er after a specified time.
14 Disc Notes Supported Discs The CD receiv er supports the following discs. • Some audio CDs use copy protection that doesn’ t con- form to the official CD standard. Since these are non- standard discs, they may not play properly in the CD receiv er.
15 Disc Notes —Continued • The following ID3 tags are supported: v ersions 1.0/1.1 and 2.2/2.3/2.4. V ersions 2.5 and later are not supported. Normally , version 2.2/2.3/2.4 tags hav e priority and will be displayed regardless of the ID3 VER 1 preference on page 37.
16 Connecting Antennas This section explains ho w to connect the supplied indoor FM antenna, AM loop antenna, and D AB antenna, and how to connect commercially a v ailable outdoor FM and AM antennas. The CD receiv er won’ t pick up any radio signals without an antenna connected, so you must connect the antenna to use the tuner .
17 Connecting Antennas —Continued Connecting the D AB Antenna Connecting an Outdoor FM Antenna If you cannot achiev e good reception with the supplied indoor FM antenna, try a commercially av ailable out- door FM antenna instead.
18 Connecting Speaker s Connecting Y our Speakers • Connect the right speaker to the CD recei ver’ s right (R) SPEAKERS terminals. Connect the left speaker to the left (L) SPEAKERS terminals. • Connect the positiv e (+) terminal on each speaker to the corresponding positi ve (+) terminal on the CD recei ver.
19 Connecting Other Components • Before making any connections, read the manuals supplied with your other components. • Don’t connect the po wer cord until you’ v e completed and double-checked all connections. Connection Color Coding RCA-type audio connections are usually color-coded: red and white.

Connect the CD receiv er’ s MD/T APE OUT jacks to the cassette deck’ s INPUT (REC) jacks, and connect the CD receiv er’ s MD/T APE IN jacks to the cassette deck’ s OUTPUT (PLA Y) jacks.

Connect the CD receiv er’ s MD/T APE OUT jacks to the MD recorder’ s INPUT (REC) jacks, and connect the CD receiv er’ s MD/T APE IN jacks to the MD recorder’ s OUTPUT (PLA Y) jacks.
22 Connecting Other Components —Continued The following diagram sho ws ho w to connect an optional Onkyo RI Dock (Remote Interacti ve Dock). Connect the CD receiv er’ s DOCK/CDR IN jacks (DOCK IN jacks on the CR-315D AB) to the RI Dock’ s A UDIO OUT jacks.

Connect the CD receiv er’ s DOCK/CDR OUT jacks to the CD recorder’ s INPUT (REC) jacks, and connect the CD receiv er’ s DOCK/CDR IN jacks to the CD recorder’ s OUTPUT (PLA Y) jacks.
24 Connecting Other Components —Continued The following diagram sho ws ho w to connect a component with an optical digital audio output, such as a CD recorder , MD recorder , games console, satellite tuner , or personal computer . Connect the CD receiv er’ s OPTICAL DIGIT AL IN jack to an optical digital audio output on the other component.
25 Connecting Other Components —Continued Connect the CD receiv er’ s LINE 1 IN jacks (use the DOCK IN jacks on the CR-315D AB) to the TV’ s audio output jacks. Hint: To listen to the TV , select the LINE 1 input source (select DOCK on the CR-315D AB).
26 Fir st Time Setup (Eur opean Model Onl y) To use the AccuClock function, the CD receiv er must be able to receiv e RDS radio stations, which means an FM antenna must be connected. Be sure to connect an FM antenna before attempting to use this function (see page 16).
27 Basic Operation To turn on the CD receiv er, press the [ST ANDBY/ON] button on the CD recei ver or remote controller . The ST ANDBY indicator goes off. Press the [ST ANDBY/ON] button again to set the CD receiv er to Standby . The ST ANDBY indicator lights up.
28 Basic Operation —Continued On the CR-515D AB, you can also use the [TONE] b ut- ton and multi control on the front panel to adjust the bass and treble. To turn on the Super Bass function, press the [S.B ASS] button. The S.B ASS indicator lights up.
29 Basic Operation —Continued Y ou can choose what name is displayed when an input source is selected so that it matches the type of component that you’ ve connected to the MD/T APE IN, DOCK/CDR IN, or DIGIT AL IN.
30 Pla ying CDs Selecting T rac ks (CR-515D AB) To return to the beginning of the track currently playing, tur n the multi control a little to the left. Tu rn the multi control further to select earlier tracks. • While playback is stopped, turn the multi control to the left to select the previous track.
31 Playing CDs —Continued During playback or while playback is paused, press the remote controller’ s [DISPLA Y] button repeatedly to display the following CD information. On the CR-315D AB, you can also use the CD receiv er’ s [DISPLA Y] button to display this information.
32 Playing CDs —Continued On an MP3 CD, MP3 files may be organized in a hierar - chically , with folders containing files and subfolders, as shown belo w . On the CD receiv er, there are two modes for selecting MP3 files: Navigation mode and All F older mode .
33 Playing CDs —Continued Selecting MP3 Files in All Folder Mode W ith All F older mode, you don’t ha ve to navig ate the folder hierarchy because all folders that contain MP3 files appear at the same lev el. If random playback is currently selected, press the [YES/MODE] button to cancel it before proceeding.
34 Playing CDs —Continued Playing the MP3 Files in Onl y One Folder Normally , all of the MP3 files in all of the folders on the disc are played. W ith 1-folder playback, only the MP3 files in the specified folder are played.
35 Playing CDs —Continued W ith memory playback, you can create a playlist of up to 25 tracks. Memory playback can be set only when the input source is set to CD and playback is stopped.
36 Playing CDs —Continued W ith random playback, all of the tracks on the disc are played in random order . Random playback can be set only when the input source is set to CD and playback is stopped. Cancelling Random Playbac k •T o cancel random playback, press the [SHUFFLE] b utton repeatedly until the RANDOM indicator disap- pears.
37 Playing CDs —Continued To cancel the procedure at any point, press the [MENU/NO] button. Preferences Below , the name of each preference is follo wed by its options in parentheses, with the default option in bold.
38 Listening to the Radio When tuned into a station, the T uned indicator appears. When tuned into a stereo FM station, the FM ST indicator appears as well. T uning into weak stereo FM stations If the signal from a stereo FM station is weak, it may be impossible to get good reception.
39 Listening to the Radio —Continued Press the remote controller’ s [DISPLA Y] button repeatedly to display more radio information. On the CR-315D AB, you can also use the CD receiv er’ s [DISPLA Y] button to display this information. RDS is only av ailable on European models and only in areas where RDS broadcasts are av ailable.
40 Listening to the Radio —Continued Selecting D AB for the V ery First Time The very first time you select D AB, the Auto T uning function automatically scans the D AB Band III and L-Band for the multiplex es (i.e., stations) av ailable in your area.
41 Listening to the Radio —Continued Selecting D AB Stations • On the CR-515D AB, you can also use the multi con- trol to select D AB stations. • On the CR-315D AB, you can also use the Previous and Next [ ] or [ ] buttons to select D AB sta- tions.
42 Listening to the Radio —Continued D AB Setup Use the following functions and settings to set up D AB digital radio. ■ Preset Write? Select this to preset the current D AB station. See “Pre- setting AM/FM/D AB Stations Manually” on page 44 for more information.
43 Listening to the Radio —Continued W ith the Auto Preset function, you can automatically preset all of the FM radio stations a vailable in your area in one go. Presets make it easy to select your fa vorite stations and eliminate the need to tune the radio manually each time you want to change stations.

On the CR-515D AB, you can also use the fr ont panel controls. 1 Use the [INPUT] b utton to select AM, FM, or DAB. 2T o select D AB stations, press the Stop [ ] button for 3 seconds until “Preset Mode” appears on the dis- play .
46 Listening to the Radio —Continued Y ou can name presets for easy identification. The preset name may contain of up to eight characters. On the CR-515D AB, you can also use the fr ont panel controls. 1 Select the preset you w ant to name (see page 45).

49 Setting the Cloc k The AccuClock function normally uses the FM station with the strongest signal to set the clock. Ho wev er , if the clock cannot be set properly using that station, you can specify which FM station the AccuClock function should use.
50 Setting the Clock —Continued The time can be displayed in either 12- or 24-hour for- mat. Displaying the Da y and Time To display the day and time, press the remote controller’ s [CLOCK CALL] button. If the CD receiv er is on Standby , the time is displayed for 8 seconds.
51 Using the Timer s The CD receiv er has five timers: four programmable tim- ers for automated playback or recording, and a sleep timer for turning the CD receiv er off after a specified period. The timers can be used with other Onkyo components that are connected to the CD receiv er via (see pages 20 to 24 for hookup details).
52 Using the Timers —Continued Notes: •Y ou must set the clock before you can program the timers. • Before programming a timer to turn on the radio, you must preset the station you want to use.
53 Using the Timers —Continued To return to step 1 and start timer programming all over again, press the [MENU/NO] button at an y point in this procedure. 7 If you selected Once, use the Pre- vious and Next [ ]/[ ] b ut- tons to select the day , and then press [ENTER].
54 Using the Timers —Continued Once a timer has been programmed, you can turn it on or off as necessary . For e xample, while you’ re on holiday , you may want to turn of f the timer you use as an early- morning alarm. T urning Timers On and Off 1 Press the [TIMER] button repeat- edly to select timer 1, 2, 3, or 4.
55 Using the Timers —Continued W ith the sleep timer , you can set the CD receiv er so that it automatically turns off after a specified period. Checking the Remaining Sleep Time To check the remaining sleep time, press the [SLEEP] button.
56 Tr oubleshooting If you hav e any trouble using the CD recei ver, look for a solution in this section. Can’t turn on the CD receiver. • Make sure that the po wer cord is properly plugged into the wall outlet (see page 25). • Unplug the power cord from the w all outlet, wait 5 seconds or more, then plug it in again.
57 Tr oubleshooting —Contin ued Can’t add tracks to the pla ylist for memory pla yback. • Make sure there’ s a disc in the CD receiver. Also, you can only add valid track numbers. F or example, if the CD contains 11 tracks, you cannot add track #12.
58 Tr oubleshooting —Contin ued No sound is heard fr om a connected component. • Make sure the optical digital audio cable is not bent or damaged. • On the external component, set the digital output format to PCM, as the CD recei ver supports only PCM signals.
