2-12 General Description DISK ACCESS L ED ( ) The DISK ACCESS LED indicat es the status of the hard disk drive mounted in t he 3.5-inch dis k bay . The LED turns green each time access is made to the hard dis k drive. When the DISK ACCESS LED turns amber , it indicates that a hard di sk drive failure has occurred.
General Description 2-13 Hard Disk Drive LED The disk LED m ounted in the 3.5-inch di sk bay indicates the following depen ding on the stat us: Flashing (green) The LED indicates that the hard disk dri ve is accessed. On (amber) The LED indicat es a failure of a har d disk drive m ounted in disk array configuration.
2-14 General Description LAN Connector LEDs There are two LED s for each of the two LA N ports (connectors) on the rear pane l. LINK/ACT LED Each LINK/ACT LED indicates the status of the standard network por t of the server . While power is supplied to the server and HUB and the conn ection is correct, the LED is on (green).
General Description 2-15 AC POWER LED There is an AC POWER LED for t he power suppl y unit on the rear . T he LED turns green and flashes when the power supply un it receives AC power from the pow er co rd, which is connected to the AC inlet. The LED turns g reen when the ser ver power swit ch is turned on.

2-22 General Description DEGRADA TION FEA TURE The degradation featur e automatically isolates a failed D IMM or processor to assure contin uous operation of the server when the POST (Power On Self-T est, self-diagnosis program after power on) detects such a DIMM or proces sor .

General Description 2-33 POST Execution Flow The following describes the p rogress of POST in the chronological order . IMPORT ANT : Do not m ake key entries or perform mouse operations w hile POST is in progress. Some system configurations may display the message "Press Any Key" to prom pt a key entry .
2-34 General Description 4. POST displays SCSI ID numbers use d by the connecte d SCSI devices o n the screen. 5. After a few seconds, POST displays the following message prompting you to launch the BIOS setup utility , SETUP , stored in the system memory of the server .

General Description 2-39 CD-ROM Drive The server is provided with the CD-ROM drive on its front to read data from a CD-ROM (read-only compact disk). The CD-ROM provi des large r and faster data read than the fl oppy disk. CAUTION Observe the following inst ructions to use the server safel y.
2-40 General Description 5. As shown in the figure below , hold the tray with a hand and press the CD-ROM with fingers of ano ther hand to make the hole of the CD-ROM fit to the rotor at the center of the tray . 6. Push the front of the tray ligh tly to retract it into the drive.

Chapter 3 Setting Up Y our Server This chapter describes how to set up the server a ppropriate for you r system, on a step-by-step basis..
3-2 Setting Up Y our Server SETUP FLOW Follow the flowchart below to set up the server . Selecting the server site Select a suitable site for the server . Assemble the 19-inch rack assembly . Unpacking the system Unpack the server and accessories from the chipping carton box.
Setting Up Y our Server 3-3 SELECTING SER VER SITE T o use the serv er , install it on a standard EIA 19-inch rack assembly . Refer to the documentation attach ed to the rack or contact your servi ce representative for the installation of the server on th e rack.
3-4 Setting Up Y our Serv er Do not install the rack in the places listed below . Installing the rack or m ounting the server on the rack in such a place may cause som e malfunction to occur .
Setting Up Y our Server 3-5 UNP ACKING THE SYSTEM When you receive your system , inspect the shipping containers prior to unpa cking. If the shipping boxes are dam aged, note the dam age, and if possi ble, p hotograph i t for reference . After rem oving the contents of the containers, kee p the cartons and the packing materials.

Setting Up Y our Server 3-7 Inst allation Procedure for NEC Rack/Third V endor's Rack This server can be installed in either the NEC rack or a third vendor's rack. T ake the following procedure to install the server in th e rack: IMPORTANT: When installing the op tional cable arm, see the instruction manual provid ed with the cable arm.
3-8 Setting Up Y our Server Only the inner rails remain screwed to the server when the rail assemblies have been removed. IMPORTANT: The removed rail assemblies are to be installed on the inner rails later . T o install each rail assembly on the correct inner rail, make a mark on the assemblies.
Setting Up Y our Server 3-9 Inst alling the Core Nut s Install three core nuts on the front of the rack fo r each of the right and left sid es and also two core nuts on the rear of the rack fo r each of the ri ght and left si des. Install three c ore nuts in 1U (t he minimum unit of rack hei ght).
3-10 Setting U p Y our Server Inst alling the Rail Assemblies Make sure of the right side rail assembly or the left one when installing it. See the figure below . 1. Loosen a screw securing the rail assem bly . 2. Align the front and rear frames of rail assem bly to the location where the core nuts are installed.

3-12 Setting U p Y our Server 2. At least two persons are required to insta ll the serv er . Securely hold the server and install it in the rack. Firmly fit the inner rails on the sides of the server into the rail assem b lies that are installed on the rack, and then slowly push th e server into the rack.
Setting Up Y our Server 3-13 Securing the Server 1. Push the server into the rack as far as it will g o. 2. T ig hten the right and left captive thumb screws on the front panel to secu re the server to the rack. 3. Install the front bezel. This completes the installing of the serv er .
3-14 Setting U p Y our Server Removing the Server from the Rack Assembly The server shoul d be rem oved from the rac k by at least two persons. W A RNI NG Observe the following instructions to us e the server safely. Failure to follow these instructions may result in death or serious p ersonal injury.
Setting Up Y our Server 3-15 5. Hold the handle and pull out th e server from the rack slowly and carefully . The server clicks to be latched. 6. Pull out the server from the rack with the right and left release lever pressed to release the latch.
3-16 Setting U p Y our Server CONNECTING PERIPHERAL DEVICES Connect periphe ral devices to the ser ver . The server i s provided wit h connectors for wide variet y of peripheral devices on its front and rear.

Setting Up Y our Server 3-19 T o co nnect the pow er cord fro m the server to an uninterrup tive power supply (UPS), use service outlets on the rear of the UPS. The UPS service outlets are categorized i nto two groups: SWITCH OUT and UN-SW ITCH OUT . (They may be cal led "OUTPUT1" an d "OUTPUT2".
3-20 Setting U p Y our Server TURNING ON THE SERVER T u rn on the server and follow the on-screen instructions for setup. IMPORT ANT : Before turning on the server: Some optional boards require setups with the SETUP utility before installation.
Setting Up Y our Server 3-21 The POWER LED on the front of the server com es on. In a few seconds, the NEC logo a ppears on the sc reen and the Power On Self-T est (POST) begins. The POST runs automatically when you power on the server or reset it with a keyboard operation ( Ct rl + Alt + Delete ).

Chapter 4 Configuring Y our Server Configuration and setup utilities are used to change your system configuration. Y ou can configure your system, as well as option boards you may add to your system, using the BIOS Setup Utility . Several unique system parameters are configured using the BIOS Setup, which is stored in the system FLASH memory .
4-2 Configuring Y our Server St arting SETUP Utility Powering on t he server starts POST (Power On Se lf-T est) and displays its check results. If the NEC logo is displayed, press Esc . After a few seconds, the following message appears at bottom left on the sc reen.
