AB OU T THE L 54 Though the L 54 is among the most technically sophisticated integrat ed Stereo DVD receivers, we worked hard to make it one of the most musically transparent home-theatre components available as well - this is what we mean by NAD’ s “Music First” design philosophy .

12 INPUT SELECT : Use to select an audio/video input along with its assigned analog or digital inputs T oggle to select through: Internal DVD ➜ CABLE/SA T ➜ VCR ➜ VIDEO 4 ➜ Internal AM tuner ➜ Internal FM tuner ➜ then back to Internal DVD .
1 SPEAKERS : Connect the left and right terminals to the corresponding loudspeakers. Each output’ s “+” (red) terminal and “-” (black) terminal must be connected to the corresponding “+” and “-” terminals of the loudspeaker . Use ex tra care to ensur e that no stray wires or strands cross between posts or terminals at either end.
7 DIGIT AL INPUTS, OPTICAL & COA XIAL : Connect to the coaxial/ optical S/PDIF-format digital output of sources such as VCRs, HD T V, satellite tuners or other components. Connect OPTICAL/C OAXIAL DIGIT AL INPUT to an S/PDIF-format digital output.
GETTING ST ARTED Before you make the rst connection to your L 54, you should ha ve the arrangement of your listening room/home theater components and furniture mapped out, at least initially . Unfortunately, a discussion of the vital questions of loudspeaker placement and listening/viewing positions is beyond our scope here.
ABOUT THE ON-SCREEN DISPLA Y (OSD) The L 54 employs a self-explanator y on-screen display “menu” for the internal DVD player . This “menu” will appear on the connected video monitor/T V and is required during the setup process (useful in day-to-day operation), so be sure to connect the monitor/T V before pr oceeding with setup.
D YNAMIC RANGE C ONTROL DRC Y ou can select the eective dynamic range (subjective range from soft to loud) for playback of Dolby 2.0 soundtracks. Settings of 25%, 50% and 75% progr essively reduce dynamic range, making soft sounds comparatively louder while limiting the peak loudness of loud ones.
Y ou may operate the L 54 DVD Receiver from its front panel or via the HTR 4 r emote control. Since the remote will be the primary controller for most cases, we will f ocus on remote- controlled operations. Be sure also to read the section, “Front P anel” .

LA NG UAGE Select a language for the Setup menu and on-screen display . The f ollowing are the available languages – English, Fr ench, German, Dutch, Spanish, I talian, Russian and Swedish. SUBTITLE Depending on the DVD media, only those subtitle languages recorded on the DVD media are available.
P-SCAN If your television is a high-denition or “ digital ready ” television, you may take advantage of the L 54’ s progressiv e scan output for the highest video resolution possible. T o activate Pr ogressive Scan, set rst “ VIDEO OUT ” (see “ VIDEO OUT ” section below ) to “COMPONENT .
Depending on the media, the following are other basic f eatures of the L 54’ s internal DVD player . Mak e sure that you select “DVD” at the De vice Selector selection of the HTR 4 before you pr oceed with the specic function. TITLE AND MENU BUTTONS Both these buttons are only found on the HTR 4.
PROGRAMMING The program function enables you to stor e your favorite tracks from any disc in the play er memor y. When programming a sequence of tracks, the L 54 must be in st op or pause mode. T o program the sequence 1 Pr ess the HTR 4’s “PROGRAM” button to enter program mode and y ou will be prompted to a “PROGRAM INPUT ” menu.
The L 54’ s internal AM/FM tuner o ers ver y high quality sound from radio broadcasts. The reception and sound quality will always be dependent to a degree how e ver on the type of antenna(s) used as well as proximity to the br oadcast or igin, geograph y and weather conditions.
DELETING A STORED PRESET Y ou can empty a preset by deleting the stored inf or mation. 1 Select the preset number to be emptied. 2 First pr ess the DISPLA Y button and hold it in. While holding in the DISPLA Y button press the SETUP/ MEMORY button for about one half second , then release the SE TUP/MEMORY button.

LEARNING C ODES FROM OTHER REMOTES Begin by positioning the HTR 4 “nose-to-nose” with the source remote so the two devices’ infrared windows are about 2 inches apart.
MA CRO C OMMANDS A “macro ” command is a series of two or more remote codes issued automatically fr om a single keypress. Y ou might use a macro to automate a simple command sequence , such as, “ T urn on the DVD player and then press ‘play .
BUTTON ILLUMINA TION TIMEOUT The HTR 4’ s key-illumination can be set to remain lit for 0-9 seconds. The default value is 2 seconds. T o set the illumination timeout, simultaneously press-and-hold f.
L OADING C ODE LIBRARIES The HTR 4 can store a di erent librar y of default NAD codes for each of its Device Selector “pages. ” If the original default librar y does not control your NAD CD play er, tape deck, DVD player , or other component, follow the procedur e below to change the code -library.
CHECKING C ODE-LIBRARY NUMBER Y ou can check the current code-librar y on any Device Selector ke y as follo ws. Enter Librar y Mode by simultaneously pressing-and-holding for 3 seconds both the desir ed component ’ s Device Selector k ey and the [PROGRAM] key until the Learn LED turns green.

An important point after buying a device NAD L 54 (or even before the purchase) is to read its user manual. We should do this for several simple reasons:
