TS-590S CONTENTS I At the end of September , 2010 , the TS-590S, a Kenwo od HF band amateur radio transc eiver was launched af ter the 7-year l ong silence since the re leasing of TS-480S . As implied by this mode l name, TS-590S is the “legitim ate successor to the TS-570S”.
II CONTENTS TS-590S TS-590S was planned as the “legitimate successor t o the TS-570S” a fter 14 years or more of time have elap sed since the first market appe arance of TS-57 0S in 1996. TS-590S is ti tled with the 50 0s model number wit h the TS-570S bu t, needless to say , we started the developmen t as a totally new transceiver .
TS-590S CONTENTS 1 1 RECEPTION Receive performance is one of the key ind icators that is used to evaluate a transceiver . And , above all, the cap ability to protect agains t interference fr om adjacent signals close to the target signal is of the utmost importance.

4 DSP TS-590S CONTENTS 25 The manual notch filter is a notch filter with a freq uency that can be sh ifted with the no tch knob. The auto notch fil ter is a notch filter tha t automatical ly tracks a beat frequency with an adaptive filter technique. Bo th notch filter s have the a ttenuation of more than 60 dB at the center frequenc y .
4 DSP 26 CONTENTS TS-590S There are two setting s on the manual notch filter: Normal and Wi de. Y ou can choose one of two bandwid ths for the notch filte r (Figure 4-8).
4 DSP TS-590S CONTENTS 27 For the demodulation o f the RX signal in SSB, CW , FSK and SSB-DA T A modes, we have em ployed the proven PSN (Phase Sh ift Network) design again.
4 DSP 28 CONTENTS TS-590S Following is how t he TX signal is processed. The audio signal cap tured from the m icrophone or an external terminal is first processed by the b andwidth -limiting filter , .
4 DSP TS-590S CONTENTS 29 Beat cancel (BC), as it s name implie s, is designed to cancel unpleasant beat interference. Like N R1 (line enhancer), BC uses adaptive filter technology . With this technology BC tracks and cancels a beat signal just like shaping a band elimin ation filter .
4 DSP 30 CONTENTS TS-590S Figure 4-10 shows how BC cancels beat signals, as monitored by an FFT analyzer . Notice how multiple beat s are clearly removed by BC.
4 DSP TS-590S CONTENTS 31 Figure 4-1 1 NB2: Inactive Figure 4-12 NB2: Active However , depending on the nature of the pulse noise, the noise blan ker cannot suppr ess the noise effe ctively . In such a case, by using other meth ods such as noise re duction in conj unction, the reception cond itions may be impro ved.
4 DSP 32 CONTENTS TS-590S Unlike the conven tional noise reduct ion methods, the spectral subtract ion method of NR 1 is a brand new approach of noise reduction de veloped for the TS-590 S.

4 DSP 34 CONTENTS TS-590S As a noise suppre ssion process, th e line enhancer method based on a DSP ha s been adopte d by many amateu r radio transce ivers in recent years.
4 DSP TS-590S CONTENTS 35 NR2 is what is known as SP AC. It detect s periodic signals cont ained in th e RX signal and piec es together the d etected peri odic signals to p roduce outpu t receive audi o. As a result, o nly the peri odic signals in the rece ive audio emerge clearly .
4 DSP 36 CONTENTS TS-590S Figure 4-19 NR2: Active TS-590S also incorporate s an AF-type sp eech processor . Th ough it is an AF t ype, the speech processor provides sufficient compression through a uniq ue signal processing technique.
4 DSP TS-590S CONTENTS 37 Figure 4-20 show s how the wavefo rm changes when the sp eech processo r is toggled betw een active and inacti ve. Y ou ca n see that wh en the speech pro cessor is act ivated, the differences in amplitude are averaged and the talk power is increased.
