2 K ey Descriptions ∆ Cycles through eight settings to adjust the display contrast. ¢ Lets you store and access up to 50 numbers and names. ß Stores numbers and names in the Directory and in memory ke ys. ª Lets you mov e up and do wn any list such as the Set Options, Directory , or Redial List.

4 Basic Installation This section contains the information you need to install your 8314 telephone. Connecting the handset cor d Attach the handset cor d . Attach one end of the handset cord to the handset and the other end to the handset jack. Connecting the line cor d Attach the line cor d in jack n umber 1, as shown b y 1 .
5 Connecting an optional fax peripheral For y our fax machine, answering mac hine or modem; attach the line cord in jac k number 2 as sho wn by 2 . Attach one end of the line cord to jack number 2 and the other end of the line cord to the periph- eral.
6 Chec king your telephone When you first plug in your 8314, you may see a message asking you to make a language selec- tion. Follo w the directions on the display to select one of the languages. Y our telephone also runs a test to ensure that the line cord is connected properly .
7 Basic Features Making a call W ith the 8314 you can make a regular call or predial a telephone number . Predialing allows you to check the number before it is dialed out.
8 Making a handsfree call Y ou can dial without using the handset or you can make a re gular call and then talk without using the handset. Putting a call on m ute Y ou can turn OFF the microphone so that the caller can’t hear you b ut you can still hear the caller .
9 T elephone Setup Place y our 8314 on a table or Move the sliding panel o ver to the right hang it on a wall. Then adjust the display . to reveal the Set Options ke y . Changing the displa y language For changing b usiness requirements, you may wish to change the language of your display mes- sages.
10 T urning the ringer ON and OFF Note: Do not lift the handset while you are turning the ringer ON or OFF . Setting the ring tone and ringer v olume Y ou can choose one of four dif ferent ring tones and set the ringer volume.
11 Directory The 8314 keeps the numbers and names of your b usiness associates, clients, contacts, or friends at your fingertips. The 8314 lets you store up to 50 entries in alphabetical order so that you can dial numbers directly from the Directory .
12 Entering Names T o program a name, find the dial pad ke y that has the first character of the name. K eep w atching the display as you press the ke y until that character appears on the display . Press a different dial pad ke y for the ne xt character .
13 Editing in the Directory Deleting items fr om the Directory To edit a number and/or name in the Directory: 1. Press ¢ . 2. Press ª to find the item y ou want to edit. 3. T o begin editing, press “ . 4. If you do not w ant to change the number , go to step 5.
14 Memory keys Saving n umbers and names in memory keys Y ou can sav e the numbers and names of your customers, b usiness associates, or an yone you call frequently in 8314’ s eight memory ke ys. Y ou can store more numbers and names in the Direc- tory .
15 Labeling the memory keys After programming the memory ke ys, label them with the supplied blank labels and ke y caps. † Making calls fr om memory keys Editing memory keys Note: The Li ve dial pad option must be turned OFF to edit memory k eys. † K eep key caps and the sliding panel a way from small children.
16 Deleting memory keys Note: The Li ve dial pad option must be turned OFF to edit memory k eys. Saving f eatures in memory keys For easy access, you can sa v e the feature codes of telephone company services in your memory ke ys. This w orks well with network features such as Call F orwarding, Call Screen, and Call Return.
17 Saving a f eature and light in memory keys Y ou can make the set indicator light come ON when you turn a feature ON and go OFF when you turn that same feature OFF . Y ou can only do this with one feature. This works well with an y service that has separate ON and OFF codes such as Call Forw arding.
18 Ad v anced Features Adding a timer ke y Y ou can program any of the memory k eys to be a timer k ey . Using the Call Timer Y ou can program a memory ke y to time the length of a call.
19 Selecting the dial pad mode When you select the dial pad mode, you are turning the Li ve dial pad option on or of f. W ith Li ve dial pad ON, the telephone automatically dials out and turns on handsfree as soon as you press a dial pad ke y or a memory ke y .
20 Learning about the lights The set indicator light also alerts you when another extension is on the line, the telephone rings, or a feature is ON. There are also indicator lights beside the line k eys and © to sho w you the status of the lines and of handsfree and mute.

22 Helpful Hints The display is in the alternate language. Y ou can change to the other language by pressing the Set Options ke y and then ⁄ twice. The cursor doesn’t mov e when saving in the Dir ectory . The number or name is too long. Numbers can be no longer than 24 digits and names can be no longer than 16 characters.
