The Quickstar t W elcome to the QuickStart Section of this manual. This section will pro vide the information that you need to quickly install your G3 upgr ade in the PCI based Mac OS system. Installing the Car d 1. Attach the anti-static wrist str a p.
5. Install the MACh Speed G3 into your system. • The MACh Speed G3 Upg r ade will face the same direc - tion as the older card that you just remo v ed. In most cases this is with the heat sink to w ards the P o wer Supply . The connector is designed to fit only one w ay .
3. Enab le the MACh Speed G3 Backside Cache . • In the Control Panels folder of your start-up dri ve , dou - b le-click on the MACh Speed G3 Control. • This software controls the acti vation of the backside cache and controls the ra tio at which it oper ates.

R emo v e the MACh Speed G3 from its protecti v e packa ge. • Now that you are g r ounded, y ou can remove the MACh Speed from its protective packa ge . • Inspect the card for any ir re gularities or possible damage in shipment. 9. Install the g rounding clip. • T he clip slides o v er one wall of the top chassis. Make sur e the gr ounding clip also touches the CPU card heat sink.

8. R emo v e the CPU card that’s in the computer no w . • Grasp the edges of the card firmly and pull the card out of the slot. • Pull the card straight up without rocking it side-to-side . Do not pull on the heat sink because you might damage the card or your computer .
11. Install the MACh Speed G3 into your system. IMPOR T ANT : Handle by the edges only! Do not push down on the heat sink. Doing so may dama ge the card and/or computer . Excessiv e force is not needed to seat the card. if steady , gentle pressure does not work, pull the card out and insert a g ain.
13 . Plug the auxiliary fan (9500) into the connector on the main logic board. T here is only one cor rect wa y to insert the plug. Notice that the notch on the plug must face up • IMPOR T ANT : If the fan cannot close , so that both sides are latched, the CPU card is not fully inserted.

• When the card is proper ly installed, y ou cannot see any of the gold contacts. Installing the MACh Speed G3 Upgrade Card 10. . R e place the chassis by swinging it back into place • Using the handle, g ently swing the top chassis closed until it rests firmly on the bottom chassis .
13 . R eplace the computer co ver panel. • Align the bottom edges of the co v er panel with the com - puter chassis as shown belo w . • Then press the cov er panel onto the chassis until it snaps into place . Replacing the cover 14 . R econnect all ca bles.
1. Pr e pare the system and work area. •Prepare your work area by ensuring that you have a well lighted space, preferab l y not on carpet (less static), and awa y from all magnetic devices . • Put on the anti-static wrist str ap , as instructed earlier .
5. R emo v e the MACh Speed G3 from its protecti v e package . • Now that you are g rounded, y ou can remove the MACh Speed from its protective package. • Inspect the card for any ir regularities or possible dama ge in shipment, and check your cache type.
7 . Boot your Mac to test the Card/installation. • Check that you get a successful boot up “chime”, ensuring that the card is well seated and working . • Simply plug the po wer cord and k eyboard into the Mac , and start up the Mac . Once you have verified the “chime, y ou can disconnect po wer , and complete the card installa - tion.
Installing the Softwar e This chapter will pr o vide the information you need to ena ble the MACh Speeds incredible backside cache. It also pr o vides informa - tion on XLR8’s Processor Info Utility , which gi v es excellent feed - back on the CPU card’s cur rent status.
Information pro vided in the PI Utility includes: XLR8 Contact: T his is handy information for when you need to contact XLR8 for question or comments . CPU Speed: Checks the cur rent oper a ting speed of the CPU . Bus Speed: Pr ovides the cur r ent speed of the bus (connection) between the CPU and the motherboard.

Advanced Performance T uning W elcome to the Ad vanced Performance chapter . This chapter will pr ovide information on ena bling XLR8’s exclusiv e performance technolo gy , MVP . T his Chapter assumes that you ha ve the knowledge of a well v ersed technician, and that you understand how to remo v e and install various expansion cards.
1. Shut down your computer and remo ve the cover . • T o adjust the CPU to its maximum oper ating speed locate the curr ent speed settings in the ta ble at the left • K eeping a consistent R atio setting (switches 9-12), adjust s witches 1-8 to the BUS Speed at the next highest setting , (refer to the ta ble on the following pa ge).
Adjusting the Maximum Backside Cache Speed Backside cache is the r e volutionary new technolo gy that places Lev el 2 cache (high speed memory) directly on the CPU card, ded- icated to the G3 CPU . Since this is a dedicated cache technolo gy , on its own BUS, it is not limited to the slo w er fixed speed (±50 MHz) of the main logic board BUS .
Miscellaneous Performance Notes • Many factors ef f ect the performance of the CPU card. using high quality expansion products , cables and RAM will ensure that you hav e a system that can perform much f aster with a “tuned” MACh Speed upgrade.
