9 Introduction —Continued Supported Discs The D VD player supports the following discs. • The D VD player does not support disc types not listed. • The D VD player supports 8 cm and 12 cm discs. • Don’t use discs with an unusual shape, such as those shown belo w , because you may damage the DVD player .
10 Introduction —Continued MP3/WMA/JPEG Compatibility • The D VD player can play/display MP3, WMA, and JPEG files recorded on CD-R, CD-R W , DVD-R, D VD-R W , DVD+R and D VD+R W discs. • Discs must be in ISO 9660 Lev el 2 or Joliet format (folders can be up to eight lev els deep).
11 Introduction —Continued Handling Discs •N ev er touch the underside of a disc. Always hold discs by the edge, as shown. •N ev er attach adhesi ve tape or sticky labels to discs. Cleaning Discs •F or best results, keep your discs clean. Fingerprints and dust can affect the sound and picture quality and should be remov ed as follows.
12 Bef ore Using the D VD play er Notes: • If the remote controller doesn’t w ork reliably , try replacing both batteries. • Don’t mix ne w and old batteries, or different types of batteries. • If you intend not to use the remote controller for a long time, remov e the batteries to prev ent possible leakage and corrosion.
13 Fr ont & Rear P anels For detailed information, refer to the pages in brackets. A Standby/On b utton [26] This button is used to set the D VD player to On or Standby . B Standby indicator [26] This indicator lights up when the D VD player is in Standby .
14 Front & Rear P anels —Continued 1 D PRO LOGIC indicator The D indicator appears when playing Dolby Digital material. The PR O LOGIC indicator appears when the D VD player’ s Dolby Pro Logic decoder is on. 2 Disc type indicators These indicators show the type of disc loaded.
15 Front & Rear P anels —Continued A A UDIO OUTPUT [20, 22, 23] These jacks make up the multichannel analog audio output. The FR ONT/D.MIX jacks can be connected to a stereo input on a TV , hi-fi amp, or other compo- nent. The 1 and 2 jacks output the same signals, so use either pair .
16 Front & Rear P anels —Continued A Standby b utton [26] This button is used to set the D VD player to Standby . B On button [26] This button is used to turn on the D VD player . Don’t turn on the D VD player until you’ ve com- pleted, and double checked all connections (pages 20–25).
17 Front & Rear P anels —Continued N Open/Close button [28] This button is used to open and close the disc tray . O Searc h button [34, 35] This button is used to search for titles, chapters, groups, folders, tracks, and specific points in time.
18 Connecting the D VD play er AV Cables & Connectors Video Cable Jack Description HDMI HDMI connections can carry uncompressed, stan- dard or high definition digital video and digital audio, for the best picture and sound quality .
19 Connecting the D VD player —Continued The following matrix sho ws how the video outputs work in relation to the v arious video settings. *1 Depending on the native resolution of your TV, you may get no picture. *2 If your TV doesn’t support progressive scanning, you’ll get no picture.
20 Connecting the D VD player —Continued • Read the manuals supplied with your A V components. • Don’t connect the po wer cord until you’v e completed all audio and video connections.
21 Connecting the D VD player —Continued • Connect the D VD player directly to your TV . If you connect the D VD player through a VCR, TV/VCR combination, or video selector , the picture may be dis- torted because D VD-V ideo discs are usually copy pro- tected.
22 Connecting the D VD player —Continued Befor e Connecting • Before making any connections, turn of f the D VD player and A V receiv er , and disconnect them from the wall outlets.
23 Connecting the D VD player —Continued Connecting the Multichannel Analog Output Connect the D VD player’ s FRONT/D.MIX 1 or 2, SURR 1, CENTER, and SUBWOOFER jacks to the multichannel analog audio input on your A V receiv er . Y ou can use three stereo audio cables for this.
24 Connecting the D VD player —Continued This section shows ho w to connect the DVD player to a AV recei ver , HDTV , or projector that has an HDMI input socket. What is HDMI? HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) is a ne w connection format that can carry uncompressed, stan- dard or high definition digital video and digital audio.
25 Connecting the D VD player —Continued To control the D VD player with the remote controller when D VD player is located in a cabinet, you’ll need a commercially av ailable multiroom remote control kit. • Multiroom kits are made by Niles and Xantech.
26 Connecting the P ower/T urning on the D VD play er Befor e connecting • Make sure that all the connections on pages 18–25 are complete (the connection to a TV is required). Note: • This player features a screen sav er and an auto power off function.
27 Initial Setup This chapter explains the settings you need to make the very first time the D VD player is turned on. The very first time you turn on the D VD player, the Ini- tial Setup menu appears onscreen. Here you need to make a fe w settings to get the D VD player up and running.
28 Pla ying Discs This chapter cov ers basic playback. Advanced playback functions are cov ered in the next chapter . Important: • Throughout this manual, the term DV D refers to D VD- V ideo, D VD-Audio, D VD-R/R W , and D VD+R/R W discs. When a function is specific to a particular type of D VD disc, it will be specified.
29 Playing Discs —Continued Notes: • Prolonged display of the same picture or menu may cause irreparable damage to your TV screen kno wn as scr een burn-in . T o prev ent this, don’t keep playback paused for too long and always press the Stop [ ] but- ton when you’ ve finished playing a D VD-V ideo disc or VCD.
30 Playing Discs —Continued The North American model does not support DivX. This section explains ho w to fast forward and re verse. Note: •F ast forward and fast re verse cannot be used with WMA files. The North American model does not support DivX.
31 Playing Discs —Continued D VD-V ideo discs usually have a menu from which you can select titles, chapters, and other options, including soundtracks, subtitles, and audio formats (e.g., Dolby Digital or DTS). VCDs that support PBC (Playback Control) may also hav e an onscreen menu.
32 Playing Discs —Continued The North American model does not support DivX. This section explains ho w to play MP3, WMA, and DivX files with the Disc Na vigator . Note: • During random playback or memory playback, the arrow b uttons cannot be used.
33 Playing Discs —Continued This section explains ho w to display a slideshow of JPEG images on your TV . ■ To display thumbnails To display thumbnails, in step 3, after opening the folder you want to display , press the [T op Menu] button.

Notes: • In some cases, playback may start from a slightly dif- ferent point to the one that you specify . •T ime search may not work with some discs. •T ime search cannot be used while a D VD-V ideo or V ideo CD menu is displayed onscreen.
36 Adv anced Playbac k —Continued The North American model does not support DivX. W ith the Repeat function you can play a disc, title, chap- ter , group, track, or folder ov er-and-ov er again. Notes: • Repeat playback may not work with some discs.
37 Adv anced Playbac k —Continued W ith the Random function you can enjoy a random selection of titles, chapters, groups, tracks, or folders. Notes: • Random playback may not work with some discs. •T o use the Random function with a VCD that supports PBC, you must first turn off PBC (see page 31).

41 Adv anced Playbac k —Continued Some D VD-V ideo discs feature soundtracks in sev eral languages or audio formats (e.g., Dolby Digital or DTS). Music D VD-V ideo discs and D VD-Audio discs some- times feature audio in sev eral formats, such as PCM, Dolby Digital, or DTS.
42 Adv anced Playbac k —Continued Y ou can display various information about the current disc, title, chapter , or track as follows. The information displayed depends on the type of disc, as follows.
43 HDMI and Pr ogressive Settings This section explains ho w to turn on the HDMI OUT and change the video resolution when your TV or projector is connected to the HDMI OUT . The D VD player supports the following resolutions: A uto: The resolution is automatically set to the nativ e resolu- tion of the TV connected to the HDMI OUT .
44 Configuring the D VD play er This chapter explains the v arious functions and settings of the onscreen setup menus. Functions and settings are arranged into six menus: Picture , A udio , Language , Display , Operation Setting , and Initial .

46 Configuring the D VD player —Continued TV Shape W ith this setting you can select a picture format to match the aspect ratio of your TV . 4:3 Letter box (default): Choose this option if you hav e a standard TV (4:3 aspect ratio).
47 Configuring the D VD player —Continued HD Resolution W ith this setting you can set the video resolution for the HDMI OUT . See page 43 for more information. Auto: The resolution is automatically set to the nativ e resolution of the TV connected to the HDMI OUT .
48 Configuring the D VD player —Continued Digital/HDMI A udio Out W ith this setting you can configure the optical, coaxial, and HDMI digital outputs. All (default): Dolby Digital and DTS signals are out- put as they are. PCM: Dolby Digital and DTS signals are down mixed to 2 channels and output as PCM.
49 Configuring the D VD player —Continued Center Delay and Surr . Delay W ith these settings, you can adjust the multichannel out- put signals relativ e to the listening position. For 5.1-channel surround playback, ideally your speak- ers should all be the same distance away from the listen- ing position, but this isn’ t always practical.
50 Configuring the D VD player —Continued Downmix Setting W ith this setting you can configure the FR ONT/D.MIX A UDIO OUT jacks and A V CONNECTOR for use with a 2-channel stereo amp or an amp with a built-in Dolby Pro Logic decoder . It determines how multichannel audio sources are down mix ed.
51 Configuring the D VD player —Continued ■ Selecting Other Languages This section explains ho w to select other languages for disc menus, audio, and subtitles. Use this list when specifying other languages. 1 Select “Others” from the Disc Menu Language, A udio Lan- guage, or Subtitle menu, and then press [Enter].
52 Configuring the D VD player —Continued DivX Subtitle (Not North American model) Some DivX video discs include subtitles in one or more languages. The disc packaging will usually inform you about which subtitle languages are av ailable. W ith this setting you can select your preferred language for DivX subtitles.
53 Configuring the D VD player —Continued Setting the P arental Lock W ith the Parental Lock function you can block access to certain scenes that the authors hav e flagged as being unsuitable for children. Notes: • When entering a security code, you can use the [CLR] button to delete the numbers entered so f ar , if neces- sary .
54 Configuring the D VD player —Continued D VD Priority Contents This setting determines what is played when a D VD-Audio disc also contains D VD-V ideo material. D VD-A UDIO (default): The D VD-Audio material is played. D VD-VIDEO: The D VD-V ideo material is played.
55 Additional inf ormation Use this procedure to reset all the player’ s settings to the factory default. Y ou can adjust the brightness of the display as follows. All D VD-V ideo discs carry a region mark on the case somewhere that indicates which re gion(s) of the world the disc is compatible with.
56 Additional inf ormation —Continued ■ A udio CD Format Audio CDs contain tracks. ■ MP3, WMA & JPEG Files MP3, WMA, and JPEG files are typically organized into folders. The D VD player handles MP3, WMA, and JPEG files as tracks. Glossary Analog audio An electrical signal that directly represents sound.
57 Glossary —Continued HDMI *1 HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) is a high- speed digital interface which has the capability to sup- port standard, enhanced, or high-definition video plus standard to multichannel surround-sound audio on a sin- gle digital connection.
58 Tr oub leshooting Symptom Possible cause Remedy Can’t turn on the D VD player? The power cord is not connected. Connect the power cord to a suitable wall outlet (page 26). External interference is affecting the D VD player’ s digital circuitry .
59 Tr oubleshooting —Continued Symptom Possible cause Remedy No sound? No Sound from the HDMI OUT? The Digital/HDMI Audio Out setting is set to Off. Change the Digital/HDMI Audio Out setting to either All or PCM (page 48). The D VD player is connected to the D VI jack on your TV or A V receiver .
60 Tr oubleshooting —Continued Symptom Possible cause Remedy Can’t select MP3 files? MP3 files without a “.mp3” or “.MP3” file- name extension are not recognized. Use the correct filename extension (page 10). The MP3 disc is a multisession disc.
61 Tr oubleshooting —Continued If you’ re using an HDMI connection and there’ s no picture or sound, you can check the status of the HDMI connection by pressing and holding down the D VD player’ s [Display] button for 10 seconds until a message ID appears on the display .
