8 Introduction —Continued Supported Discs The DPS-5.4 supports the following discs. • Some audio CDs feature copy protection that doesn’ t conform to the official CD standard. Since these are nonstandard discs, they may not play properly in the DPS-5.
9 Introduction —Continued MP3/WMA Compatibility • This unit will play CD-R, and CD-R W discs contain- ing files sav ed in the MPEG-1 Audio Layer 3 (MP3) or W indo ws Media Audio (WMA) format with a sam- pling rate of 32*, 44.
10 Introduction —Continued Handling Discs •N ev er touch the underside of a disc. Always hold discs by the edge, as shown. •N ev er attach adhesi ve tape or stick y labels to discs. Cleaning Discs •F or best results, keep your discs clean. Fingerprints and dust can affect the sound and picture quality and should be remov ed as follows.
11 Bef ore Using the DPS-5.4 Notes: • The supplied batteries should last for about six months, although this will vary with usage. • If the remote controller doesn’t work reliably , try replacing both batteries. • Don’t mix ne w and old batteries, or dif ferent types of batteries.

14 Front & Rear P anels —Continued A IR IN/OUT (21) The IR IN connector can be used to connect a com- mercially av ailable IR recei ver , which can be used to pickup signals from the remote controller when the DPS-5.

17 Connecting the DPS-5.4 • Read the manuals supplied with your A V components. • Don’t connect the po wer cord until you’ ve completed all audio and video connections.
18 Connecting the DPS-5.4 —Continued The setup described here is a basic setup that allows you to play discs using just the A V cable supplied with the player . In this setup, stereo audio is played through the speakers in your TV . • This player is equipped with copy protection technol- ogy .
19 Connecting the DPS-5.4 —Continued • Connect the D VD Player to the TV directly . If you connect the D VD Player to a VCR, TV/VCR combina- tion, or video selector , the playback picture may be distorted as D VD videos are copy protected.
20 Connecting the DPS-5.4 —Continued 1. Connect one of DIGIT AL A UDIO OUTPUT jacks on this player to a digital input on y our A V recei ver . This enables you to listen to surround sound.
21 Connecting the DPS-5.4 —Continued Y ou can use the following multi-room kits to control the DPS-5.4 when it’ s out of range of the remote controller: • Integra Multi-Room System (IR Remote Controller Extension System) • Multiroom A V distrib ution and control systems such as those made by Niles® and Xantech®.
22 Connecting the P ower/T urning on the DPS-5.4 Befor e connecting • The DPS-5.4 is shipped with the Power switch in the on position ( On). When the po wer cord is plugged in for the first time, the DPS-5.4 will automatically enter the standby state and the Standby indicator will light (same condition after step 2 below).
23 Getting Star ted F or ease of use, this player makes e xtensive use of graph- ical on-screen displays (OSDs). Make sure that you select the input on the TV (by using the TV remote) to vie w the on-screen displays.

26 Getting Started —Continued The table below sho ws the basic controls on the remote controller for playing discs. Front panel contr ols The Play , Stop, and Pause buttons on the front panel work in exactly the same w ay as their remote control equiv alents.
27 Getting Started —Continued Many D VD-V ideo discs contain menus from which you can select what you want to watch. They may gi ve access to additional features, such as subtitle and audio lan- guage selection, or special features such as slideshows.
28 Pla ying discs Introduction Most of the features described in this chapter make use of on-screen displays. For an e xplanation of ho w to na v- igate these, see “Using the on-screen displays” on page 23.
29 Playing discs —Continued Y ou can fast-scan discs forward or backward at v arious different speeds. Y ou can play D VDs and V ideo CDs at four dif ferent for - w ard slo w motion speeds. D VD-V ideo discs can also be played at two re verse speeds.
30 Playing discs —Continued Y ou can advance or back up a D VD disc frame-by- frame. W ith V ideo CDs and VR format D VD-R Ws, you can only use frame advance. The A-B Repeat function allo ws you to specify tw o points (A and B) within a track (CD and V ideo CD) or title (D VD) that form a loop which is played ov er and over.
31 Playing discs —Continued Using the A-B button W ith the A-B button you can qucikly set the A-B Repeat function. Simply press the A-B b utton to set the A point. “ A” appears on the display . Pres the A-B button ag ain to set the B point. “B” appears on the display and A-B repeat playback starts.
32 Playing discs —Continued Use the random play function to play titles or chapters (D VD-V ideo) or tracks (CD, V ideo CD and WMA/MP3 discs) in a random order .
33 Playing discs —Continued This feature lets you program the play order of titles/ chapters/folders/tracks on a disc. •Y ou can’t use Program play with VR format D VD-R W discs, V ideo CDs playing in PBC mode, or while a D VD disc menu is being displayed.
34 Playing discs —Continued Tips: •T o sav e your program list and exit the program edit screen without starting playback, press Play Mode or Setup. (Don’t press Return—your program list w on’t be sav ed.) • During program play , press to skip to the next program step; press to go back to the previous program step.
35 Playing discs —Continued As well as creating and editing a program list, you can start program play , cancel program play , erase the pro- gram list, and memorize a program list from the Play Mode menu. Notes: • Program lists are sav ed for the D VD disc loaded.
36 Playing discs —Continued Notes: • The disc must be playing in order to use time search. • Search functions are not av ailable with V ideo CDs in PBC mode, or unfinalized CD-R/R W discs. Some D VD discs ha ve subtitles in one or more lan- guages; the disc box will usually tell you which subtitle languages are av ailable.
37 Playing discs —Continued Using the zoom feature you can magnify a part of the screen by a factor of 2 or 4, while watching a D VD or V ideo CD. Notes: •W e do not recommend using D VD disc menus when the screen is zoomed as menu options will not be high- lighted.
38 Playing discs —Continued V arious track, chapter and title information, as well as the video transmission rate for D VD discs, can be dis- played on-screen while a disc is playing. Note: •Y ou can see disc information (number of titles/chap- ters, tracks, folders and so on) from the Disc Navigator screen.
39 Vie wing JPEG discs After loading a CD/CD-R/R W containing JPEG pic- tures, press Play ( ) to start a slideshow from the first folder/picture on the disc.
40 Viewing JPEG discs —Contin ued The Photo Browser displays nine thumbnail images at a time from the current folder . Using the zoom feature you can magnify a part of the screen by a factor of 2 or 4, while vie wing pictures from a JPEG disc.
41 A udio Settings menu ■ Default setting: Off When watching Dolby Digital D VDs at lo w volume, it’ s easy to lose the quieter sounds completely—including some of the dialog. Switching Audio DRC (Dynamic Range Control) to On can help by bringing up the quieter sounds, while con- trolling loud peaks.
42 Video Adjust menu ■ Default setting: Standard From the V ideo Adjust screen you can select the standard video presentation or define presets of your own. Video Adjust 1 Press Setup and select “Video Adjust” from the on-screen dis- play . 2 Use the / (cursor left/right) buttons to select a preset.
43 Initial Settings menu The Initial Settings menu giv es you complete control in setting up your D VD player , including audio, and video output settings, audience limitation settings, among oth- ers. If an option is grayed out it means that it cannot be changed at the current time.
44 Initial Settings menu —Contin ued MPEG Out Y ou only need to make this setting if you connected this player to an A V recei ver (or other component) using one of the digital outputs.

49 Additional inf ormation D VD-V ideo discs come in sev eral different screen aspect ratios, ranging from TV programs, which are generally 4:3, to Cinema- Scope widescreen movies, with an aspect ratio of up to about 7:3. T elevisions, too, come in dif ferent aspect ratios; “stan- dard” 4:3 and widescreen 16:9.
