The machine ′ s vibration damping system reduces the tr ansfer of vibration between the engine unit/cutting equipment and the machine ′ s handle unit.

English – 13 GENERAL SAFETY PRECA UTIONS • File all the teeth to the same length. When the length of the cutting teeth is reduced to 4 mm (0.16") the chain is worn out and should be replaced. General advice on adjusting depth gauge setting • When you sharpen the cutting tooth (A) the depth gauge setting (C) will decrease.
14 – English GENERAL SAFETY PRECA UTIONS 455e Rancher • Release the knob by f olding it out. • T ur n the knob anti clockwise to loosen the bar co ver . • Adjust the tension on the chain by turning the wheel down (+) f or tighter tension and up (-) to loosen the tension.
English – 15 GENERAL SAFETY PRECA UTIONS Checking c hain lubrication • Check the chain lubrication each time you refuel. See instructions under the heading Lubr icating the bar tip sprock et. Aim the tip of the bar at a light coloured surf ace about 20 cm (8 inches) aw a y .
16 – English GENERAL SAFETY PRECA UTIONS Bar Check regularly: • Whether there are burrs on the edges of the bar . Remov e these with a file if necessar y . • Whether the groov e in the bar has become badly wor n. Replace the bar if necessar y .
English – 17 ASSEMBL Y Fitting the bar and c hain 455 Rancher , 460 Check that the chain br ake is in disengaged position b y moving the front hand guard to wards the front handle. Remov e the bar nuts and remo ve the clutch co ver (chain brak e). T ake off the tr anspor tation ring (A).
18 – English ASSEMBL Y T ension the chain by tur ning the wheel do wn (+). The chain should be tensioned until it does not sag from the underside of the bar . The chain is correctly tensioned when it does not sag from the underside of the bar , but can still be turned easily by hand.
English – 19 FUEL HANDLING Fuel Note! The machine is equipped with a two-strok e engine and must alwa ys be r un using a mixture of petrol and two-strok e oil. It is impor tant to accurately measure the amount of oil to be mix ed to ensure that the correct mixture is obtained.
20 – English FUEL HANDLING Fuelling Clean the area around the fuel cap . Clean the fuel and chain oil tanks regularly . The fuel filter must be replaced at least once a year . Contamination in the tanks causes malfunction. Make sure the fuel is w ell mixed b y shaking the container bef ore refuelling.
English – 21 ST AR TING AND ST OPPING Starting and stopping Cold engine Starting: The chain brak e must be engaged when the chain saw is started. Activ ate the brake b y moving the front hand guard f orwards. Ignition; choke (A): Set the choke control in the chok e position.
22 – English ST AR TING AND ST OPPING CA UTION! Do not pull the star ter cord all the wa y out and do not let go of the star ter handle when the cord is fully e xtended. This can damage the machine. Note! Reactivate the chain br ake b y pushing the front hand guard back to wards the front handle .
English – 23 W ORKING TECHNIQ UES Bef ore use: 1 Check that the chain br ake works correctly and is not damaged. 2 Check that the rear right hand guard is not damaged. 3 Check that the throttle loc kout w orks correctly and is not damaged. 4 Check that the stop s witch works correctly and is not damaged.
24 – English W ORKING TECHNIQ UES 5 T ake great care when cutting a tree that is in tension. A tree that is in tension ma y spring back to its normal position bef ore or after being cut. If you position yourself incorrectly or make the cut in the wrong place the tree ma y hit you or the machine and cause y ou to lose control.
English – 25 W ORKING TECHNIQ UES 7 T ake great care when you cut with the top edge of the bar , i.e. when cutting from the underside of the object. This is known as cutting on the push strok e. The chain tr ies to push the chain saw bac k tow ards the user .
26 – English W ORKING TECHNIQ UES Limbing When limbing thic k branches y ou should use the same approach as f or cutting. Cut difficult branches piece b y piece. Cutting If you ha v e a pile of logs, each log y ou attempt to cut should be remov ed from the pile, placed on a sa w horse or runners and cut individually .
English – 27 W ORKING TECHNIQ UES T ree felling technique Safe distance The saf e distance between a tree that is to be f elled and any one else working nearby is at least 2 1/2 tree lengths . Make sure that no-one else is in this ”risk zone” before or during felling.
28 – English W ORKING TECHNIQ UES Felling F elling is done using three cuts. First you mak e the directional cuts, which consist of the top cut and the bottom cut, then y ou finish with the f elling cut. By placing these cuts correctly you can control the f elling direction very accurately .
English – 29 W ORKING TECHNIQ UES When the f elling cut and directional cut are complete the tree should star t to f all by itself or with the aid of a f elling wedge or breaking bar .
30 – English W ORKING TECHNIQ UES Never cut straight thr ough a tree or branch that is in tension! If you m ust cut across tree/limb , make tw o to three cuts, one inch apar t, one to two inches deep . Continue to cut deeper until tree/limb bends and tension is released.
English – 31 MAINTENANCE General The user must only carry out the maintenance and ser vice work described in this Operator’ s Manual. More e xtensive work must be carried out by an authorised ser vice workshop .
32 – English MAINTENANCE High speed jet H At the factory the engine is adjusted at sea level. When working at a high altitude or in diff erent weather conditions, temperatures and atmospheric humidity , it may be necessary to make minor adjustments to the high speed jet.
English – 33 MAINTENANCE Checking the brake trig ger Place the chain sa w on firm ground and star t it. Make sure the chain does not touch the ground or any other object. See the instructions under the heading Star t and stop. Grasp the chain sa w fir mly , wrapping y our fingers and thumbs around the handles.
34 – English MAINTENANCE Stop switc h Star t the engine and mak e sure the engine stops when you mov e the stop s witch to the stop setting. Muffler Ne ver use a machine that has a f aulty muffler . Regularly check that the muffler is securely attached to the machine.
English – 35 MAINTENANCE • Undo the screw in the centre of the pulle y and remov e the pulley . Inser t and f asten a new starter cord to the pulley . Wind appro x. 3 tur ns of the star ter cord onto the pulle y . Connect the pulley to the recoil spring so that the end of the spring engages in the pulley .
36 – English MAINTENANCE Spark plug The spark plug condition is influenced by: • Incorrect carburettor adjustment. • An incorrect fuel mixture (too much or incorrect type of oil). • A dir ty air filter . These f actors cause deposits on the spark plug electrodes, which ma y result in operating problems and starting difficulties.
English – 37 MAINTENANCE Cooling system T o keep the working temperature as low as possib le the machine is equipped with a cooling system. The cooling system consists of: 1 Air intake on the starter . 2 Air guide plate. 3 Fins on the flywheel. 4 Cooling fins on the cylinder .
