hp fax 1020 series Q-2 Loading paper To load paper follow these instructions. 1 P ull the paper tray cover forward. 2 F an, neatly stack, then insert up to 100 sh eets of paper. If necessary, VTXHH]H and move the media guides until they to uch the paper.
Quick Start Q-3 Setting the paper size The fax machine can print on three paper sizes: L etter, A4 , and Legal. Le tter or A4 will be the default paper si ze, depending on the country setting. Tip! If your faxes are being clipped in width or length, verify that the correct country is selected under the C o untry and L anguage menu option.

hp fax 1020 series 12 Using Answer P attern (Distinctive Ring P attern) Distinctive R ing is a serv ice you subscribe to thro ugh your local telephone company (not all telephone companies provide this service) . The telephone company will assign more th an one te lephone number to a single telepho ne line.
Setting Up to Receive Faxes 13 • When the fax detects a Double Ring pattern, it immediately answe r s and attempts to receive a fax. • When the fax detects a Single R ing pa ttern, the TAM R ing C ount will be used before the HP F ax answers the call.
hp fax 1020 series 14 Silent Detect Silent Detect refers to re ceiving faxes from older ma chines that do not send fax tones. This setting causes the HP F ax to wait and attempt to receive a fax if it does not hear a voice. 1P r e s s t h e Menu button.
Setting Up to Receive Faxes 15 Using an External Answering Machine To use an external answering machine with your HP F ax follow these steps. 1 Set the Answer Mode to F AX. See “Setting the Answer Mode” on page 8. 2 Set the F ax Ring Count to be hi gher than the external answering machine’s ring count .

25 4 Answering M achine Important! To use the answering machine, the Answer Mode must be set to TAM/F AX. See “Setting the Answer Mode” on page 8. Your fax machine includ es an integrated telephone answering machine (TAM) . The answering machine is di gital.
hp fax 1020 series 26 Recordin g O utgoing M essages Before using the answering machine, you must record a greeting or outgoing message (OGM). The outgoi ng message must be between 2 and 4 0 seconds long. K eep your message as short as possible to ensure that all faxes are received.
Answering Machine 27 Listening to Messages When messa ges have been recei ved, the Messages light wi ll blink. Use the buttons for the following tasks: • Pla y — P lays all messages starting with the new ones. Pressing Pl a y in the middle of a mess age will pause it; press Pl ay again to restart.
hp fax 1020 series 28 Screening Calls You can set the answering machine so that you c an hear messages as they are being recorded. You can then choos e to pick up th e telephone. T he default setting for C all Screening is On. 1P r e s s Men u . 1:Fax Func tions will display.
Answering Machine 29 Changing the Length of M essages You can change the time available for incoming messages from the default of 60 s e c o n d s t o 30 , 90 , o r 1 2 0 s e c o n d s . The messa ge length will b e automatically adju sted for shorter messag es.
hp fax 1020 series 30 Listening to Messages Remotely You can pick up your messages from any touch tone telephone using your P IN (personal identifica tion number) C ode. Select a 3-digit numb er that you will remember. Important! If you want to access your TA M remotely, you must change the PI N C ode from the default *000.
Answering Machine 31 Ret r ie vi n g me ss a g e s 1 Dial your fax machine from any touch tone telephone. 2 While the outgoing mess age is playing, enter an asterisk ( *) plus the P IN C ode you selected. F or example, if your PIN C ode is 12 3, you would enter *123 .
hp fax 1020 series 32 ([DPSOHRIUHPRWHDQVZHULQJPDFKLQHXVH Assume you are travelling away from home and want to check your answering machine and change your PI N code. Your P IN code is 12 3 . You want to change the P I N code to 4 5 6 .
33 5 F ax Functions This chapter will in troduce you to the various faxing features of the product. Receiving F axes How you receive faxes depends on how Answer Mode is set. Be sure you have set th e answer mode to best me et your needs. See “Setting the Answer Mode” on page 8.
hp fax 1020 series 34 Sending a F ax You can send a fax using several methods. • Standard method—s cans and sends each page • Scan and fax—scans al l of the pages before starting to send. This is very useful for multiple pag e faxes so that you can determine that all pages are scanned properly before sending starts.
Fax Functions 35 Scan & Fa x Scan & F ax can be used for an individual fax document or set as a default for all faxes. When you use Scan & F ax, all pages of the fa x document are scanned before the number is dialed. This fea tu re allows you to make sure that all pages are scanne d properly before walking a way from the machine.

Fax Functions 37 Sending a fax to multiple numbers To send a fax to a distribution list (als o called a broadcast l ist) , you must first have created that distribu tion list. See “Creating the broadcast list” on page 20. 1 P lace the d ocument into the fax.

Fax Functions 39 F ax Settings Several settings are availabl e to change the appearance of your sent faxes. These settings do not affect incoming faxes. Contrast The contrast button on the front panel allows you to lighten or darken the image for the next fax you send or co py you make.
hp fax 1020 series 40 Reso lut ion R esolution sets the quality of faxes you send and copies you make. You can adjust resolution for an individual fax or copy or for all faxes and copies. ,QGLYLGXDO To set R esolution for an individual fax or copy, use the Reso lut ion button on the front panel.

hp fax 1020 series 62 Cleaning the Print Cartridge If you start seeing streaks or missing pa rts in your printing, first look at the print cartridge to make sure you still have ink. If you have ink and still have problems, make s ure paper is loaded and follow th ese steps.
