We l c o m e W elcome to the HP Internet Handset User’ s Guide. Read this guide carefully to get the most out of your Hewlett-Packard product wi th Skype, and keep this guide in a safe place for future reference. Thank you for purchasing your HP product.
Getting Started What is Skype? Skype software enables you to make free* ca lls to your friends all over the world. Skype also offers paid ser vices such as SkypeOut, SkypeIn, and Skype V oicemail. SkypeOut is a ser vice that allows you to call ordinar y phones at low cost.
Glossary of T erms The following terms are used in this user guide. ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) Broadband Internet connection wh ere the download speed is fa ster than the upload speed. Application Software running on your computer , such as the HP Internet Handset software.
Connecting the HP Internet Handset T o connect the HP Internet Han dset, plug the USB c able from the phone into an available USB port on your computer or into a powered USB hub.
HP Software Installation 1 Insert the CD into your computer CD-ROM dr ive; the setup should star t automatically . If it does not start automatically , browse the CD-ROM drive using My Computer or Windows Explorer and click setup.
3 Read the software Licence Agreement. If you agree, click I agree , and then click Next to continue with the installation. 4 Enter your User Name and Company Name . W e recommended selecting the Anyo ne who uses this computer (all u sers) option. Click Next to continue with the installation.
6 Click Install to continue with the installation. The Setup Status screen shows the software insta llation progress, which can ta ke several minutes to install.
Restoring your Default Audio De vice back to the Sound Card When you install the HP Internet Handset on the co mputer , i t is automatically set by Windo ws as the default audio device. All sounds, such as music, Windows, and game sounds, play through the phone and not the computer speakers.
Skype Software Installation If you already have the latest version of the Skype sof tware installed, you can canc el the Skype installation at this point and ignore this section.
This screen shows the Skype software installat ion progress, which can take several minutes. When the installation is complete, click Star t Skype . 10 HP Internet Handset User’ s Guide.
Registering as a Skype User After installing Skype, you can see the Create Account scr een. If you do not have a free Skype user account, enter your details as requested, and then click Sign In to continue.
If you have a Skype account, the Create Account sc reen is not shown. Enter your Skype user name and password, and then click Sign in . 12 HP Internet Handset User’ s Guide.
Another Program W a nts T o Use Skype The first time you sign into Skype with the HP application running, you must authorize the connection access by selecting Allow this pr ogram to use Skype , and then clicking OK .
Examples of use are as follows: A call comes in on Skype: Click the Answer button on the S kype screen to take the call through the computer microphone and speakers. A call comes in on Skype: Lift the handset to take the call on the HP Internet Handset.
Configuration 1 Right-click the HP Intern et Handset icon on the Windows SysT ray . 2 Click Options . 3 Click the General tab and set any of the following options: Start HP software when I star t Windows Check this box to start the HP I nternet Handset software when you turn on your computer .
4 Click the Speech tab and set any of the following options: Speak Caller Nam e Check this box to hear the callers name when yo u receive a call. Y ou can then answer the call by pressing # or reject the call by replacing the handset.
Speech Properties The Speech Properties window allows you to configure t he Microsoft ® TTS Engine (T ext T o Speech) and to train the computer to recognize your voice. 1 Right-click the HP Intern et Handset icon on the SysTray and select Speech Options .
4 Click OK . 5 Click the Speech Recognition tab. 6 Click T rain Profile and follow the on-screen instructions. 7 Click OK when you are finished, or cli ck Cancel to exit without making any changes.
Making Calls V oice Dialling T o use voice dialli ng, right-click the HP Internet Handse t icon on the SysT ray and select Options . At the bottom of the Speech tab, place a check in the Enable Spe ech Recognition checkbox.

Uninstalling Skype Software 1 Click the Windows Star t Button and select Control Panel . 2 Select Add/Remove programs. 3 Select Skype and click Remo ve . Then follow the on-screen instructions. Identifying Software V ersions T o identify the version of the HP Inte rnet Handset software, right-click the HP Internet Handset icon on the SysT ray and click About . T o close the window , click OK . T o identify the version of Skyp e software, within Skype, click Help and then click About .
Software Updates Periodically , software updates become available. HP Internet Handset Updates A pop-up message appears when a new version of the HP Internet Handset software becomes available. Right-click the HP Internet Handset icon on the SysT ray , and then click Update to begin downloading and installing the update.
