DO NOT turn pieces with knots, splits, and other potentially dangerous conditions. Make sure joints of glued-up pieces have high quality bonds and won't fly apart during operation.

G04 56 V ariable Speed Wood Lathe - 1 7 - The tailstock is equipped with a cam-action clamping system to secure it to the lathe bed. When the lever is tightened, a locking plate lifts up and secures the tool rest to the bed. To position the tailstock along the bed: 1.

T o prev ent rusting, we recommend removing cen - ters when not in use and coating the tapers with a light la yer of lubric ant or metal protectant.
G04 56 V ariable Speed Wood Lathe - 1 9 - To remove the live center: 1. Turn the handwheel counterclockwise until the tailstock quill bottoms out, causing the center to be forced out of the quill. The tailstock quill lock handle must always be locked down while the lathe is in use.

-22- G0456 V ariable Spee d W ood L athe 9. Position the tool rest approximately 1 ⁄ 4 " away from the workpiece and approximately 1 ⁄ 8 " above the center line, as shown in Figure 25 . 10. Test the setup by hand-turning the workpiece to make sure there is enough clearance all the way around before starting.
G04 56 V ariable Speed Wood Lathe -23- 4. Thread the faceplate onto the headstock spindle and tighten securely. Note : If scre ws cannot be placed in the wor kpiec e, then a backing b lock can be glued to the wor kpiec e and attached to the fac eplate with screws.
-2 4- G 0456 V ariable Speed Wood L athe The disc sander accepts 12" diameter cloth or paper-backed PSA sanding discs, which are available through Grizzly (see Page 28 ). The sanding disc sticks to the surface of the cast iron disc, using the pressure sensitive adhesive backing (PSA) on the reverse side of the sandpa - per disc.
G04 56 V ariable Speed Wood Lathe -25- The most efficient way to get a perfect miter is to cut the workpiece slightly long and sand it to the desired dimension. Use the miter gauge to hold the workpiece at the desired angle. To perform miter sanding operations: 1.

G04 56 V ariable Speed Wood Lathe -3 1 - SYMPTO M POS SI BLE CA US E CORR ECTI VE ACTIO N Workpiece vibrates exces- sively. 1. Workpiece mounted incorrectly. 2. Workpiece warped, out of round, or is flawed. 3. Spindle speed is set too fast for mounted workpiece.
-32- G045 6 V ariable Speed Wood Lathe A misaligned hea dstock will not give you ac curat e results and may be dangerous. This procedure takes approximat ely 3 0 minutes to co mplete and requires you to remov e and disc ard the s andpa - per disc if it is installed.
G04 56 V ariable Speed Wood Lathe -33 - A loose or damaged V-belt will not adequately transfer po wer from the mo tor to the spindle. This procedure takes approximat ely 30 minutes to complete a nd requires you t o remo ve and discard the sand paper disc if it is installed.
