CHAPTER 4: Installing Components 30 7 Press down the tw o blue retaining clips (1) on the sid es of the top front cov er , then slid e the top front cover back ( 2) and lift it off the se rver .

Installing and r emoving drives Y our server’s basic configuration includes one op t i c a l d r i v e a n d a s m a n y a s f o u r S A T A o r S A S hot-swap hard drives .
CHAPTER 4: Installing Components 32 5 Loosen the thumbscrew (1) holding the retaining c lip (2) agains t the side of the optical drive, then move the retaining cl ip away from the drive. 6 Push the opti cal drive to the r ight to release the drive from the drive bay, then pull the drive out of th e bay .
www.gateway.com 33 9 Slide th e new optical drive into the drive bay , mak ing sure you align the dr ive with the retaining clips on bot h sides of the drive . 10 Push the retaining cl ip against the dr ive until snug, t hen tighten the thum bscrew to hold the drive i n place.
CHAPTER 4: Installing Components 34 3 Pull the dr ive carrier s traight out of the s erver . 4 If you are replacing a hard drive, remove the four screws from the bottom of the dr ive tray that secure the old hard driv e to the tray , then remove the drive from the tray .

CHAPTER 4: Installing Components 36 Installing memory Y our server supp orts eight 667 MHz fully-buffered DIMM s (FB-DIMMs) t o provide up to a maximum of 32 GB with fully -buffer ed support. Supported DIMM sizes include 512 MB, 1 GB, 2 GB, and 4 GB. DIMMs must be low-profile or ultra low -profile and cannot exc eed 1.

CHAPTER 4: Installing Components 38 Sparin g mode For the sparing mode, p lease follow the online spare FBDIMM c onfiguration requirements (in addition to genera l configuration requirements ) below: • When only DI MM1 and DIM M3 are being used, th ey must be fully populated w ith dual-rank FBDIMMs.
www.gateway.com 39 Installing and r emoving PCI expansion car ds The system board provides one 280-pin PCI-X/PCI-E x8 expansion slot and one PCI-E x8 expansio n slot. The PCI-X/PCI-E x8 exp ansion slot (on the left side when vie wed from the front of the s erver) can support one P CI-X 100MHz or one PCI-E x8 using the r iser card.
CHAPTER 4: Installing Components 40 5 Place the PCI rise r assembly on a stable, static- free surface, then loosen the scre w (3) holding the card lock in place. 6 Open the card lock ( 4), then pull out the PC I card (5). If you are not r eplacing the PCI card, insert th e slot cover into the back of the riser card assembly .
www.gateway.com 41 10 Insert the new PCI card into the riser card, making sur e any connectors extend through the slot at the back of the assembly and that t he ca rd is ful ly se ate d in th e ri ser card. 11 Close the loc k to hold the c ard in place, then replace the screw that hol ds the lock closed.
CHAPTER 4: Installing Components 42 6 Insert the replaceme nt fan group into the fan cage . 7 Connect the 6-pin fan tach cable from the fan to the fan board.
www.gateway.com 43 10 Connect the 6-pin fan tach c ables from the fans to the fan tach connectors on the fan boar d. 11 Follow the instr uctions in “Closing the ser ver case” on page 30 . Replacing or adding a pr ocessor The serv er is compat ible with as many a s two Intel ® Xeo n DP (Dual C ore) 5100 S eries processor s.
CHAPTER 4: Installing Components 44 4 Push down, then pull out and up on the two he at sink retention lev ers (1) and move them out of the way . 5 Remove the heat sink from the processor . If the heatsink sticks to t he processor , rotate the heatsink sli ghtly to loosen it.
www.gateway.com 45 8 Insert the new processor into the socket, making sure that the gold triangle on the corner is situated as sh own in the following i llustration.
CHAPTER 4: Installing Components 46 11 Push down the heat sink retaining l evers (3 ) and l ock them under the retaining hooks on the heat sink socket.
www.gateway.com 47 3 Press the re taining clip on the power suppl y to the left to release the power supply module from the chassis. 4 Pull the power supply module straight out of the server with the handle.
CHAPTER 4: Installing Components 48 7 Align the new power di stribution board with th e stand-off and locking tabs on the chassis, then place it on the stand-offs and slide it to ward the side of the chassis until t he tab clicks into place. 8 Replace the sc rew you previously removed.
www.gateway.com 49 6 Slide th e power cage ( 4) toward the front of the chassis to di sengage the l ocking tabs, then lift the power cage out of the chassis.
CHAPTER 4: Installing Components 50 8 Holding th e new backplane by the edges only , alig n it with the locki ng tabs on the chassis, then place it on the locking tabs and slide it t o the left until it s tops. 9 Tighten the thumbscrew to secure the back plane.
www.gateway.com 51 3 Press the r elease handle (1), then slide the RO MB battery pack for the mezza nine RAID card (2) toward the back of the chassis to release it fr om the locking tabs and lift it out of the chassis (3).
CHAPTER 4: Installing Components 52 4 Align the holes on one side of the board with the p lastic standoffs (1) and align the other side with the mezzanine board slot. 5 P u s h d o w n o n t h e b o a r d ( 2 ) t o s e a t i t i n the mezzanine board slot and onto the pl astic standoffs until the retaining tab s snap into place .
www.gateway.com 53 Replacing the CMOS battery If the server clock does not keep time or the settings in the BIOS Setup utili ty are not saved when you turn off the server , replace the CMOS battery w ith an equivalent ba ttery . T o rep lace the battery: 1 Print the appendix for “BIOS Setting s” o n page 91 in this guide.
CHAPTER 4: Installing Components 54 Replacing the control panel T o replace the control panel: 1 Follow the ins tructions in “Preventi ng static el ectricity d ischarge” on page 28 . Ma ke sure that you turn off the server , then unplug the power cord(s) and all other cables connected to the server .
www.gateway.com 55 6 Remove the heat sinks and proc essors by following the instructions in “Replacing or addi ng a processor” on page 43 . 7 Disconnect all cables from t he system board, noting their loc ations and orienta tion. (Y ou will reconnect the c ables after you install the new board.

CHAPTER 5: Using the BIO S Setup Utility 58 Opening the BIOS Setup utility The BIOS Setup utility stores basic s ettings for your server . These settings incl ude basic hardware configuration, resour ce settings, and password security . These settings are stored and saved even when the powe r is off .
www.gateway.com 59 Recovering the BIOS If you encounter a problem while you are updating the BIOS, such as a power outage, the BIOS update may not be successful. If the system cont inues to try to boot from the new , corrupted BIOS, you can manually reco ver the old BIOS so you can try another upd ate.
