1 1 Intr oduction This guide provides the operational and reference informati on to configure and ma nage the RAID controll ers installed in your Gateway 840 Series storage system. The controllers a re accessed through a VT -100 te rminal using a menu-based user interface, connected directly to the RAID controllers.

Configure your terminal using the procedures desc ribed in “U sing the VT -100 terminal” on page 7 .

All configurati o n pa rameters are stored on all hard drives that are members of the specific array . Th is makes it possible to remove and replace controllers without requiring any configuration changes.

This is the am ount of data that is written on a sin gle d rive before the controller mo v es to the next drive in the stripe.
30 Chapter 3: Cre ating Disk Arrays www .gate wa y .com In cases where y ou are performing larger writes to the controller , you could go up to 2 MB for a stripe size, since y o u have more data to c luster . Never exceed 2 M B for a stripe size, since the contr oller cannot cluster over this size.

Tips & T ricks The driv e capacit y reserve determines how m uch drive capacity to retain f or future cap acity fluctuatio ns of replacem ent drives .

40 Chapter 3: Cre ating Disk Arrays www .gate wa y .com The choices are Au t om a ti c , Disabled , and four pre-determined sizes. Select A utomatic (the default), and recommended setting. It lets the c ontroller determine the optimum setting. Disab led w ill turn off the read-ahead cache.
41 Configuring a rray read-a head and write back cache www .gate wa y .com Normally , write-intensive operations wi ll benefit through higher performa nce when writeback cache is enabled on that array . Read-i ntensive operations, such as a strea ming ser ver , may no t benefit from writeback cache.

47 Assign ing hot spa re drives www .gate wa y .com Assigning hot spare drives The process of configurin g fault tolerant arrays includes a ssigning drives for global or dedicated hot spa res. In the event of a drive failure, the controller will use a g lobal hot s pare to replac e the failed d rive in any array .

53 Expandi ng an array www .gate wa y .com Expanding an arra y The Expand Array option lets you expand the capacity of your existing array by adding more drives or a dding sub-arrays. Using a RAID 5 array example, adding more drives to the array lets you increase the capacity of that array .
