LBI-39175 A 3 MAINTENANCE PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE To ensure h igh operating eff iciency , and to preven t mech anical and electrical f ailures from interru pting sy stem operations, routin e checks sh ould be m ade of all m echanical an d electrical equipm ent at regular interv als.
L BI-39175A 4 DISASSEMBLY PROCEDURE To Remove the Unit from the Mounting Bracket 1. Remove Microphone, Power, and Accessory/Remote Control Cables, as required. 2. Remove the lock screws at the side of the radio unit, using a No. 20 TORX driver. 3.
LBI-39175 A 5 3. Disengage the four captive screw s on the rear half (also know n as th e Rem ote Interface Adapter, or RIA) of the Control Head. Slide the tw o halves apart, usin g care to avoid dam agi ng the black "O- Ring" moisture gasket attached to the RIA.

LBI-39175 A 9 TRACKING DATA The radio p ersonality contains certain information bytes know n as Tracking Data, which allow the radio computer to calibrate transmitter power, modulation deviation, and squelch threshold .
L BI-39175A 10 SETTING TRACKING DATA Normally , Tracking Data is set at the factor y , and need no t be re-loaded. Ho wever, the f ollowing repair situatio ns require re-loading some or all of the Tracking Data: SITUATION NEW TRACKING DATA Replace PA module RF Power, Squelch (Check: Re-load if necessary.
LBI-39175 A 11 TRANSMITTER ALIGNMENT The Transmitter consists of sy nthesizer, exciter, and pow er am plifier. These have been calibrated at the factory so the radio com puter autom atically adjusts RF pow er and m odulat ion devi ation, bas ed upon Tracking Data.
L BI-39175A 12 w ire board runs to separate f rom the board. Check for shorts and solder bridges before applying power. Failure to solder the transistor leads as directed may resul t in th e gen eration of RF loops that could dam age th e transistor or m ay cause low pow er outpu t.
LBI-39175 A 13 SQUELCH ADJUSTMENT Squelch th reshol d has been set at th e factory to 8 dB SINAD. A djust me nt of the threshol d requires chang ing the Tracking Data.
L BI-39175A 14 SERVICEABLE PARTS Control Unit - Switch Circuit CDF-368B/M No serviceable parts. Control Unit - Panel Control CMC-638 No serviceable parts.
LBI-39175 A 15 DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES This product can be easily measu red for m aintenance using a Communications Service M onitor, o f w hich several m odels are available. A ty pical test conf iguration for th e OR ION product is s how n in Figu re 5.
L BI-39175A 16 ADDITIONAL TOOLS REQUIRED • RF Pow er Attenu ator (30 dB, 150 w att, for trans mitters w ith RF pow er bey ond the capabilities of a Service Monitor) • Digital Voltmeter • Oscilloscope (optional) TRANSMITTER SYMPTOM DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE No RF power output.
LBI-39175 A 17 RECEIVER SYMPTOM DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE Low RF sensitivity. a. Pro gram a Conventional System w ith frequencies given in T ables 2 and 3. Use "EDACS3" PC Programming utility. b. Unscrew the PA m odule from th e TXRX module. Disconnect the coaxial cable P2 from J401 on the Sy nthesizer PWB.
L BI-39175A 18 CONTROL UNIT SYMPTOM DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE Radio dead at power-on (display dark and no lighted indicators) a. Check the battery con nections an d the Red lead A + fuse on the pow er cable.
LBI-39175 A 19 GENERAL SYMPTOM DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE Any hardware malfunction PWB substitution is a valid technique for service and re pair of the ORION product, since there are only a few circuit boards in the product: 1. RF Power Amplifier 2. Logic/IF/Audio 3.
