4 2 CONFIGURA TION 2.1 Configure PPP 1 (ADSL) This PPP interface sho uld already be conf igured for use with the I SP. You shoul d confirm that you hav e a working ADSL con ne ction before pro ceeding with this conf iguration. The PPP 1 interface needs to be conf igu red to be “always on”.

6 2.2 Configure PPP 4 ( PST N ) It will be necessary t o configure PPP 4 a s an out bound interface as the default is f or t he interface to accept incoming calls.
7 Click OK Configuration - Inte rfaces > PPP > PPP 0 - 4 > PPP 4 > Advanced The PSTN interface nee ds to be configured so t hat if PPP 1 (ADSL) is up and in s erv ice (i.e. passi ng dat a) then this interface is n ot allowed to init i at e a connection.
8 Click OK 2.3 Configure the Default Routes It is necessary t o configure two default routes, on e for PPP 1 and one f or PPP 4 . The PPP 1 default rout e needs to be set so PP P 4 i s dea ctivated when PPP 1 returns to service af ter a successful rec overy.
9 Click OK 2.4 Configure the Firewall The firewall should be configured t o m on itor the ICMP request s generated by PPP 1. If the firewall detect s that 3 consecut i v e ICMP echo request s hav e f ailed, it will take PP P 1 out of service and deactiv at ed thus allow ing PPP 4 to come up.

11 3 TES TING 3.1 Simulate a f ailure To test the fail ov er and r ecovery you will need t o configure the PPP interface to ping a I P address that you can easily stop respon ding to ICMP requ ests (either through the us e of a firewall or by phy sically disconnecting it from the network).
