2 78-18997-01 1 About this Guide This Guide explains how to install and co nfigure your Cisco Aironet 1140 Series A utonomous Access Point. This guide also provides mounting instru ctions and limited troublesh ooting procedures.

4 3 Overview This section explains necessary tasks prior to installing the 1140 series access point. Verifying Shipped Components T o unpack and verify the contents of the 1140 seri es access point and accessory kit, follow these steps: Step 1 Unpack and remove the acce ss point and the accessory kit from the shipping box.
5 Key Ports and Components Familiarize yourself wi th the acce ss point before continuing with the installation. Figure 2 shows the access point key components. 6 Performing a Site Survey Before you mount and deploy your access point, we recommend that you perform a site survey (or use a site planning tool) to determine the best location to install your access point. Y ou should have th e following information about your wireless network available: • Access point locations.
7 – Provide your organization’ s network administra to r with your access point MAC address. Y our network administrator wi ll query the DHCP server using the MAC address to identify the IP address. The MAC address is on a label attached to the bottom of the access point.
8 Assigning an IP A ddress Using the CLI Follow these steps to access the CLI using a T e lnet session. These steps are for a PC running Microsoft Windows with a T elnet terminal application. Check your PC operating instructions for detailed instructions.
9 5 Mounting the Access Point Cisco Aironet 3500, 1260, 1140, 1130, a nd 1040 series access points can be mounted in several configurations, includin g on a suspended ceiling , on a hard ceiling or wall, on an elecrtical or netw ork box, and above a su spended ceiling.
10 Step 4 If required, configure the power setting s as desc ribed in the previous se ction. Otherwise, Click Express Setup . The Express Setup page a ppears.
11 Step 5 Configure the settings using the fo llowing sections as a guid e. • Host Name—The host name (or system name) is a name for the access point that identifies it on your network. The system name appea rs in the titles of the management system pages.
12 • Default Gateway—The default gateway identifies the address the access point uses to access another network. This gateway is prov ided by your network ad ministrator . If DHCP is enabled, leave this field blan k. • W eb Server—This setting specifies the type of HTTP used to access the access point using a web browser .
13 – Throughput—Maximizes data volume handled by the access point b ut might reduce its range. – Range—Maximizes the access point range but might reduce throughput. – Default—The access point uses its default da ta rate settings for the radio selected.
14 Note Y ou can restore the acce ss point to its factor y defaults by unplugging the power j ack and plugging it back in while holding the Mode button down until the Ethernet LED turns amber (approximately 2 to 3 seconds). Enabling the R adio Interfaces The access point radios are disabled by default, an d there is no default SSID.
15 Configuring Basic Security Settings Y ou can use the Express Security page to create uniq ue SSIDs and assign one of four security types to them. This illustration shows the Express Security page.
16 you cannot create additional SSIDs with WP A authentication because they use different encryption settings. If you find that the security setting fo r an SSID conflicts with another SSID, you can delete one or more SSIDs to eliminate the conflict.
17 • Y ou cannot configure multiple WEP k eys. T o configure multiple WEP keys, click Security > Encryption Manager . • Y ou cannot assig n an SSID to a VLA N that is already configured on the access poin t. T o assign an SSID to an existing VLAN, choose Sec urity > SSID Manager .
18 Note If you do not use VLANS on your wireless LAN, the security options that you can assign to multiple SSIDs are limited. Refer to the Cisco IOS Software Configuration Guide for Cisco Aironet Access Points for VLAN details. 1. Click Apply . The SSID appears in the SSID table at the bottom of the pag e.
19 Note Regarding LED status colors, it is expected that there will be small varia tions in color inten sity and hue from unit to unit. This is within the normal range of the LED ma nufacturer’ s specifications and is not a defect. T able 2 shows the access point LED diagnostics for various conditions.
20 Configuring System Power Settings After connecting the access point to a power source, its status LED might be amber , w hich can indicate that the access point is unable to verify that th e power source equipment (PSE) is supplying sufficient power .
21 Figure 4 Low P ower Mode W ar ning Step 5 Set the power settings and power injector fields , and verify your switch status as shown in Ta b l e 3 . Note T o verify switch status, you need to use the switch CLI. See the Cisco IOS software configuration guide for your switch.
22 Step 6 Click Apply . The acce ss point reboots configure d with the power settings you specified. Note Y ou might have to refresh your browser screen to see the cu rrent status indicating that the access point radios are enabled.
