3 S afety Precautions Cong ratulations upon your selection of the CASSIOPEIA. Be sur e to read the following Safety Pr ecautions before trying to use it f or the fir st time . Note All mentions of “the unit” in the f ollowing precautions refer to the CASSIOPEIA.
4 Precautions During Use W ar ning Abnormal Conditions • Continued use of the unit while it is emitting smoke or strange odor crea tes the danger of fir e and electr ical shock.
5 Caution Avoid unstable surfaces. • Nev er place the unit on an unstable surface, on a high shelf, or in any other unstable location. Doing so can crea te the danger of the unit f alling and causing personal injury .
6 W ar ning • Nev er e xpose the batter y pac k to direct flame, do not throw it into fir e, fresh w a ter , or sea water . Doing so can dama ge the built in saf ety and protection mechanisms, and cause battery fluid to ignite, creating the danger of fir e and explosion.
7 AC Adapter W ar ning • Nev er use a volta g e tha t is different from that for which the A C adapter is rated. Also, do not plug the unit into a po w er outlet that is shared by other devices. Doing so creates the dang er of f ir e and electrical shock.
8 Operating Precautions The CASSIOPEIA is a precision digital instrument. Incorrect operation and rough handling can cause data storage problems and other malfunction. Be sure to read the f ollo wing precautions to ensur e proper oper ation. • Charge the battery pack as soon as possible when the y start to become weak.

12 Getting Ready Initial Setup After y ou f irst unpack your CASSIOPEIA, perform the follo wing initial setup procedure before using it for the first time. 1. Load the main ba ttery (rechar geable battery pack) (page 29). Important Be sure to use the A C Ada pter to char g e the battery pack before doing anything else.

16 Using the Stylus Data input and virtually all other operations are performed using a stylus, which is housed inside the stylus holder in the higher right corner of the CASSIOPEIA. The following defines the v arious opera tions that y ou can perf orm with the stylus.
17 Adjusting Display Contrast Perfor m the following oper ations to adjust display contrast and make f igures on the displa y dar k er or lighter . • Tap and then Settings . On the System tab, ta p Brightness . Follo w the instructions on your screen for adjusting the contrast.
18 Using the Cradle The cradle pr ovides quic k and easy connection between your CASSIOPEIA and a per sonal computer . CASSIOPEIA can also be pow ered fr om an A C power source w hen it is placed on the cradle. • The battery pack charges while the CASSIOPEIA is on the cr adle.
19 5. T aking care to align the ser ial connector on the bottom of the CASSIOPEIA with the connector on the cr adle, lo wer the CASSIOPEIA into the cradle as shown in the illustr ation below . Important Make sure the CASSIOPEIA lo wer s securely into the cradle as f ar as it can go.
20 Connecting the Cradle to a Computer The cradle has a USB ca ble for connection to a per sonal computer . Connect the end of the cab le to a USB port of the computer to whic h you want to connect. Important • See “Required System Configuration” on page 21 for details on the type of computer system required for use with the cradle.
21 T o connect to a computer using the CASSIOPEIA USB cable 1. Plug the USB ca ble into the USB port of your computer . 2. T urn off your CASSIOPEIA. 3. Connect the other end of the USB cable to your CASSIOPEIA. Required System Configuration The minimum system configuration required for running ActiveSync ® 3.

23 Using the AC Adapter Y ou can use the A C adapter to directly po wer the CASSIOPEIA or to suppl y po w er thr ough the cradle. T he battery pack charges w hile the CASSIOPEIA is dir ectly connected to a power source b y the A C ada pter or while it is on the cradle.
24 Infrared Communications The infrar ed port of this unit can be used to e xchange data with another CASSIOPEIA, or with another device equipped with infrared communication capabilities. Remember that the two infrared ports must be pointed directly at each other when performing comm unications.
25 1. Make sure your CASSIOPEIA is turned off. • Press the [Power] button to tur n off po wer . 2. Pressing upward a t the point indicated in the illustration, slide the cov er up to open it. 3. If there is already a card in the slot, remove it. 4. Slide the card you want to use into the card slot.
26 Digital Phone Connection Cable • U.S. and Canada: Use a cdma digital phone connection cable (JK-541CA). • For a GSM type digital phone, use a commercially a v aila b le ca ble that is compatible with the CASSIOPEIA connector .
27 Data communication may not be possible if you are within an area with poor signal r eception, ev en though it is within the service ar ea of your telephone ser vice pro vider . Also note tha t noise can cause er r ors and mak e communication impossible, e v en though the signal is strong.
28 Software Applications Software applications are available for purchase from Microsoft and third parties who support Windo ws CE. For details on commerciall y availa ble software applications, contact your local retailer or visit the Micr osoft W e b site a t http://www.
29 User Maintenance Batteries Y our CASSIOPEIA is powered by a dual pow er supply tha t consists of a main batter y (rechargeable battery pack) and a backup ba ttery (CR2032 lithium ba ttery). • W e r ecommend tha t y ou use the P o wer Properties to keep informed about the current levels of your main and backup ba tter ies.

31 3. Slide the battery cover s witch to MAIN , and then remove the main batter y cover . 4. Pull on the tape to r aise the main battery . 5. Remove the main battery and then load a new battery pack. • Make sure that the battery pack is oriented correctly .

33 Charging the Battery Pack 1. Install the battery pack into the CASSIOPEIA. 2. Attac h the A C adapter to the cr adle and place the CASSIOPEIA onto the cradle.
34 Resetting the Unit “Reset” is similar to a computer r eboot. Performing a reset deletes an y data that is in the process of being input or edited, without yet being sav ed.
35 Memory Error Message If the memor y c hec k operation that the unit perfor ms w hen the RESET b utton is pressed detects a da ta err or , the following message appears on the screen instead of the startup screen. “A problem with memory contents has been f ound.
36 Full Reset (Memory Initialize) Full reset (memory initialize) deletes all data, and resets all unit parameters to their initial defaults. The following ar e conditions when y ou should perform a full reset.
37 Errors Following a Full Reset Either of the following two conditions can cause err ors to continue, even after you perform a full reset. • Har d war e defect • System problem caused by f ailur .
38 T roubleshooting Before assuming malfunction and contacting your service provider when experiencing operational problems, be sur e to check the follo wing infor ma tion as well as the troubleshooting section of the P ocket PC User’ s Guide first.

Rechargeable battery pack life is very short after eac h charge. The low backup battery message continues to appear ev en after replacement of the bac kup ba tter y .
