Safety Precautions 11 Battery, Battery Charger Other Warnings • Use only recommended batteries. • Do not place the battery near or in direct flame. • Do not let the battery come into contact with water (e.g. sea water) or other liquids. • Do not attempt to disassemble, alter or apply heat to the battery.
Safety Precautions 12 • Playing back for a long time may cause feelings of discomfort. Caution • Do not aim the camera at bright light sources (the sun, etc.). Doing so may cause malfunctions or damage the image sensor. • When using the camera on a beach or at a windy location, be careful not to allow dust or sand to enter the camera.
13 Getting Started This chapter explains preparations before shooting, how to shoot in A mode, and then how to view, erase and print the images you take. The latter part of this chapter explains how to shoot and view movies and transfer images to a computer.
14 Use the incl uded charger t o charge the bat tery. Remove the cover. Insert the battery. ● Align the S marks on the battery and charger, t hen inse rt the b attery by sliding it in and down . Charge the battery. ● For CB-2LX: Flip out the pl ug and pl ug the charger i nto a power out let .
Charging the Battery 15 Approximate Number of Shots That Can Be Taken • The number of shots that can be taken is based on the Camera & Ima ging Products Association (CIPA) measurement standard. • Under some shooting conditions, fewer shots can be taken.
16 Insert the i ncluded ba ttery and a me mory card in to the camer a. Check the card’s write-protect tab. ● If the memory card has a write-protect tab, you will not be able to re cord image s if the tab is in th e locked pos ition. Sli de the tab up until you h ear a click .

Inserting the Battery and Memory Card 18 Approximate Number of Shots per Memory Card • Values are based on the default settings. • The number of shots that can be taken will vary depending on camera s ettings, the subject and the memory card used.
19 The Date/Time se ttings screen will appear th e first time th e camera is turn ed on. Since th e dates and time s recorded int o your image s are based on t hese settings, b e sure to s et them. Turn on the camera. ● Press the power button. X The Date/Time screen will ap pear.
Setting the Date and Time 20 Changing the Date and Time You can change the curren t date and time settings. Display the menus. ● Press the n butt on. Select [Date/Time] in the 3 tab. ● Press the qr buttons to selec t the 3 tab. ● Press the op butt ons or turn th e  dial to select [Date /Time], then pr ess the m button.
21 You can change the langua ge displayed in the LCD monito r menus and messages. Set the playback mode. ● Press the 1 butt on. Display the settings scr een. ● Press and hold the m button , then immediately pr ess the n button . Set the disp lay languag e.
22 Before you us e a new memory car d or one that ha s been used in other devices, yo u should for mat the car d with this came ra. Format ting (initializ ing) a memory car d erases all d ata on the memory card. As you cann ot retrieve the erased da ta, exercis e adequate caution befo re formatti ng the memory card.
23 The shutter button has two stops. T o take images that are in fo cus, be sur e to first pr ess the shu tter button lightly (halfway) to focus, th en take the s hot. Press halfway (lightly to the first stop). X The camera focu ses and auto matically selects the ne cessary se ttings for shooting, such as t he brig htness.
24 Since the came ra can dete rmine the subjec t and shoot ing conditi ons, you can let it a utomatically select the best setting s for the s cene and ju st shoot. The camera can a lso detect and focus on faces, sett ing the color and brightness to optimal le vels.
A Taking Pictures 25 Focus. ● Press the s hutter butto n halfway to focus. X When the came ra focuses, it will beep twice and the indicato r will light gr een (orange when t he flash will fire). X Green AF frames appear where th e subject is i n focus.
A Taking Pictures 26 • The lamp lights when the shutter button is pressed halfway? To reduce red-eye and to assist in focusing, the lamp may light when shooting in dark are as. • The h icon blinks when you try to take an image? The flash is charging.
27 You can view you r images on t he screen. Select the playb ack mode. ● Press the 1 butt on. X The last image y ou took will ap pear. Select an image. ● Pressing the q button will cycle through the images in reverse o rder. ● Pressing t he r button will cycle t hrough the images in the order th ey were take n.

X Printing will start and the c button w ill blink blue. ● If you want to print addit ional images , repeat Steps 5 and 6 after printing ha s completed. ● After prin ting has comple ted, turn o ff the camera and p rinter, and unplug the interface ca ble.
31 The camera can a utomatica lly select al l settings so that you can shoot movies just by pressing the shutter butt on. If you con tinue shooti ng for a long time, the camera may become warm. Th is is not a mal function. Set the mode dial to E . Select the E mode.
E Shooting Movies 32 Shoot. ● Press the shut ter button fully. X The camera will st art shooting t he movie, and [ Rec] and the elapsed t ime will appear on the s creen.

Zooming in More Closely on Subjects (Digital Zoom) 64 Digital Tele-Converter The focal le ngth of the lens can be i ncreased by an equivalent of 1.5x or 2.0x. This enables a faster shut ter speed a nd less chan ce of camera shake than the zoom (inc luding digital zoom) used by itself at the same zoom factor.
