11 • Before using the product, please ensure that you read the safety precautions described below. Always ensure that the product is used correctly. • The safety precautions noted on the following pages are intended to prevent injuries to yourself and other persons, or damage to the equipment.
Safety Precautions 12 • Use only the recommended battery. • Do not place the battery near or in direct flame. • Unplug the power cord periodically, and using a dry cloth, wipe away any dust and dirt that has collected on the plug, the exterior of the power outlet, and the surrounding area.
Safety Precautions 13 • Avoid using, placing or storing the product in the following places: - Places subject to strong sunlight - Places subject to temperatures above 4 0 °C (104 °F) - Humid or dusty areas These could cause leakage, overheating or an explosion of the ba ttery, resulting in electrical shock, fire, burns or other injuries.
Safety Precautions 14 • Unplug the battery charger from the power outlet after charging is complete, or when you are not using it. • Do not place anything, such as cloth, on top of the battery charger while it is charging. Leaving the unit plugged in for a long period of time may cause it to overheat a nd distort, resulting in fire.
15 The camera’s touch-scree n panel enable s intuitive op eration simpl y by touching o r tapping the scre en. Touch the sc reen briefly with your finger. z Th is gesture is us ed to shoot, conf igure camera functio ns, and so on. Touch the screen and mo ve your finger across it.
16 Prepare for shooting as fol lows. Attach the strap. z Th read the en d of the st rap throug h the strap hole ( ), and then pul l the other e nd of the strap thro ugh the loop on t he threaded e nd () .
Initial Preparations 17 Charge the battery. z Fo r CB-2LD: Flip out th e plug ( ) and plug the charger int o a power outlet ( ). z Fo r CB-2LDE: Plug the power c ord into the charger, th en plug the othe r end into a pow er outlet. X The chargi ng lamp turns orange and charging be gins.
Initial Preparations 18 Insert the battery. z While p ressing the battery lock in the direc tion of the arrow, insert the battery faci ng as shown and push it in until it clicks into the loc ked position. z If you insert the battery facing the wrong way, it cannot b e locked in to the corr ect position .

Initial Preparations 20 Insert a memor y card (sold se parately). Note that befor e using a new memory card (or a memory card formatted in another devi ce), you should format the memory card with this camera (p. 126). Check the card’s write-protect tab.
Initial Preparations 21 A screen for se tting the dat e and time is disp layed the f irst time you tur n the camera on. Be su re to specify t he date and time, wh ich is the basi s for dates and times add ed to your image s. Turn the camera on. z Press the power b utton.

Flash 101 Just as wit h the AE lock (p. 8 5), you can loc k the expo sure for th e flash shots. Set the flash to h (p. 100). Lock the flash expo sure. z Aim the camera at the subject t o shoot with the expos ure locked . With the sh utter butt on pressed hal fway, press the r button.
