4 Safety Precautions Please read the safety warnings and cautions prov ided in this guide to ensure that you use y our machine saf ely . Do not attempt to u se the machine in any way not des cribed in this guide. Wa r n i n g Y ou m ay cause a n electric shock/fire or damage the machine if you ignore any of these safety precaut ions.
5 Handling Do not attempt to disassemble or modify the machine. There are no user serviceable parts inside the machine. The machine contains high-voltage component s. Never attempt any maintenance procedure not described in this guide. Incorrect maintenance procedures may damage the machine, or cause a fire or electrical shock.
6 Power supply Never remove the plug by pulling on the cord. Pulling on the power cord may damage the cord and cause a fire or electrical shock. When turning OFF the power , be sure to press [ON/OFF] or unplug the machine.
7 Handling Close the Document Cover gently to avoid catching your hand. Failing to do so may result in personal injury . Do not press down hard on the Document Cover when using the Platen Glass to scan thick books. This may damage the Platen Glass and Document Cover and/or result in personal injury .
8 FINE Cartridges (Ink Cartridges) For safety reasons, store FINE Cartridges (Ink Cartridges) out of the reach of small children. If a child ingests any ink, consult a doctor immediately . Do not shake FINE Cartridges (Ink Cartridges). Ink may leak out and stain clothing or the surrounding area.

Chapter 1 10 Chapter 1 Before P rinting Before Printing Machine Part s And Their Functions This section provides the name and location of the main components of this machine, and also describes their functions. Machine z Exterior (1) Document Cover Covers the Platen Glass.
Chapter 1 11 Before P rinting (1 1) Operation Panel Displays the op erational status of the machi ne. I t is also used to change or chec k the settings of each f unction. For details, see “Operat ion Panel” on page 12. * The Bluetooth unit is n ot available to some regions due to the law of the c ountries or the regulations.

Please be sure to follow t he guidelines and meet the requirements when loading paper in the Auto Sheet Feeder . Canon Genuine Media Canon recommends that you use genuine Canon paper to insure optimal print quality .

Colors in dark images may appear indist inct at first, but will become clearer after approx. 30 minut es. z Images may smudge if you place them in an album before the ink is com pletely dry .
Chapter 1 23 Before P rinting Loading Paper Loading Paper Follow t his pr ocedure: 1 Open the Paper Suppo rt (1), th en pull ou t the Paper Support Extension (2). 2 Place a st ack of pap er (print sid e up) in t he Auto Sh eet Feeder (1) , pinch the Paper Guide (A) and ad just it to the lef t side of the sta ck (2).

Chapter 2 Chapter 2 31 Copying Copyin g Making Copies This section describes the basic procedure to make copies. 1 Prepare for cop ying. (1) Press [ON/OF F] to turn ON the mac hine. (2) Press [C OP Y]. (3) Load the paper in the Auto Sheet Feeder . See “Loading Paper ” on page 23.

Chapter 8 Chapter 8 65 Printing Photos F rom A Wir eless Commu nication Device Printing Photo s From A W irele ss Commun icatio n Device If you have a mobile phone with an inf rared port for wireless data transmission, you can print photos through a cordless connection with the machine.
66 Chapter 8 Printing Photos From A Wirele ss Communica tion Device Setting Items (1) Select the page size for printing. (2) Select the media type for printing. (3) Corrects the contours and smoothes out t he jaggedness that occurs when a small-sized photo is printed on large-sized paper .
Chapter 8 67 Printing Photos F rom A Wir eless Commu nication Device Performing Infrared Comm unication Y ou can print photos in your mobile phone thr ough infrared communication. When performing infrared communication, also refer to your mobile phone manual.
68 Chapter 8 Printing Photos From A Wirele ss Communica tion Device (2) Select the photo to print and send the data to the machine using the infrared communication function of the mobile phone. The ON/OFF lamp on the machine flashes in green when received the dat a properly .
Chapter 8 69 Printing Photos F rom A Wir eless Commu nication Device Performing Blu etooth Communication The following describes how to print photo co mmunicating Bluetooth mobile phones using the optional Bluetooth unit B U-20. For performing B luetooth communication, refer to the B luetooth User ’s Guide .
70 Chapter 8 Printing Photos From A Wirele ss Communica tion Device Setting Items (1) Select the device name of this machine displayed on the screen of the mobile phone. (2) Selecting ON will enable a passkey to be set or changed. Setting a passkey will help prevent interference f rom other Bluetooth dev ices.

72 Chapter 9 Chan ging The M achine Settings 4 Change the settings. (1) Use [ ] or [ ] to select the setting item, then press [OK]. Example: select <Small>. Print Settings Quiet mode Use this function if you want to reduce any operating noise, such as when printing at night.

Reset Setting Y ou can change t he settings back to the default, ex cept for the language for LCD messages and the position of the print head.
Chapter 10 Chapter 10 75 Routin e Maint enance Rou tine Main tena nce Replacing A FINE Cartridge If there is no improvement with the quality of printing following such maintenance as FINE Car tridge Cleaning, one of the FINE Cartridges is probably empty .
76 Chapter 10 Routin e Maintena nce 2 Remove the empty FINE Cartridge. (1) Push the FINE Cartridge down. (2) Remove the FINE Cartridge. Import ant z Ha ndle FINE Cartridges carefully to avoid staining your clothes or the surrounding work area. z Discard empty FINE Cartridges acc ording to local laws and disposal regulations.
Chapter 10 77 Routin e Maint enance 3 Prepare a repla cement F INE Cartridg e. * T o the Cartridge Holder . (1) Unpack a new FINE Cartridge and remove the Protective T ape. 4 Insert the new FINE Car tridge. Black FINE Cartridges should be installed into the left holder (B) and C olor FINE Cartridges should go into the right holder (C).
78 Chapter 10 Routin e Maintena nce 5 Close the Scanni ng Unit. Lift the Scanning Unit slightly to put the Scanning Unit Support back to its original posit ion. The FINE Cartridge Holder moves to the right. Note If the straight line is m isaligned or the FINE C artridge position is misaligned, align the FINE Cartridge position.
Chapter 10 79 Routin e Maint enance Knowing When T o Replace A FINE Cartridge It is important to identi fy the empty Cartridge using the LCD and replace it. z When Ink is Low An exclama tion above one or both FINE Cartridges s hows that the r emaining ink level is low.
80 Chapter 10 Routin e Maintena nce Note If an error m essage is displayed on the LCD, a FINE Cartridge error has occurred and the m achine cannot con tinue to print.
Chapter 10 81 Routin e Maint enance What Is A Low Ink Warning? The Low Ink Warning is the ink counter calculating the a remaining level of ink and adv ising you that the FIN E Cartridges are runn ing out of ink during printing.
82 Chapter 10 Routin e Maintena nce Note Setti ng of FINE Car tridge s If a FINE Cartridge runs out of ink, you can print with either the Color or Black FINE Cartridge only for a while. However the same printing quality cannot be expec ted, compared to printing with both c artridges.
Chapter 10 83 Routin e Maint enance z When the “?” mark appears on the Low Ink W arning If you install an old FINE Cartridge, the “?” icon appears for the FINE Cartridge in question. In this case, the remaining level of ink cannot be calculated correctly .
84 Chapter 10 Routin e Maintena nce When Pri nting Be come s Fain t Or C olor I s In correc t If the printing beco mes faint or t he colors are inco rrect, the FINE Car tridge Nozzles are probab ly clogged. Follow the procedures below to clean these nozzles.
Chapter 10 85 Routin e Maint enance Printing The Nozzle Check Pattern Print the nozzle check pattern to det ermine whether the ink is being ejected properly from t he FINE Cartridge Nozzles. Use this function when the printe d results are blurred or t he color is incorr ect.

Chapter 10 87 Routin e Maint enance Examining The Nozzle Check Patt ern The nozzle check pattern should appea r as follows when ink is discharged properly . Examine the nozzle check pattern output by the machine. z If the lines are broken (1), or white lines (2) are present in the pa ttern (A), replace the relevant ink tank.
88 Chapter 10 Routin e Maintena nce z A whi te stripe exists on any of th e printe d p atterns. (1) Select <Also B> and press [OK]. The cleaning confirma tion screen is displayed. (2) Select <Y es> and press [OK ] to st art FINE Cartridge Cleaning.
Chapter 10 89 Routin e Maint enance FIN E Ca rtri dge Clea ning If missing lines or white stripes are found in the print ed nozzle check pattern, proceed with a FINE Cartridge Cleaning to unc log the FINE Cart ridge Nozzles. Cleaning the FINE Cartridge Nozzles consume inks, so perform FINE Cartridge Cleaning only when necessary .
90 Chapter 10 Routin e Maintena nce FINE Cartridge Deep Cleaning If the print quality does not improve after a standard FINE Cartridge Cleaning, t ry FINE Cartridge Deep Cleaning, which is a more po werful cleaning process.
