Power ON / OFF 2 Power ON / OFF T urning the pr inter's pow er on and off is perf or med with the pow er s witch on the right side of the pr inter . Power ON / OFF 3 The indicators and display on the control panel will illuminate, and the printer will perfor m a self-diagnosis to check the status of the printer and options.

Online and Offline 5 Online and Offline " オンライン " is when the printer is capable of receiving data from a computer . " オフライン " is when connection with a computer is shut down and data cannot be receiv ed. Specify the printer to of fl ine bef ore operating a menu on the control panel.
Online and Offline 6 IMPOR T ANT • If printing is attempted from computer oper ation with the printer in of fl ine , a message such as < プリンタの準備ができていません > or < プリンタが接続されていません > will appear .
Paper 7 Paper Use only paper that is appropriate for obtaining the best machine perf ormance. Using inappropriate paper can lead to deter ioration in print quality or paper jams.

Paper 11 ■ En velopes Env elopes that can be used with this printer are Y ouk ei No .4 and Y oukei No .2 with the f ollowing structure. Place the envelopes with the side subject to printing the name and address f acing down in the multi purpose tra y .
Paper 12 . Printable Area The areas of paper shown belo w can be printed with this pr inter . ■ Plain paper / heavy paper / transparencies / label sheets Data cannot be printed inside the 5mm-border around the paper .
Paper 13 ■ En velopes Data cannot be printed inside the 10 mm-border around the env elope. Adjust the location f or printing according to your needs. . Paper that Cannot Be Used T o pre v ent malfunctions such as paper jams or printer malfunctions, do not use paper indicated below .
Paper 14 • P aper that ma y damage the printer . - Carbon paper . - P aper with staples , clips, ribbons , or tapes . - P aper that has been printed or copied on one side b y a copier or a different laser printer (the non-printed side is also disab led).
Printing from the Paper Cassette 15 Printing from the Paper Cassette F ollow the procedure described below to load paper into the paper cassette . IMPOR T ANT • Be sure to f ollow the instructions belo w to pre v ent paper jams . - Do not load paper other than plain paper (64-105 g/m 2 ) such as transparencies , label sheets, or en v elopes.
Printing from the Paper Cassette 16 - Do not touch the paper f eed roller or b lac k rubber part of the paper cassette. This caused a paper f eed f ailure . Loading standard size paper When loading paper in size of Legal, Letter , Executiv e, A4, B5, or A5 in the paper cassette, f ollo w the procedure described below .
Printing from the Paper Cassette 17 2 Pull out the paper cassette. Hold the handle on the front of the cassette to pull it out half way , then suppor t it with both hands as shown in the figure below to pull it all the way out. CA UTION When loading paper in the cassette, be sure that the cassette is removed from the printer .
Printing from the Paper Cassette 18 3 Push the plate to lock it. CA UTION If the plate is locked, do not touc h the white lock release le ver located on the right side of the paper cassette. The plate may snap b y for ce if the lock is release and result in personal injuries.
Printing from the Paper Cassette 19 4 Set the Standard / Custom selection s witch to "ST AND ARD ." IMPOR T ANT Be sure to set the Standard / Custom selection s witch to "ST AND ARD" in order to use standard siz e paper .
Printing from the Paper Cassette 20 6 Grasp the lock release le ver on the right side of the paper guide and slide it to the mark indicating the subject paper size . The left paper guide operates simultaneously with the right paper guide. IMPOR T ANT Be sure to chec k that the paper guide is adjusted to the position of the paper y ou want to load.
Printing from the Paper Cassette 21 IMPOR T ANT Double-f eeding ma y occur frequently if the edges of the stac ked paper are not aligned properly . In such a case , align the paper stac k on the fl at surf ace bef ore loading it.
Printing from the Paper Cassette 22 8 Press down on the stac k of paper as shown in the fi gure, con fi rm that the loading limit mark is not exceeded, then load the stack of paper under the paper holder s and hooks of the paper guide.
Printing from the Paper Cassette 23 • P aper in siz e of A5 can be loaded up to half the amount (16 mm of the maxim um capacity (500 sheets) belo w the loading limit mark) as sho wn in the fi gure .
Printing from the Paper Cassette 24 10 Attach the paper cassette to the printer . Hold the cassette securely with both hands and push it into the printer firmly until the front side of the cassette is flush with fr ont surface of the printer . If the printer is ON when the cassette is attached, you will hear the sound of printer operation.
Printing from the Paper Cassette 25 ● Indication of the amount of paper remaining in the cassette The paper cassette is suppor ted with an indicator that shows the amount of paper remaining in the cassette. If the cassette is full, the indicator will be at the top .

IMPOR T ANT Data cannot be printed in the 5 mm border around the paper .
Loading Paper in the Multi Purpose Tray 27 ● Closing the multi purpose tra y ❑ Remov e any paper left in the m ulti pur pose tra y bef ore closing the tra y . Keep the multi purpose tray closed when it is not being used. 2 Specify the width of the slide guides slightly wider than the paper width.

IMPOR T ANT • Be sure that transparencies and label sheets are f anned thoroughly . If they are not f anned thoroughly , they ma y o verlap when f ed into the printer and result in paper jams.

If there is too m uch space between the paper stac k and slide guides , or if the slide guides are set too tightly against the paper stac k, it ma y result in misf eeds or paper jams .

Loading Paper in the Multi Purpose Tray 35 3 Place the stack of en velopes on a fl at surface , press them with y our hands to eliminate any air poc kets, and press do wn the corners to crease and fl atten the en velopes. CA UTION Handle en velopes with caution and take care not to cut your hand on the edges of the en velopes.

IMPOR T ANT • Appro ximately 10 en velopes can be loaded in the m ulti pur pose tra y .

When a Paper Jam Occurs (Clearing Paper Jams) 39 • When removing jammed paper , take care not to allow the toner to come into contact with your hands or c lothing, as this will dirty your hands or c lothing. If they become dirty , wash them immediatel y with cold water .

Hold the handle on the front of the cassette to pull it out half way , then suppor t it with both hands as shown in the figure below to pull it all the way out. IMPOR T ANT • The paper cassette is hea vy , so hold it securely with both hands .

Hold the cassette securely with both hands and push it into the printer slowly until the front side of the cassette is flush with fr ont surface of the printer .

Replacing the Cartridge 53 NO TE The lif e span of the EP-85 cartridge is indicated below . The n umber of pages is based on printing a standard document (with a printing r atio of appro ximately 5% and print density adjusted to f actory default).
Replacing the Cartridge 54 . 1 Open the upper front co ver . Open the upper front cover by holding the handles on both sides with both hands until it stops. IMPOR T ANT P erf orm the follo wing procedure with the upper front co ver open. Be careful not to close the upper front co v er accidentally .
Replacing the Cartridge 55 3 Hold the handle and open the ETB unit. Open the ETB unit by pulling it slowly and firmly until it stops. IMPOR T ANT • Low er the ETB unit completely until it stops . • Do not place an y objects on the ETB unit or touch the tr ansf er belt on the ETB unit.
Replacing the Cartridge 56 4 Place the sheets of paper (A4 size paper is recommended) on the transfer belt as sho wn in the fi gure . IMPOR T ANT Be sure to co ver the tr ansf er belt with paper to protect the tr ansf er belt when installing or remo ving a car tridge.
Replacing the Cartridge 57 IMPOR T ANT The car tridges should be installed in the order of Blac k, Magenta, Y ellow , and Cyan from the top . Cyan Magenta Yellow Black.
Replacing the Cartridge 58 6 Remove a ne w cartridg e fr om the bo x, then remo ve it from the protective ba g. Cut the protective bag open with scissors, so as not to damage the cartridge. IMPOR T ANT • K eep the cartr idge in the bo x until it is ready to be installed.
Replacing the Cartridge 59 7 Remove the tape and pr otective co ver . Remove the protective cover along with the tape. IMPOR T ANT Do not throw a w ay the protectiv e cover .
Replacing the Cartridge 60 9 Place the cartridg e on a fl at surface and pull out the sealing tape (appro x. 19 3 / 4 " (50 cm) in length) slowl y while holding the cartridg e. Hook your finger on the tab of the sealing tape and pull it straight out.
Replacing the Cartridge 61 10 Lift the cartridg e with both hands and install it in the printer . Insert the car tridge into the slot attached with a label in an applicable color , then push it in until it stops a . Push it into the printer securely as shown in the figur e b .

Canceling Printing 64 Canceling Printing T o cancel printing currently being processed, f ollow the procedure described below to perf or m job cancel. Job cancel lets you cancel a job while data is being receiv ed or processed.
Canceling Printing 65 2 Press [ ジョブ キャンセル ]. The message <03 ジョブ キャンセル > appears on the display and the print data being processed is canceled. When pr ocessing takes time, such as when receiving data, the message on the display changes to <00 ジョブ スキップ >.
Checking Operations 66 Checking Operations This machine is equipped with a status print function that enables y ou to con fi rm the v alues speci fi ed in the printer menu. This function can be used when you w ant to check the oper ating status, etc.

When a Message Is Displayed 74 9F X カートリッジ ケイコク (X is Y , M, C, or K.) Cause: It is possible that there is a prob lem with the installed car tridge. Theref ore, the print quality cannot be guaranteed. Remedy: Replacing the toner car tridge with a new one is recommended.
