6 An Introduction to D VDs Y ou have pr obably heard of DVD disc s and they come in variou s types and in two size s - the more commo n 12 cm DVDs and 8 cm Mini DVDs. This camcorder us es 8 cm DVD-R discs (lik e the supplie d one) or DV D-RW di scs (commercial ly available ).

25 Prepar ations E Ste p 3: Using the W ireless Controller Inserting the Battery (Lithium Button Battery CR2025 ) 1. Press the tab in the direction of the arrow and pull out the battery holder . 2. Place th e lithium bu tton battery with the + side facing up.
26 Ste p 4: Adjusting the L CD Scr een Rot ating the LCD Panel Open the LCD panel 90 degrees. • Y ou can rotate the panel downward by 90 degrees. • Y ou can rotate the panel by 180 degr ees toward the lens (allowing the subject t o monitor the L CD screen while you use the viewfi nder).

Move the / switch to the (Movies) position . 3. Slide the O PEN swit ch fully in the direction of th e arrow and gently open the disc cover completely until it stop s.
32 Y ou will be ask ed to confirm the disc speci fication you se lected. Use t he multi select or to select ( ) [YES] and pres s ( ) to contin ue, or sele ct [NO] and pres s ( ) to return and sel ect a different disc specifi cation. A confirmation message will ap pear on the scr een.

34 About the Power Save mode: In or der to save p ower when t he camcorder is powered by a battery p ack, the ca mcorder will a utomatically sh ut off if left without an y operation s for 5 minute s ( 84). T o rest ore the powe r , slide the power switch towards MODE and re lease it, or move the power switc h to and back t o ON.
35 Basic Functions Recording E R ecording Still Images 1. Move the power switch to ON to set the camcorder in CAMERA mode ( 1 1). 2. Move the / switch to the (Still images) position. 3. If necessary , change the media for recording the still images using the procedure described in the next page ( 36).
36 Selecting the Media for the S till Images Y ou can rec ord still image s on the memory car d or the disc. The default medi a for still images is the memory c ard. As long as you do not change th e recording destination , still images wil l be record ed to the la st selected media.
37 Basic Functions Recording E Zooming The zoom is available when recording movies or still images. When recording mov ies ( ), in addition to th e 10x optical zoom you can al so use the 200x di gital zoom ( 80). 10x Optical Zoom Move the zoom lever toward W to zoom out (wid e- angle).

58 About the AF- Assist Lamp: While you pre ss the PHOTO button ha lfway , if the subjec t is too dark th e assist lamp may ligh t up briefly in order to ena ble the camcor der to focu s more accurately (AF-assis t lamp). Y ou can also set [AF AST LAMP] to [OFF] so the assist lamp does not li ght up.

69 Advanced Features Changing the FUNC. Settings E Creating P anoramic Ima ges Y ou can shoo t a series of ov erlapping imag es and merge the m on a computer i nto one large panoramic i mage using the s upplied softwar e (PhotoStitch).

Repeat this step until you complete the p anoramic image. • Try to include a distinc tive item (l andmark, etc. ) in the overla pping port ion. Minor discrepancies in the overlapp ing area can be corrected wit h the software.

81 Advanced Features Changing the MENU Settings E IMG ST AB : The image sta bilizer compen sates for c amcorder shak e even at full telephoto. The image stabil izer is designe d to compensat e for a normal deg ree of camcord er shake. The image stabil izer may not be e ffective when record ing in dark pl aces using the Night modes.

86 Deleting Scenes Y ou can delet e those scenes th at you are not intere sted in keepin g. Remember that when you delete sce nes in the pla ylist, you d o not affect your ori ginal reco rdings; Howev er , when you delet e an original recording, it will be deleted also from the pl aylist.

88 Dividing a Scene Y ou can div ide your recor dings in order to leave only the best parts and later cut ou t the rest. Remember th at when you divide sce nes in the playlist, yo u do not aff ect your original recordings . Photomovie s cenes and scene s created by converting sin gle still imag es cannot be divided.
89 Editing Functions Disc Options (DVD-RW in VR mode only) E Protecting the Disc Y ou can pro tect the whol e disc in order to prevent the ac cidental erasur e of important recordin gs. Available only with DVD-RW discs recorded in VR mode. Initializ ing the dis c ( 90) will permane ntly erase all recordin gs, even if t he disc is protecte d.
90 Initializing the Disc Y ou need to ini tialize a DVD- RW disc when first i nserting it int o the camcorde r and you may have t o initialize a disc if yo u get the “DI SC ERROR” me ssage. Y ou ca n also choos e to initializ e the disc if you wi sh to erase al l the recording s on the disc or in or der to change the disc speci fication.
91 Editing Functions Disc Options (DVD-RW in VR mode only) E Changing the Disc Title Before you fi nalize your d isc, you can gi ve it a title. The disc titl e will be displa yed on the index screen when playing t he finalized di sc in most DVD pla yers.
92 Stil l Image Option s Erasing Still Ima ges Y ou can era se still images recorded on the memory card or on t he disc (DVD-RW only), one at a time or al l at once. Be careful when eras ing images . Erased i mages canno t be reco vered. Protected images on the memor y card and image s on a protecte d disc cannot be erased.

94 Copying Still Images Betw een the Disc and Memor y Card Y ou can copy still image s recorded on th e memory card to t he disc (for exam ple, to add them to a Phot omovie scene ( 95)), o r from the disc to the memor y card (for ex ample, to set print orders for a DPOF compa tible printe r ( 120)).
95 Editing Functions St ill Image Options E Con v er ting Still Ima ges into Photomo vie Scenes S till image s are record ed using JPEG co mpression, b ut a DVD player only recogniz es the MPEG standard.
96 Protecting Still Ima ges on the Memor y Card Y ou can pro tect still ima ges recorded o n the memory card from accidental eras ure while displaying a single image or from the inde x screen. Initializing the memory card ( 97) will perman ently erase a ll recorded still images, e ven the protec ted ones.
97 Editing Functions St ill Image Options E Initializing the Memor y Car d Initialize a new memory card whe n first inse rting it into the camcorder. Y ou may have to initialize a card if you get the “CARD ERROR” message or you may choose to d o so to erase all data recorde d on it.
