BRIM-A6 User’ s Guide P age B-1 APPENDIX B A TM OVER VIEW This Appendix covers basic Asynchronous T ransfer Mode (A TM) network operation and concepts that are critical to A TM network design and installation.
Appendix B: A TM Overview P age B-2 BRIM-A6 User’ s Guide B.2 THE A TM CELL One major dif ference between A TM and current transmission methods is that instead of using v ariable-length packets, A TM transmits fixed-size cells. (See Figure B-1.) Figure B-1 A TM Cells A TM uses three types of cells – Assigned, Unassigned, and Idle.
The A TM Cell BRIM-A6 User’ s Guide P age B-3 Figure B-2 A TM Header Field Breakdown The Header field is made up of se veral sub-fields which pro vide management/control information relating to a cell.
Appendix B: A TM Overview P age B-4 BRIM-A6 User’ s Guide B.3 THE A TM NETWORK A TM is a connection-oriented transmission technology . This means that no information transfers prior to establishing connection between de vices.
A TM Protocol BRIM-A6 User’ s Guide P age B-5 B.3.2 P ERMANENT AND SWITCHED VIRTUAL CHANNELS A TM networks use tw o dif ferent types of V irtual Channels – Permanent V irtual Channels (PVCs) or Switched V irtual Channels (SVCs). The dif ference between PVCs and SVCs exists in the channel set-up.
Appendix B: A TM Overview P age B-6 BRIM-A6 User’ s Guide When a message is sent out by a user: • It passes from the highest layer in the model, the Applications Layer, do wn to the lo west layer , the Physical Layer . • The Physical Layer physically transmits the message ov er a particular media.
A TM Protocol BRIM-A6 User’ s Guide P age B-7 A TM pro vides the function of the first three layers of the OSI model, but performs all the information routing (cell switching) in only the Physical and Data Link Layer . Performing the information routing functions in the Physical and Data Link layers essentially bypasses the Network Layer .
Appendix B: A TM Overview P age B-8 BRIM-A6 User’ s Guide Lay er 3: The A TM Adaptation Layer vs. The Network Lay er Even though these tw o layers hav e the same “physical” location in their perspecti ve models, the y are not alike.
