Chapter 2 14 Envelopes 2 Most envelopes wi l l be s uitable for your machine. However, some e nvelopes will have feed and print-quality pro bl em s becau s e of the way they have be en made. A suitable envelope s houl d have edge s with straight, well-creased folds and the le adi ng edge s hould not be t h icker than t wo pieces of paper.

Chapter 2 16 Labels 2 The ma c hi ne wil l print on most ty pes of labels designed for u s e with a laser machine. L abels should hav e an adhesive that is acr y lic-based since this material is more stable at the h igh temperatu r e s in the fuser unit.

Chapter 2 20 Loading docum ents 2 You can send a fax, m a ke copi es, and scan from the ADF (aut omatic do c u ment feeder) and f rom the sc anner glas s . Using t he ADF (aut o ma t ic doc ume nt fe eder ) 2 The A DF can h old up to 50 pages and feeds each sheet individu al ly.
Loading pap er and documents 21 2 Us ing the scan ner glas s 2 You can use the scanner glass to fax, scan, or copy the pages of a bo ok or one pa ge at a time. Docum ents can be up t o 8.5 inches wide and up to 14 inches long (215.9 mm wide to 355.6 mm long).
22 3 Mo de ti mer 3 The m achine has three mode key s on the control panel: Fax , Sc an , an d Copy . You can set how much time the ma c h ine takes af t er the last Copy o r S c an operation to return to Fax mode. If you choose Off , the machine will stay i n the mode you used last.
General setup 23 3 Paper s ize 3 You can use n ine sizes of paper f or printing copies : A 4, Letter, Legal, Executive, A5, A6, B5, B 6 and F o lio, and f our sizes for p rinting faxes: A4, Letter, Legal or Folio (8" × 13").
Chapter 3 24 Tr ay use i n fax m ode 3 You can change the def ault t r ay t ha t t he machine will use for pri nt i ng received fax es. When y ou choose Tray#1 Only , MP Only or Tray#2 Only 1 , the machine pulls the paper onl y from that t r a y. If the selected tray is out of paper, No Paper will appear on t he LCD.
General setup 25 3 Volume se ttings 3 Ring volume 3 You can choos e a ring v olume le v el from a range o f settings, f rom High to Off . W hi le in Fax mode pres s or t o adjust the volume l evel. The L CD shows th e current s etting, a nd each key press will chan ge t he v ol ume to the nex t level.

28 4 Security 4 You can set up your machine with multiple levels of security u s i ng Setting Lock and Sec ure Fun ction Lock. Y ou will no t b e ab le to continue to sched ule Delayed Fa xes. Howeve r , any presched uled Delayed Faxes will be sen t even if you turn on Secure Functi on Lock, so they won’t be lost.

Chapter 4 30 Sett ing the pa sswo rd for th e administrator 4 The pa ssword you set in these st eps is for the admin i strator. This password is used to set up users and to turn Secure Function Lock on or off. (See Se t t i ng up res t rict ed users on p age 31 a nd Turning Secure Functi on Lock on on page 31.

Sending a fa x 39 5 Contras t 5 For m ost do c u ments the default setting of Auto will giv e the best results. It automat ically chooses the suitable contrast for your document. If your document is very light or dark, chan gi ng the contrast m ay improve the quality of the f ax.
Chapter 5 40 Color Standard: Suitable for most t yped docum ents. Fine: Use wh en the document is a photograph. The transm i ssion time is slower than Standard res ol ut i on. If you c h oose S.Fine or Photo and th en use the Color Start key to send a fax , t he machine will send t he fax using the Fin e setting.
Sending a fa x 41 5 Ov er sea s mod e 5 If you are having difficulty sending a fax overseas due t o a bad connec tion, then turnin g on the overseas mode may hel p. This is a temporary setting, and will only be active for your next fax. a Make s ure you are in Fax m ode .
Chapter 5 42 Ch ecking and can celin g wait ing job s 5 Check which jobs are still waiting i n the mem ory to be s ent. If th ere are no j ob s, the LCD will show No Jobs Waiting . You can cancel a fax job that is stored and waiti n g in the memory. a Pre ss Me nu , 2 , 6 .
43 6 6 Choose the correct Rece ive Mode 6 The corre c t Receive mode is determ i ned by the ex t e rnal devices and telephone subsc r i ber services (Voicemail, Distinctive R ing, etc.) you have (or will be using) on the same line as t h e Brother m achine.
Chapter 6 44 Using receive modes 6 Some rec eive modes answer automatically ( Fax Only and Fax/Tel ) . You may want t o chang e the ring delay before using the s e modes. (See Ring delay on page 45.) Fax Only 6 Fax Only m od e wi ll automatically answe r every call as a f a x.

Chapter 7 54 Two-line t elephone s y s t e m 7 A two-lin e tel ephone syst em is nothing m ore than two s eparate telephone num bers on the same wal l outlet. The t wo telephone numbers can be o n separate jacks (RJ11) o r combined into one jack (RJ14).

Th ere are tw o wa y s to add a two-line t elephone to the machi ne’s wall outlet. You can plug the telephone line cord from the two-line telephone into the L1+L2 jack of t he t r i p lex adapter.

64 9 Remo te fax opti ons A RE NOT availab l e fo r colo r f a x. Remote fax options let you receive faxes while you are away from the machine. You can use on l y one rem ote f ax option at a time. Fax forw arding 9 The fax forwarding feature lets you automat ical ly forward your received faxes t o another mac hi ne.
Remote fax opt ions ( black & white only) 65 9 Paging 9 W hen P a ging is c h osen, your machine dials the pager number yo u’ ve programmed , and then dials your Personal Identification Number (PI N). Thi s act ivate s your p ag er so you will know that you have a f ax m essage in the m em o ry.

Chapter 9 68 Remote retrie val 9 The rem ot e ret rieval feature lets you retrieve your st ored fax messages when y o u are not at the machine. Y ou can call your m achine from any touch tone telephon e or fax machine, t hen use the Re mote Access Code to retrieve your mess ages.

71 10 10 Pol l ing l et s you set up y o ur machine so other people can rec ei ve faxes from you, but they pay for the call . It al so lets you call s om ebody else’s f ax machi ne and r e c eive a fax fr om it, so you pay for the call. The polling f e ature needs to be set up o n both machines f or this to wo r k.

73 11 11 Fax reports 11 Some fax reports (transmission verification and f ax journal) can be printed autom atically and m anually. Tr ansmis sion verif icatio n repor t 11 You can u se the transmission report a s p roof that you sent a fax.
