1-6 ❏ Environment-F riendly Econom y Printing M ode This feature will cut your printing cost by saving toner. It is useful to obtain draft copies for proof-reading. You can select from t wo economy modes—25% t oner saving and 50% t oner saving—through the Windows pri nter driver supplied wi th your printer.

USER’S GU IDE 2-2 Remarks It is recommended that you t est paper, especi ally special s izes and types of paper and heavy paper, on this printer before purchas ing large quantities. Avoid using coated paper, s uch as vinyl coated paper. Avoid using prepri nted or highly text ured paper.
CHAPTER 2 PAPER HAN DLIN G 2-3 Special Paper Before using paper wi th holes such as organi zer sheets, you must fan the stack well t o avoid paper jams and mis feeds. Do not use organizer sheet s that are stuck t ogether. The paste used mi ght cause damage to th e printer.

CHAPTER 2 PAPER HAN DLIN G 2-5 MULTI-PURPOSE SHEET FEEDER The printer has a m u lti-purpose sheet feed er that can feed plain p aper, envelopes, transparenci es and organizer paper. To use the multi-pu rpose sheet feeder, follo w these steps: 1. Make sure that you have sel ected the proper paper source, paper size, media type and orient ation.
USER’S GU IDE 2-6 Loading Paper into the Feeder To load paper into the feeder, follow these steps. 1 . Open the multi-p urpose sheet feeder b y gently p u llin g the lid forward towards you. ( ➀ ) 2 . Load paper in to the multi-pur p o se sheet feeder with the prin ting surface face down.

CHAPTER 2 PAPER HAN DLIN G 2-9 MANUAL FEED SLOT The multi-pur p ose sheet feeder also has a m anual feed slot. You can manually load paper sheet by s heet from this sl ot. You do not need to remove paper from th e m u lti-p urpose sheet feeder when u sing the manual feed slot.

CHAPTER 2 PAPER HAN DLIN G 2-11 OUTPUT TRAY AND PAPER SUPPORT WIRE The printer ejects paper with printed surfaces face down into the output tray at the front of the p rin ter. When the output tray is closed, the ejected paper comes out sheet by sheet through the slit at the front.

CHAPTER 3 CON TROL PAN EL 3-3 Switch This switch will be u sed for the following purpose de p e n d ing on the situation. Cancel printing If you press the switch during printing, the pri nter immediatel y stops printing and ejects the paper. Wake-up If the printer is in sleep m ode, pressing th e switch wakes it up in to the ready state.
USER’S GU IDE 3-4 Test Print Mode The printer h a s th e following test p rint mod e . Fo llow these steps: 1 . Make sure that the top cover is closed. 2 . Hold down the swi tch and turn on the power switch. Keep the switch d e p ressed until th e Drum lamp comes on.
CHAPTER 4 OPTIONS 4-1 CHAPTER 4 OPTIONS SERIAL INTERFACE BOARD RS-100 M (For HL-1040/1050 Only) To connect the printer to a DOS computer with a serial interface or to an Apple Macintosh computer, you need to install the optional serial interface board.

Select the RS-422A(Apple) or R S-232C(IBM) interface by changing the serial interface slide switch to the right for IB M(RS-232C) or to the left si de for Apple(RS-422A).
CHAPTER 4 OPTIONS 4-3 If necessary, set the serial interface parameters as follow: 1. Make sure that th e p rinter is in the off-lin e state. 2. Set the serial interface parameters by moving up (on) or down (off) the selectors of the dual in-line package (DIP) switch.

CHAPTER 4 OPTIONS 4-5 You can connect a parallel and a serial interface cable at the same time. The auto interface selection function allows you to share the printer with two computers. To do this, connect the parallel interface cable and then connect the serial interface cable as follows: 1.

Unpack the SIMM and hold it by i ts edge. ! Caution SIMM boards may be damaged by even a small amount of stati c electricity.
CHAPTER 4 OPTIONS 4-9 5. Install the main co ntroller board in to the printer b y sliding it into th e guide rails. 6. Secure the main co ntroller board with the four screws. 7. Reconnect the interface cable (printer cable) from your computer. Plug the pow er cord into the AC outlet and turn on the power switch.
CHAPTE R 5 MAI NTENANCE 5-1 CHAPTER 5 MAINTENANCE REPLACING THE TONER CARTRIDGE The printer can print approximat ely 2,400 pages (5% coverage: A4/Letter) wit h one toner cartridge. When the toner cart ridge is running low, the Alarm and Data (Toner) lamps blink once every 5 s econds to indicate toner low.
USER’S GU IDE 5-2 ! Caution Keep the dru m unit le vel after removing the ton er cartridge, to avoid possible toner spill or sca tter. Follow these steps to replace the toner cartridge: 1. Open the top cover towards you. R emove the drum unit by holding each side of the drum and gently lifting the drum forwards towards you.

Make sure that th e toner cartridge g u ide bar is exactly align ed with the guide sl ot in the drum unit and pus hed fully home into the drum unit to ensure that the toner cartridge and the drum unit fit together correctly.

CHAPTE R 5 MAI NTENANCE 5-7 REPLACING THE DRUM UNIT The printer uses a drum uni t to create the print i mages on paper. If the Drum lamp is on, it ind icates the drum un it is nearly at the end o f its life. We recommend you prepare a new drum unit to replace the current one.

CHAPTE R 5 MAI NTENANCE 5-15 RE-PACKING THE PRINTER ! Caution Whenever you transport t he printer, use the packing mat erials which are provided with your printer. Al so, follow the st eps below to re-pack the printer, or th e p r in ter may be dam ag ed which will vo id th e p rinter’s warranty.

Close the t op cover, the extension wire, and t he output tray. 6. Wrap the printer in the plastic bag and place it in the original carton box with the original S tyrofoam packing material.
CHAPTER 6 TROUBL ESHOOTIN G 6-1 CHAPTER 6 TROUBLESHOOTING ALARM INDICATIONS AT A GLANCE Operator Calls If a recoverable error occurs, the printer indicates an ‘operator call’ by blinking the Alarm la mp and any of the following lamps. Find the error and take t he proper action to correct it.
