iii DO NOT remove or damage the caution labels locat ed on or around the fuser. DO NOT use a vacuum cleaner to clea n up scattered toner . Doing this mi ght cause the toner dust to ignite inside t he vacuum cleaner, potential ly starti ng a fire.

1 1 What is in the box? When you unpack the printer , make sure that you have all of the following part s. Interf ace cable An interface cable is not a standard accessory. Buy the proper interf ace cable for the inter face you want to use (USB, parall el or network).

1. About t his Printer 4 Positioning the printer Read the following b efore y ou use t he print er. Power supply Use the printer within the recommended powe r range. The power cor d, incl uding extens ions, should be no longer than 5 met ers (1 6.5 feet) .
5 2 About pa per Type and size of paper The printer l oads paper from the install ed paper tray or the multi- purpose tray. The names for the paper trays in the pri nter driver and this guide are as follows: When looking at this pa ge on the CD-ROM, yo u can ju mp to the page for each printing method by clicking p in the table.
2. Printing Metho ds 6 1 Legal size paper is not available in some regions outside the USA and Canada. Recommended paper Before you buy a lot of paper, test a small quantity to make sur e that the paper is suit able. Use paper that is made for plain- paper copying.
2. Printing Metho ds 7 Types of envel opes Most envelop es will be suitabl e for y our pri nter. Howev er, s ome envelope s may have feed an d print quality problems due to t he way they have been made.
2. Printing Metho ds 8 Printable are a When using PCL ( standard driver) emulation, the edges of the pape r that can not be pri nted on are s hown in the tabl es below. Note When using BR-Script e mulation , the edges of the paper that cannot be pr inted o n are 4.

2. Printing Metho ds 10 b Pull the paper tray comple tely out of the printer. c While pressin g the blue paper-guide release lever, slide the paper guides to fit the paper size. Make sure that the guides are f irmly in the sl ots. For legal size pape r 1 , press i n the paper-g uide rel ease lever and pull out the back of the pa per tr ay.
2. Printing Metho ds 11 e Put the p aper tr ay fir mly back in the printe r. Make sur e that it i s complet ely inser ted in to the p rinter. f Lift up the sup port flap to pr event paper from sli ding off the fac e-down output tra y, or remove each page as soon as it comes out of the printer .

2. Printing Metho ds 13 b Open the MP tray and lower it gently. c Pull out the MP tray support fl ap (1). d Lift up the sup port flap to pr event paper from sli ding off the fac e-down output tra y, or remove each page as soon as it comes out of the printer .
2. Printing Metho ds 14 e Put paper in the MP tray. Make sure that the paper stay s under the maximum paper mark ( b ) on bo th sides of the tra y. f While pressi ng the paper-guide release l ever, slide th e paper guide to fit the paper size. g Send the print data to the printer.
2. Printing Metho ds 15 Printing on thick paper, labels and envel opes MP Tray mode is automatical ly turned on when paper is put in th e multi-purpos e tray. For the proper p aper to use , see About paper on page 5 and Types of envelopes on page 7. a Choose the f ollowing from the p rinte r driver : Paper Size .
2. Printing Metho ds 16 b Open the MP tray and lower it gently. c Pull out the MP tray support fl ap (1). d Lift up the sup port flap to pr event paper from sli ding off the fac e-down output tra y, or remove each page as soon as it comes out of the printer .
2. Printing Metho ds 17 e Put paper in t he MP tray. Make sure that t he paper s tays under the maxi mum paper mark ( b ) on both sides of the tra y. Note • Envelope joint s that are sealed by the manufac turer should be secur e. • The side to be printed on must be face up.
2. Printing Metho ds 18 Note • If the DL size doub le fl ap envelope is cr eased after pri nting, c hoose DL Long Edge in Paper Size , f rom the Basic tab. Put a new DL si ze double-f lap enve lope in the MP t ray with t he longe st edge o f the envelope in fir st, the n prin t agai n.

Printing Metho ds 19 Duplex Printi ng The supplied pri nter dr ivers for Windo ws ® 95/98/Me/200 0/XP and Windows NT ® 4.0, Mac OS ® 9.1 to 9.2 and Mac OS ® X 10.2.4 or greater all enable dupl ex printing. For more infor mation about how to choose the settings , see the Help text in the pri nter dri ver.
2. Printing Metho ds 20 Note • If you choose the Paper Sour ce to be Auto Select , put the printed even-number ed pages in the MP tray. • When you put pap er in the paper tray, f irst empty the t ray. Next, put the pri nted pages in the tray, wi th the printed side f ace up.
2. Printing Metho ds 21 Paper orientation for ma nual duplex printing The printer pr ints the second page fir st. If you print 10 pages on 5 sheets of paper, it will print page 2 and then page 1 on t he first sheet of paper. I t will print page 4 and then page 3 on the second sheet of paper.
2. Printing Metho ds 22 Automatic dupl ex printing (For HL-5250DN) Note • The screens in t his section are from Windows ® XP. The screens on your PC may var y depending on your operating syst em. • Use A4, Letter or Legal si ze paper when you use the automatic duplex pri nting functi on.

3. Dri ver and Sof tware 28 Toner Save Mode You can save running costs by tur ning on the Toner Save Mode , which reduces the print density. Note • We do not recommend Toner Save for printing Photo or Gray Sca le images. • Toner Save Mode is not available f or 1200 dpi or HQ 1200 reso lution .

3. Dri ver and Sof tware 30 Job Spooling The printer keeps the last print j ob sent to it in memory. To reprint the last document, pres s Go and hold i t down fo r about 4 seconds unti l all the LEDs light up i n order ( Toner , Drum , Paper , Status ), and then release Go .
3. Dri ver and Sof tware 31 Administrator (For Windows ® 95/98/ Me only) Administra tors have the auth ority to limit the number of copies, scaling setting and water mark setting functions . • Password Enter the password int o this box. • Set Password Click here to change the password.

Dri ver and Sof tware 38 Print Sett ings You can change settings by choos ing the setting in the Print Settings list: Basic tab Resolution You can change the resoluti on as follows: • 3 00 dpi • 6 00 dpi • HQ 1200 • 1 200 dpi Note If you use the high quality 1200 dpi setting (1200 × 1200 dpi) the print speed will be slower .
3. Dri ver and Sof tware 39 Advanced tab Prin t Qua lity You can change the print qual ity as follows: • Brother Phot o This is a photograph mode (gradati on priorit y). Choose this setting for printing phot ographs that have continuous gradat ion.
3. Dri ver and Sof tware 40 Uninstalling the printer driver You can uninstall the pri nter driver that you install ed with the foll owing steps. Note • This is not avail able if you instal led the printer driver from the Windows Add a printer function.
3. Dri ver and Sof tware 41 Brother Laser driver for Mac intosh ® For Mac OS ® X 10.2.4 or greater a Disconnect the USB cable between the Macintosh and your printer .
3. Dri ver and Sof tware 42 Software Software for networks (For HL-5250DN only) BRAdmin Professional (For Windows ® ) The BRAdmin Professional is a uti lity for managing your Brothe r network enabled pri nters that are run ning under Windows ® 95/9 8/Me/2000/XP and Windows NT ® 4.
3. Dri ver and Sof tware 43 About emulatio n modes This printe r has the followi ng emulation modes. You can change the setti ng using Remote Printer Console or a Web browser.
3. Dri ver and Sof tware 44 Automatic interface selection This print er has an automati c inter face selecti on feature t hat is turned on by default . This let s it automat ically change the i nterface to IEEE 12 84 parallel , USB, or Ethernet depending on which interf ace is receivin g data.
45 4 LEDs (Ligh t Emitting Diod es) This secti on ref ers to the fo ur LEDs Toner , Drum , Paper and Status , and two button s Go and Job Cance l on the control panel . The LED indications shown in the ta ble below are used in the illus trations i n this chapter.
4. Co ntro l Pane l 46 LED Printer status Sleep mode The po wer switch is off or the prin ter is in s leep mode . Pressin g Go wake s up th e printer from sle ep mode to ready mode. Ready to print The pri nter is re ady to print . Warming up The pri nter is war ming up.
4. Co ntro l Pane l 47 Data remaining in me mory There i s remainin g print d ata in the p rinter mem ory. If th e yellow St atus LED i s on for a l ong time a nd nothing has printed , press Go to print t he remainin g data in memor y. Toner low Indica tes that the toner cartridge is nearly empty .

4. Co ntro l Pane l 49 Service call indic ations If there is an erro r that cannot be cleared by the user , the printer will show that a service cal l is needed by lighting up all t he LEDs as shown bel ow.
4. Co ntro l Pane l 50 For example, the LED i ndication bel ow shows a fuser uni t fail ure. Make a note of the indicat ion and report the err or status to your dealer or a Brother authori zed service representat ive by r eferr ing to t he above table.
4. Co ntro l Pane l 51 Control panel b uttons The control panel buttons have the followin g functions: Cancel print ing If you press Job Cancel while printing, the pri nter will immediat ely stop print ing and will then eject th e paper.
4. Co ntro l Pane l 52 Print a test page You can use the Go button or t he pri nter dri ver to print a test page. Using control panel button a Turn off the pri nter. b Make sure that the front cover is closed and the power cord is plugged in . c Hold down Go as you tu rn on the po wer switch.
4. Co ntro l Pane l 53 Print a Printer Settings page You can print the curr ent settings using the control panel button or print er driver. Using the control panel button a Make sure that the front cover is closed and the power cord is plugged in . b Turn on t he prin ter and wai t until the printer is in the r eady sta te.
4. Co ntro l Pane l 54 Print Fonts You can print a list o f the internal font s using the control panel button or print er driver. Using the control panel button a Turn off the pri nter. b Make sure that the front cover is closed and the power cord is plugged in .
4. Co ntro l Pane l 55 Network default setting (For HL-5250DN) If you want to reset t he print server back to its default s ettin gs (resett ing a ll info rmation su ch as t he password and IP address infor mation), fol low these steps: a Turn off the pri nter.
56 5 This printer has t he following optional ac cessories. You can incr ease the capabiliti es of the p rinter with these items . Lower tray unit (LT -5300) Two optional lower trays (Tray 2 or Tray 3) can be instal led, and each lower tray can hold up to 250 sheet s of 80 g/ m 2 (21 lb) paper.
5. Optio ns 57 DIMM For HL-5240 The HL-5240 pr inter ha s 16 MB of standard memory and one slot f or opti onal memory expan sion. You can expand the memory up t o 528 MB b y instal ling dual in-li ne memory modu les (DIMMs). For HL-5250DN The HL-5250DN pr inter has 32 MB of standard memory and one slot f or option al memory expansion.
5. Optio ns 58 Insta llin g extra mem ory a Turn off the pri nter power switch, and then unplug the printer. Disconnect the interface cable fro m the printer . Note Be sure to turn off the printer power s witch b efore you i nstall or remove the DIMM.
5. Optio ns 59 e Put the DIMM cover back on. f Reconnect the i nterface ca ble to your printer . Plug the print er back in, and then turn on the power switch. Note To make sure that you have ins talled the DIMM prope rly, you can pri nt the print er settings page that sho w s the current memor y size.
5. Optio ns 60 Print server (NC-2 100p) (For HL -5240) An optional networ k print server (NC-2100p) allows y ou to connect to your network through the par allel interf ace. Note HL-5250DN alre ady has a built- in 10/100BASE-TX Ethernet Pr int Server .
61 6 You will need to r eplace cert ain parts and cl ean the pr inter r egularly. WARNING When you replace certain part s or clean the insi de of the printer, remember the foll owing: • If your clothes are smear ed with toner, wipe off t he toner with a dry clot h and immediately wash the clothes in cold wat er to avoid st ains.

Ro utine Maint enanc e 62 Toner cartridge A new toner cartridge can prin t approximately 3,500 ( standard car tridge) or approxi mately 7,000 (high yield cartridge) A4 or Lett er size singl e-sided pages at 5% coverage. Note • The amount of toner used vari es according to what is print ed on t he page and t he pri nt densit y setti ng.
6. Ro utine Maint enanc e 63 Replacing the toner cartridge Note • To ensure hi gh qualit y printi ng, we recommend that you use only g enuine Brother toner car tridges. When you want to buy toner cartridges, call the deal er you bought the pri nter from o r Brother Customer Servi ce.
6. Ro utine Maint enanc e 64 c Push down the blue lock lever and take the t oner cartridge out of the dr um unit. CAUTION DO NOT put a toner cartridge in to a fire. It could explode, resulting in injuries. Handle the to ner cart ridge caref ully. If toner scatt ers on your hands or clothes, wipe or wash it off wi th cold water at once.
6. Ro utine Maint enanc e 65 CAUTION Wait to unpack the toner cart ridge until immediately befor e you put it in the prin ter. If toner cartridges ar e left unpacked for a long time the toner li fe will be shortened. If an unpacked drum unit is put in direct sunli ght or room light, the unit may be damaged.
6. Ro utine Maint enanc e 66 e Pull off the protec tive cover. f Put the n ew toner cartridge f irmly i nto the drum unit until you hear it lock into place. I f you put it in properly, the loc k leve r will lift aut omatically. CAUTION Make sure t hat you put in the toner cartridge properly or it may separate from the drum uni t.

6. Ro utine Maint enanc e 68 Drum unit A new drum unit can print approximat ely 25,000 A4 or Letter size si ngle-sided pages at 5% coverage. Note • There are many factors that determine the actual drum life, such as the temperat ure, humidit y, type of paper, type of toner used, number of pages per print job and so on.
6. Ro utine Maint enanc e 69 When you replace the drum unit with a new one, you need to reset the drum counter by compl eting the followi ng steps: a Make sure that the print er is turned on and the Drum LED is blinki ng. Press the fr ont cover releas e button and then ope n the front cover .
6. Ro utine Maint enanc e 70 CAUTION We recommend that you put the drum unit and to ner cartri dge assembly on a piece of disposable paper or cloth in case you accident ally spill or scatter to ner. To prevent damage to the pri nter from static ele ctricity, DO NOT touch the electrodes shown in the illus tration.
6. Ro utine Maint enanc e 71 e Unpack the new drum unit . CAUTION Wait to unpack a drum unit until immediately befor e you put it in the prin ter. Exposure to di rect sunlight or room lig ht may da mage the drum un it. f Put the toner car tridge firml y into the new drum unit unt il you hear it loc k into place.
6. Ro utine Maint enanc e 72 Replacing periodic maintenanc e parts You need to replace the peri odic maintenance parts reg ularly to maintain print qual ity. You should repl ace the part s liste d below after pr inting t he foll owing number of pages.
6. Ro utine Maint enanc e 73 Cleani ng Clean the outside and inside of the printer reg ularly wit h a dry, lint-f ree cloth. When you replace the toner cartridge or the d rum unit, make sur e that you clean the inside of the pr inter. If print ed pages are stained with toner, c lean the i nside of the pri nter wit h a dry , lint -free cl oth.
6. Ro utine Maint enanc e 74 c Wipe the outside of th e printer with a dry, lint-f ree cloth to remove dust. d Remove anything that i s stuck inside the paper tr ay. e Wipe the inside of th e paper tray with a dry, l int-fre e cloth to remove dust. f Put the paper tray back i n the printer.
6. Ro utine Maint enanc e 75 b Press the front cover release but ton and then open t he fr ont cove r. c Take out t he drum unit and t oner cart ridge assembly. HOT SURFACE After y ou have j ust used t he pri nter, s om e in ternal p arts of the pr inter will b e extr emely hot.
6. Ro utine Maint enanc e 76 To prevent damage to the pri nter from static ele ctricity, DO NOT touch the electrodes shown in the illus tration. d Wipe the s canner window wi th a dr y, li nt-free cloth. e Put the d rum unit an d toner cartridge assembly back in th e printer.
6. Ro utine Maint enanc e 77 Cleaning the cor ona wire If you have print quali ty problems, clean the cor ona wire as follows: a Press the front cover release but ton and then open t he fr ont cove r. b Take out t he drum unit and t oner cart ridge assembly.
6. Ro utine Maint enanc e 78 c Clean the p rimary cor ona wire i nside the dr um unit by gently sl iding the blue tab from right to left and left to rig ht sever al times. CAUTION Be sure to ret urn the tab t o the home posi tion ( a ) (1) . If you do not, pr inted pa ges may have a vertical stripe.

7. Troub leshooti ng 80 Error me ssages in the Sta tus Monitor The Status Monitor will report proble m s with the print er. Take the proper acti on by referring to the fol lowing table.
7. Troub leshooti ng 81 Dust On Drum See Cleaning the corona wire on page 7 7. Memory Full Press Go t o print th e remain ing data i n the pri nter memo ry. Cancel the print job if yo u want to delete the rem aining d ata in th e print er memor y.
7. Troub leshooti ng 82 Error me ssage printout The printer can al so report proble ms by printing an error message. Use the table below to identif y and clear the erro r message. Error mes sage Action MEMO RY F ULL Press Go t o print th e remain ing data i n the pri nter memo ry.
7. Troub leshooti ng 83 Paper ha ndling First, make sure that you are using paper that meets Brother recommended paper specificati ons. See About paper on page 5. Problem Recommendation The prin ter does not feed paper. If the re is paper in the p aper tray, m ake sure it i s straigh t.
7. Troub leshooti ng 84 Paper jams and how to clear them If a paper jam occurs, the printer wil l flash the Paper LED as shown below. HOT SURFACE After you have j ust used the pri nter, some int ernal parts of the pr inter will be extremely hot .
7. Troub leshooti ng 85 a Press the cover rel ease button and then open the fron t cover. b Slowly t ake out the drum uni t and to ner cartridge assembly .
7. Troub leshooti ng 86 c Pull the paper tray comple tely out of the printer. d Close the front cover. e Pull the jammed paper up and out of the print er.
7. Troub leshooti ng 87 g Open the back cover. h Pull the tab s at the left and right hand s ides toward you t o open the f user c over (1). i Using both hands, gentl y pull the jammed paper out of the fuser unit.
7. Troub leshooti ng 88 HOT SURFACE After y ou have j ust used t he pri nter, s om e in ternal p arts of the pr inter will b e extr emely hot. W ait f or th e printer to cool down before you touch the int ernal parts of the printer. j Fully c lose the b ack cover.
7. Troub leshooti ng 89 m Push down the b lue lo ck lever and take the t oner cartr idge out of t he drum unit . Clear t he jammed paper if there is any inside the drum unit. CAUTION Handle the to ner cart ridge caref ully. If toner scatt ers on your hands or clothes, wipe or wash it off wi th cold water at once.
