ABOUT THIS PRINTER 1 - 5 What kind of paper can I use? Type and size of paper The printer loads paper fr om the installed paper tr ay, manual feed tray o r optional lower tray unit.
1 - 6 ABOUT THIS PRINTER Recommended paper ■ Before you buy a lot of paper, plea se test some to make sure that the paper is suitable. ■ Use paper that is made for plain -paper copying. ■ Use paper that is 75 to 90 g/m 2 (20 to 24 lb). ■ Use neutral paper.

ABOUT THIS PRINTER 1 - 9 2 Pull the paper tray completely out of t he printer. Figure 1-5 3 While pressing the blue p aper-guide release lever, slide the paper guide s to fit the paper size.
1 - 10 ABOUT THIS PRINTER 4 Put paper in the tray. Check that t he paper is flat in the tray at all four corners. Figure 1-7 5 Put the paper tray firmly back in the printer. Ch eck that it is inserted fully into the printer. Do not put more than 250 sh eets of paper (75 g/m 2 ) in the tray, or paper jams may occur.

ABOUT THIS PRINTER 1 - 17 Printing on thicker paper and card stock When the back output tray is pulled down, the printer has a straight paper path from the manual feed tray or the MP tray through to the back of the printer. Use this paper feed and ou tput method when you want to print on thicker paper or card stock.

ABOUT THIS PRINTER 1 - 43 Printing on both sides of th e paper (manual duplex printing) The supplied PCL printer drivers for Windows ® 95/98/ Me, Windows NT ® 4.0, Windows ® 2000/XP, Mac ® OS 8.6 to 9.2 and Mac ® OS X 10.1 or lat er all enable manual duplex printing.
1 - 44 ABOUT THIS PRINTER Manual duplex printing from the manual feed tray (For HL-5030 and HL-5040) Caution ■ Before you put the sheets back in the ma nual feed tr ay, you will have to stra ighten them, or you may get paper jams. ■ You should not use very thin or very thick paper.
ABOUT THIS PRINTER 1 - 45 Manual duplex printing from the mult i-purpose tray (For HL-5050 and HL-5070N) Caution ■ Before putting the sheets back in the MP tray, you will have to straighten them, or you may g et paper jams. ■ You should not use very thin or very thick paper.
1 - 46 ABOUT THIS PRINTER Guidelines for printing on both sides of the paper ■ If the paper is thin, it may wrin kle. ■ If paper is curled, straighten it and then p ut it back in the paper tray. ■ You should use regular paper. Do not use bond p aper.
ABOUT THIS PRINTER 1 - 47 Paper orientation for prin ting on both sides of the paper The printer prints the second page first. If you print 10 pages on 5 sheets of paper, it will pr int page 2 then page 1 on the f irst sheet of paper. It will print page 4 then p age 3 on the second sheet of pape r.
2 - 1 DRIVER AND SOFTWARE 2 Printer driver A printer driver is software that translates data from the format used by a computer to the format that a particular printer needs. Typically, this format is a printer command language or pag e description language.
DRIVER AND SOFTWARE 2 - 2 For Windows ® Features in the PCL printer driver You can download the latest printer driver o r get other information by acce ssing the Brother Solutions Center at http://solutions.brother.com You can also change settings by clickin g the illustration on the left side of the Basic tab in the Properties dialog box.

DRIVER AND SOFTWARE 2 - 6 Job Spooling The printer saves data that you want reprin ted. You can reprint a document without sending the data again from your PC. To reprint press and hold down the Go button until all four LEDs are lit an d then release the Go button.
2 - 7 DRIVER AND SOFTWARE Page Protection ‘Page Protection’ refers to a setting that reserves additional memory for the cr eation of full page images.

2 - 17 DRIVER AND SOFTWARE Software Software for Networks BRAdmin Professional The BRAdmin Professional software is a utility for managing your Brother network enabled printe rs that are running under Windows ® 95/98/Me , Windows NT ® 4.0 and Windows ® 2000/XP.
DRIVER AND SOFTWARE 2 - 18 Automatic Emulation Selection This printer has an Automatic Emulation Sele ction feature. When the p rinter receives data from the computer, it automatically chooses the emulation mo d e. This feature has been set at the factory to ON.
CONTROL PANEL 3 - 1 3 This section refers to the four Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) ( Toner , Drum , Paper , Status ) and the two control panel buttons ( Job Cancel , Go ) on the control panel. Figure 3-1 The LED indications shown in t he table below are used in the illustrations in this chapter.
3 - 2 CONTROL PANEL LED Printer status Figure 3-2 Sleep mode The power switch is off or the pr inter is in Sleep mode. Pressing the Go butt on wakes up the printer f ro m Sleep mode to Ready mode. 3 - 4 CONTROL PANEL Figure 3-10 Paper jam Clear the paper jam . See Paper jams and h ow to clear t hem in Chapter 6 . If the printer does not st art printing, press the Go button. No paper Put paper in the printer. See Printing on plain pape r in Chapter 1.
CONTROL PANEL 3 - 5 Service call indications If there is an error that cannot be put right, the printe r will show that a service call is needed by lighting up all the LEDs as shown in Figure 3-12.
3 - 6 CONTROL PANEL Table 1: LED indications after pressing Go and Job Cancel Make a note of the indication a nd report the error status to you r dealer or a Brother authorized service representative by referring to the above table.
CONTROL PANEL 3 - 7 Control panel buttons The control panel buttons ha ve the following functions: Cancel printing If you press the Jo b Cancel button while printing, the printer will immediately stop printing and will then eject the paper.
3 - 8 CONTROL PANEL Print a test page You can use the Go button or the printer driver to print a test page. Using control panel button 1 Turn off the printer. 2 Make sure that the front cover is closed and the power cord is plugged in. 3 Hold down the Go button as you turn on the power switch.
CONTROL PANEL 3 - 9 Printer Settings You can print the current settings usin g the control panel button or printe r driver. Using the control panel button 1 Make sure that the front cover is closed and the power cord is plugged in. 2 Turn on the printer and wait until the printer is in Ready stat e.
3 - 10 CONTROL PANEL Print fonts (For HL- 5040, HL-5050 and HL-5070N) You can print a list of the in ternal fonts using the control panel button or printer driver. Using the control panel button 1 Turn off the printer. 2 Make sure that the front cover is closed and the power cord is plugged in.
CONTROL PANEL 3 - 11 Network factory default setting (For HL-5070N) If you wish to reset the print server back to its def ault factory settings ( resetting all information such as the password and IP address informat ion), please follow these steps: 1 Turn off the printer.
OPTIONS 4 - 1 4 This printer has the following o ption al accesso ries. You can increase the capabilit ies of the printer with these items. Click the symbol L in the table to see the information for each item. DIMM We recommend that you exp and the printer memory to avoid any memory f ull errors.
4 - 2 OPTIONS Installing additional memory 1 Turn off the printer power switch, an d then unplug the printer. Disconne ct the interface cable from the printer. Figure 4-1 Caution Make sure you turn the printer OFF before you install or remove the DIMM.
OPTIONS 4 - 3 4 Hold the DIMM with your fingers on th e side edges and your thumb on the back edge. Line up the notches on the DIMM with the DIMM slo t. (Ch eck that the locks on each side o f the DIMM slo t ar e open or facing outwards.) Figure 4-4 5 Press the DIMM straight into the slot (press firm ly).
4 - 4 OPTIONS Lower tray unit (LT-5000) (For HL-5040, HL-5050 and HL-5070N) The lower tray unit is a n optional device that can hold extra paper. It ca n hold a maximum of 250 sheets of paper (75 g/m 2 or 20 lb). Figure 4-5 If you want to buy an optional lower tray unit, call the dealer you bou ght the printer from.

ROUTINE MAINTENANCE 5 - 2 Toner cartridge A new toner cartridge contains enough t oner to print up to 3,300 (standard ca rtridge) or up to 6,500 (high yield cartridge) A4 or Letter-size sin gle-sided pages at about 5% coverage. Toner Low message The Toner LED alte rn ates turning on for 2 seconds and of f for 3 seconds.
5 - 3 ROUTINE MAINTENANCE Toner Empty message If the LED shows the message below, the printer has run out of tone r or the toner is not evenly distributed inside the cartridge. Figure 5-2 Replacing the toner cartridge 1 Press the cover release button and then open the front cover of th e printer.

5 - 5 ROUTINE MAINTENANCE 4 Unpack the new toner cartridge. Hold the cartridge level with both hands and gently rock it from side to side five or six times to spread the toner e venly inside the cartridge. Figure 5-7 Caution ■ Wait to unpack the toner cartridge until immediately before you put it in the printer.
ROUTINE MAINTENANCE 5 - 6 Caution Put the toner cartridge in the drum unit immed iatel y after you have removed the protective cover. Do not touch the shaded parts shown in Figure 5 -9 and Figure 5-10 to prevent any deg radation to the print quality. 6 Put the new toner cartridge firmly into the drum unit until you hear it lock into place.
5 - 7 ROUTINE MAINTENANCE 7 Clean the primary corona wire inside the drum unit by gently sliding the blue tab from right to left and left to right several times. Re turn the tab to the home position ( ▲ ) before you put the drum unit back in the printer.
ROUTINE MAINTENANCE 5 - 8 Drum unit This printer can print up to 20,000 pages * with one drum unit. * At 5% print coverage (A4 or L etter size). The actual number of prin ted pages will vary depending on the average type of print job and paper.
5 - 9 ROUTINE MAINTENANCE Replacing the drum unit Follow these steps to replace the dru m unit. You can also view the drum unit replacement method in the instructional video on the su pplied CD-ROM: 1 Press the cover release button and then open the front cover of th e printer.
ROUTINE MAINTENANCE 5 - 10 3 Push down the blue lock lever and take the to ner cartridge out of the drum un it assembly. Figure 5-18 Caution Handle the toner cartridge carefully. If toner scatters on your hands or clothe s, imme diate ly wip e or wash it off with cold water.

ROUTINE MAINTENANCE 5 - 12 Cleaning Clean the outside and insid e of the printer regularly with a dry soft cloth. When you replace th e toner cartridge or the drum unit, make sure yo u clean the inside of the printer. If printed pages are stained with toner, clean the inside of the printer with a dry soft cloth.
5 - 13 ROUTINE MAINTENANCE Replacing maintenance parts You need to replace the maintenance parts regu larly to maintain print quality. You sho uld replace the units listed below after printing the following number of pages. * The actual number of printed page s may vary dep ending on your average type of print job and paper.
TROUBLESHOOT ING 6 - 1 6 Identifying your problem First, check the following: ■ The power plug is connected prop erly and the printer is turned on. ■ All of the protective parts have been remo ved. ■ The toner cartridge and drum unit are in stalled properly.
6 - 2 TROUBLESHOOTING Error messages in the status monitor The Status Monitor will report problems with the prin ter. Take the corrective actions listed in the following table for the error messa ge that the Status Monitor reports. The default setting for the Status Monitor is off.
TROUBLESHOOT ING 6 - 3 Error message printouts The printer will report problems by printing an error me ssa ge as defined in the following table. Take the corrective actions for the error message. Error message Action MEMORY FULL ■ Press the Go button to pr int the data left in the printer.

TROUBLESHOOT ING 6 - 7 4 Pull out the drum unit assembly. Pull the jammed p aper up and out of the printer. If you canno t remove the drum unit asse mbly easily at this time, do not use extra force. Instead , pull the edge of the jammed paper from the paper tray.
6 - 8 TROUBLESHOOTING 5 Open the back output tray. Pu ll the jammed paper out of the fu ser unit. If the paper ja m can be cleared, go to Step 7.
