CHAPTE R 1 I NTRODUCTION 1-3 Three Interfaces This printer has a high speed bi-directional parallel interface, an RS -232C serial interface and a modular input/output (MIO) compatible interface. If your application software supports the bi-directional parallel interface, you can monitor the printer s tatus.

USER’S GU IDE 2–14 Connecting the Printer to Your Computer This printer has a bi-directional parallel interface and an RS-232C serial interface. They allow the printer to communicate with IBM/PC ® or compatible computers .

It h as two operation m o des: When you press the but tons, they work in the NORMAL mode as indicated above the butt ons. When you press t he buttons with the Shift button held down, they work in the S HIFT mode as indicat ed below the buttons.

USER’S GU IDE 3–12 Before loading en velopes in th e cassette, ch eck the following: • Envelopes shoul d have a lengthwise seal ing flap. • The sealing flaps should be crispl y and correctly folded (irregularly cut or folded envelopes may caus e paper jams).

USER’S GUIDE 3–14 Manual Feed This printer has n o manual feed tray or multi pur p ose tray. Therefore yo u cannot feed irregular si zed paper in the usual way. However, this printer has a special manual feed mode using Tray 1 ( upper tray) to overcome this inconvenience.
CHAPTER 4 CON TROL PAN EL 4–1 CHAPTER 4 CONTROL PANEL DISPLAY AND LEDS This printe r has one liquid crys tal displ ay (LCD) and four LEDs on the control panel. The dis play can show various mess ages with up to 16 characters in two rows. The LEDs light to indicate the current printer status.

If the paper s ize is changed, the number of li nes/page changes accord in g ly. The new setting is calcu lated with the following expression and the remai nder, if any, is ignored.
CHAPTER 4 CON TROL PAN EL 4–27 GRAPHICS MODE ✒ Note The settings in this mode menu are effecti ve only in the HP-GL mode. They do not appear in any other emulat ion modes. Since the HP-GL emulat ion mode is for a plott er, you can select the plotter pens, t he pen size and percentage of gray in this mode menu.
USER’S GU IDE 4–28 ■ Character Set When you select “C HARACTER SET,” you can se lect the standard and alternate character sets used in the HP-GL emulation mode. Enter the sub-se tting menu and select the menu for the standard or alternate character set with the ▲ or ▼ button and pres s the Set button.

USER’S GU IDE 4–30 ✒ Note Even if you set the res olution to 600 dpi in thi s mode, the printer may not be able to pri nt large and complex full color files at 600 dpi because of insufficient memory. However, it automatically decreases the resolution t o 300 dpi to print them.
