Safety Instructions 11 6. Disengage the blade clutch and put the FSC in the NEUTRAL-P ARK position before st arting the engine (an ignition inter lock switch normally prevents st arting of the machine if these controls are in the OPERA TING position).

T o prevent accident a l starting of the engine when servicing or adjusting th e machine, remove the key fr om the igniti on switch and disconnect the sp ark plug wires. 2. Assembly Instructions 15 SETUP INSTRUCTIONS W alker Mowers are shippe d p artially assembled to our distribution network, and are typically a ssembled by the selling dealer . For any additional assembly besides the following, contact your W alker dealer .
Assembly Instructions 16 Battery Charging 1. Charge the batter y at 15 amps fo r 10 minutes. DO NOT exceed 20 amps maximum re com- mended charging rate. Charge un til specific gravity is at least 1.250. T ot al charging time should not exceed one (1) hour .
Assembly Instructions 17 PT O Shaft Guard Installation Position the shaf t guard as shown and mount with two 1/4-20 x 1/2 in. bolts. PTO Shaf t Guard Inst allation Tilt-Up Roller Wheel Installation Mount the two (2) tilt-u p roller wheels on the brackets on the rear skirt of the deck housing using the P/N 8490 axle bolt, 3/ 8 in.

Assembly Instructions 19 Deck Leveling 1. Position mower on a smooth, level surface. Set the cutting height to the highest position - 5 in. (127 mm) - for easy ac cess under the de ck to measure blade height. Refer to AD JUSTING CUTTING HEIGHT in Operating In structions .
Assembly Instructions 20 PREOPERA TING CHECKLIST Before operating the mower for the first time, and as a routine before daily opera tions, it is important to make sure the mower is pro p erly prep ared and ready for operation. The followin g is a list of items to be checked.
Assembly Instructions 21 CHECK FU NCTION OF SAFETY INTERLOCK SWITCHES Refer to Operating Instructions to check for proper operation of safety switches, both during engine starting an d with the operator leaving the seat with tractor movin g forward or with mowe r blades e n- gaged.
Operating Instructions 22 CONTROL IDENTIFICA TION, LOCA TION, AND FUNCTION Ignition Switch The ignition switch is loca ted on the rig ht front of the body and is used to start and stop the en gine.
Operating Instructions 23 Engine Ch oke The choke control lever (b lack knob) is located on the left side of the seat. T o start a cold engine, move the choke contr ol forward to the ON position. After engine starts, move choke co ntrol toward the OFF position, keeping enoug h choke to allow the engine to run smoothly as it warms up.
Operating Instructions 24 Parking Brake The parking brake functions by locking a detent arm internally into the trans axle. Moving the lever FOR- W ARD engages the parking brake; mo ving the lever BACKW ARD releases the brake. IMPORT ANT : S top the tractor completely before engaging the p arking brake.

Operating Instructions 26 ST ARTING THE ENGINE 1. Before attempting to start the engine, make sure the operator is in the seat, the Forward S peed Control is in NEUTRAL-P ARK position, and the blade clutch an d parking brake are DISENGAGED.
Operating Instructions 27 1. Move the FSC out of NEUTRAL-P ARK position to the desired forw ard speed. DO NOT hold for- ward on steering levers. It is not necessary to hold the FSC lever in position since a friction lock maintains the selected lever position (and forward travel speed) .
Operating Instructions 28 Correct Operator Hand Pos ition o n t he Cont rols 3. Reverse direction of the mower by pulling both levers backward. NOTE: Smooth action on the steering leve rs will produce smooth mower operation. Remem- ber to keep the engine and ground spee d slow until learning the contro l response.
Operating Instructions 29 Blade Clutch Disengaged STOPPING THE MACHINE 1. Slow the engine to idle; put the throttle in the IDLE position. 2. Pull the steering levers to the NEUTRAL-P AR K position and t hen move the FSC lever backwa rd to the NEUTRAL-P ARK pos ition.
Operating Instructions 30 ADJUSTING CUTTING HEIGHT Cutting height is adjusted fr om operators seat u sing the height p eddle to assist in raising th e deck w hile positioning the height adjustment lever and hitch pin. 1. Disengage P TO and stop tractor .

Refer to Deck Leveling in Assembly Instructions . • Use an alternating stripe mowing pattern for best appear ance and vary the directio n of the stripe each time the grass is mowed to avoid wear patterns in the grass.

Maintenance Instructions CLEANING 46 T ransaxle Cooling Fins Keeping th e cooling f ins on the transaxl es clean and free of obstr uction is essential to avoid overheating the transmission fluid an d shortening transmission life. The coo ling fins should be checked every 100 hou rs; and cleaned if necessary .
47 Maintenance Instructions CHECKING/SER VICING CHECKING/SERVICING Security of Air Fi ltration Components NOTE: The following inspection is only an external inspection and should be done withou t “disturb- ing” the filtration componen ts. On a daily basis, visually inspect the external condi- tion of the complete air cleaner system.
48 Maintenance Instructions CHECKING/SER VICING NOTE: Keep blades sharp - cutting with dull blades not only yields a poor mowing job but slows the cutting spee d of the mower and causes extra wear on the engine and bl ade drive by pulling hard.
