Installation Page 11 STEP 1: LCD MONITOR INSTALLATION In the first stage of the installation process, the DTF-521 is installed as a monitor on y our system. As you w ork through the first stage of the installation process, please refer to the LCD monitor cabling diagram on the f ollo wing page when making cable connections .

Installation Page 14 STEP 2: PEN TAB LET INSTALLATION USB CABLE INSTALLATION Plug the square end of the USB cable into the DTF-521 port labeled USB. Plug the other end into an av ailab le USB por t on your computer or on a USB hub attached to y our computer .
Installation Page 15 SOFTWARE INSTALLATION IMPORT ANT : Y ou MUST install the Wacom pen tab let driver softw are for correct pen-on-screen functionality . T o install the tablet software: • Sav e y our work and close all open applications. T emporarily disable any virus protection programs .
Working with your DTF-521 Page 16 WORKING WITH YOUR DTF-521 As you w ork with the DTF-521 interactive pen displa y y ou can rest your hand lightly on the displa y screen, just as if it were a dra wing board or sheet of paper .
Working with your DTF-521 Page 17 USING THE PEN The W acom pen is cordless, battery-free, and senses the amount of pressure y ou apply to the tip . Hold the pen like y ou would a normal pen or pencil.
Working with your DTF-521 Page 18 P EN OPERATIONS P ointing and selecting: Move the pen abo v e the DTF-521 display screen to position the screen cursor . The pen tip needs to be within 5 mm (0.2 inch) of the displa y screen surf ace; y ou do not need to touch the displa y surface to mo v e the screen cursor .
Customizing Page 19 CUSTOMIZING After you master the basics of using y our pen on the DTF-521 interactiv e pen displa y , you ma y want to customiz e the wa y the pen works. The P en T ablet control panel makes it easy to customiz e the DTF-521 and pen.
Customizing Page 20 CONTR OL PANEL OVERVIE W Use the P en T ablet control panel to customiz e your product. Experiment with different settings to find what works best f or you. Any changes y ou make will tak e eff ect immediately , but you can alw a ys click D EFAULT to return to the factory settings.
Customizing Page 21 Y ou can change the S IDE S WITCH M ODE for the wa y you lik e to use the pen when making right-clicks or other click functions . Click on the A DVANCED button. In the dialog box that appears: • Select H OVER C LICK to perf or m clic k functions without touching the pen tip to the tablet surf ace.
Customizing Page 22 CALIBRATING THE DTF-521 Y ou must calibr ate the pen display tab let in order to align the screen cursor position with the position of the pen on the displa y screen. This is required to adjust for par allax caused by the displa y screen cov er glass and coating.
Customizing Page 23 CUSTOMIZING THE P OP-UP MENU Use the P OP - UP M ENU tab to define the av ailab le functions on the P op-up Menu list. T o display the P op-up Menu, set a pen button to the P OP - UP M ENU function. Whenev er you press that button, the P op-up Menu is displa yed.
Customizing Page 24 CONTR OL PANEL DETAILS ADJUSTING DOUBLE-C LICK Double-clic king with the pen tip can be made easier by e xpanding the tap area that accepts a double- click (the doub le-click distance), or b y using the pen’ s side switch to automatically doub le-click when pressed.

Selecting this option displays the D EFINE K EYSTROKE dialog bo x where you can enter a k eystrok e or ke ystrok e sequence to play bac k. O PEN /R UN .... Opens a dialog box where y ou can select a specific application, file, or script to launch.
Customizing Page 27 ADJUSTING THE DISPLA Y FACTORY PRESETS, AUTO-SYNC, AND USER SETTINGS Factory presets: For optimal displa y quality , set your video card to the DTF-521’ s native resolution of 1024 x 768 pix els. See page 49 for signal specifications .
Customizing Page 28 When you open the OSD men u, the follo wing options are displa yed: C ONTRAST . Select to increase or decrease image contrast. B RIGHTNESS . Select to increase or decrease image brightness. P HASE . Select to reduce or eliminate horizontal distor tion lines.
Customizing Page 29 B ACKLIGHT . Select to increase or decrease the backlight brightness le vel. C OLOR . Provides color temperature settings f or 9300˚, 6500˚, and 5000˚ K elvin. D IRECT displa ys the received signal as it is without any adjustment.
Customizing Page 30 ADJUSTING PITCH AND PHASE Some computers and video cards ma y not allow the auto-sync function to fully work when the DTF-521 is first connected. If some por tion of text appears b lurred, adjust pitch and phase by f ollo wing the procedure below .

When using the DTF-521 with a Displa y P ow er Management Signaling (DPMS) compliant computer or video card, the displa y will automatically comply with the below pow er saving par ameters.
Troubleshooting Page 32 TROUBLESHOOTING Most of the time your pen displa y tab let will work flawlessly . But if you are ha ving troub le, W acom recommends you do the f ollo wing: 1. If the W acom tab let driver f ailed to load properly , first perf or m the recommended action in an y error message that ma y appear on your screen.
Troubleshooting Page 33 3. V erify that the tablet and pen are w orking: • Press the pen tip against the displa y and verify that the status LED lights blue . • If the LED does not light, v er ify that the DTF-521’ s USB cable is plugged into an activ e USB por t.
Troubleshooting Page 34 DISPLA Y TROUB LESHOOTING If you encounter prob lems with the DTF-521 displa y , refer to the f ollo wing tables; your prob lem may be described here and you can try the solution offered. For additional inf ormation about color issues, ref er to the documentation that came with your oper ating system or applications.
Troubleshooting Page 35 V GA PROBLEMS The image appears multiple times on the displa y . • Do not e xtend the video cable. Do not use an input selector s witch box. When a still image is displa yed f or a long period of time without refreshing the screen, an after- image remains f or a shor t period of time.

Troubleshooting Page 37 Double-clic king is difficult. Be sure you are quic kly tapping the displa y screen twice in the same place on the pen displa y tablet’ s active area. W acom recommends using the side s witch to double-clic k. Open the P en T ablet control panel and go to the P EN tab .
Troubleshooting Page 38 The pen tip and screen cursor do not properly line up . Open the P en T ablet control panel and select the C ALIBRATE tab . Continue with Calibrating the DTF-521 on page 22.
Troubleshooting Page 39 Y ou suspect the pen tablet pref erences may be corrupted, or want to make cer tain that all settings are at their f actor y def aults. Delete the pen tablet pref erences as f ollows: Windows: Click the START icon and select A LL P ROGRAMS .

Appendix Page 43 APPENDIX CARING F OR THE DTF-521 K eep the pen and the DTF-521 LCD screen surf ace clean. Dust and dir t par ticles can stick to the pen and cause e xcessive w ear to the display screen surf ace. Regular cleaning will help prolong the lif e of your LCD screen surf ace and pen.
Appendix Page 44 REPLACING THE PEN TIP The pen tip (nib) will wear with normal use. Excessive pressure will cause the nib to wear sooner . A worn nib may damage the coating on the DTF-521 displa y screen. T o av oid this, periodic tip replacement is recommended.
Appendix Page 45 USING AN ALTERNATE MOUNT OR STAND If you will be using the DTF-521 in an installation that requires the use of an alternate mounting platf or m, y ou can remov e the adjustable stand from the unit and mount the pen displa y onto an y mount arm or stand conforming to the VESA 75 mm standard.
