4 This cordless telephone must be set up before use. Follow these steps; Step 1 (page 5) Unpack the telephone and accessories. Step 2 (page 6 to 10) Next, choose the best location to set up the base unit. Base unit Step 3 (page 11 to12) Then, insert the battery pack into the handset.
5 Make sure you have received the following items in the package. If any of these items are missing or damaged, contact the Uniden Parts Department (see below).
6 Do the following steps. • Choose the best location • Connect the base unit • Choose the dialing mode Choose the best location Before choosing a location for your new phone, read the INST ALLA TION CONSIDERA TIONS included in the PRECAUTIONS AND IMPORT ANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS brochure.
7 Connect the base unit If you want to install the base unit on the wall, see page 9. Place the power cord so it does not create a trip hazard, or where it could become chafed and create a fire or electrical hazard. 1 Connect the telephone line cord to the TEL LINE jack and to a telephone outlet.
8 Use only the supplied AD-420 AC adapter . Do not use any other AC adapter . Connect the AC adapter to a continuous power supply. Place the base unit close to the AC outlet so that you can unplug the AC adapter easily. If your telephone outlet isn't modular , contact your telephone company for assistance.
9 Standard wall plate mounting This phone can be mounted on any standard telephone wall plate. 1 Snap the wall mount adapter into the notches on the base. 2 Plug the telephone line cord to the TEL LINE jack and the AC adapter to the DC IN 9V jack. 3 Plug the telephone line cord into the telephone outlet.
10 Direct wall plate mounting If you don't have a standard wall plate, you can mount your phone directly to the wall. Before doing this, consider the following: • A void electrical cables, pipes, or other items behind the mounting location, that could cause a hazard when inserting screws into the wall.
11 Charge the battery pack for 12-15 hours befor e you plug the phone into the phone line. 1 Remove the battery cover . 2 Connect the battery pack connector with the correct polarity (black and red wires), then insert the battery pack into the battery compartment.
12 Battery use time (per charge) From fully charged • Seven hours continuous use. • Seven days when the handset is in the standby mode. When the battery charge becomes low When the battery pack is very low and needs to be charged, the phone is programmed to eliminate functions in order to save power .
13 There are three Caller ID setup options available; they are AutoTalk, CIDCW (Caller ID on Call W aiting), and Area Code. Auto T alk allows you to answer the phone without pressing the button. If the phone rings when AutoTalk is on, simply remove the handset from the base and the phone automatically answers the call.
When the area code has already been stored in memory, the stored area code will be displayed. T o change it, use the and number keypad to enter the new area code. Then press . T o complete the setting, press or return the handset to the base unit. 14 1 When the phone is in the standby mode, press .
Other Operations T o Do this T o improve reception Press during the conversation. “ Scanning ” appears on the display. If the operation fails, the error tone sounds. T o adjust the earpiece volume Press or during the call. T o temporarily switch to tone dial Press .
16 1 The phone rings. “ Incoming Call ” appears on the display. 2 Press if not in Auto Talk mode. Press any key (except ) if in Auto Talk mode. “ Talk ” appears on the display. Then the earpiece volume is displayed for 2 seconds. 3 The call-time display starts when you begin to talk.
17 Y ou can turn of f the base or the handset microphone so that the person you are talking with cannot hear you. When speaking with the base 1 Press during a telephone call. The microphone is turned off. 2 T o cancel mute, press , or . 1 Press during a telephone call.
18 Handset ringer tone In the standby mode, press . Each time is pressed, the ringer tone setting changes and the selected ringer tone sounds for 2 seconds. Handset ringer switch This switch turns the handset ringer on or off. Handset earpiece volume Pressing or during a telephone call will change the earpiece volume of the handset.
19 From the handset The last three phone numbers entered can be quickly redialed. If the recently dialed number exceeds 32 digits, only the first 32 digits are retained for redialing. Press and hold to delete the displayed redial number . Redialing from Standby 1 Press .
20 During a call, as you begin to move your handset too far from your base unit, noise increases. If you pass the range limit of the base unit, your call will terminate within 30 seconds. From the base 1 T o call the last number dialed from the base, press .
21 Intercom fr om the base to handset 1 Press on the base. The handset beeps. 2 Press or on the handset. Speak into the handset microphone to answer the base. 3 T o turn off the intercom, press on the handset or on the base. Intercom fr om the handset to base 1 Press on the handset.
22 T o transfer from the handset to the base 1 Press on the handset while speaking on the handset. The caller is put on hold and the intercom tone sounds on the base. 2 Press or on the base. The intercom mode is activated, but the caller is still on hold.
23 Y our EXAI 985HS stores up to 20 names and numbers in the handset plus 10 numbers in the base. On the handset 1 Press and hold until “ Memory Store ” is displayed. 2 Press and or enter a two-digit number (01-20) to select the memory location where you would like to store the number .
24 4 Use the , , , , or keys to enter the name. The name cannot exceed 13 characters. • Use the and key to scroll through the character menu. It contains upper and lower case letters and various characters. • Use the and keys to move the cursor to the desired location.
25 Y ou can store only numbers in the base. 1 Press . The status LED blinks. 2 Dial the number you wish to store. 3 Press . Enter the memory location number (0-9) on the keypad.
26 T o exit the memory function without dialing, press . The handset returns to standby . If you press before , you can confirm the name and number stored in the selected memory location. T o exit this mode, press and hold . The handset returns to standby .
27 Dialing from talk mode 1 Press . “ Talk ” flashes and the volume setting appears. 2 Press . Display a Programmed Number Use the and keys to toggle between the names display and the numbers display. Program name Program number When the stored phone number has 14 or more digits, “ “ is displayed next to the 12th digit.
28 From the base 1 Press . 2 Press . 3 Press the number keypad to select the memory location you wish to dial. 4 Press to finish the call. 1 Press and hold until “ Memory Store ” is displayed. 2 Press and or enter a two-digit number (01-20) to select the memory location you would like to edit.
29 4 Press the or key to select “ Edit Memory ” , then press . The following screen appears. The cursor flashes indicating that the display is ready for the name to be edited. When a name has not been stored, the cursor appears at the beginning of the second line .
30 4 Press to move the pointer down to “ Delete Memory ” command line. 5 Press . The following confirmation screen appears. 6 Press to move the pointer to “ Yes ” . 7 Press or . There is a confirmation tone and the entry is deleted. The following screen appears.
31 1 Press . The status LED blinks. 2 Press again. 3 Enter the memory location number (0-9) of the number you wish to delete. The status LED goes out. A confirmation tone indicates the number has been erased.
32 The Uniden EXAI 985HS permits 3-way conversations between the handset, base, and outside line. When speaking on the handset 1 Press on the base to join the 3-way conversation. This will set the 3-way conversation mode. 2 T o hang up, press on the base.
33 CALLER ID FEA TURES Y ou must subscribe to the Caller ID service from your telephone company to use this feature. When the telephone rings, the Caller ID feature allows you to view the caller's name and phone number on the display before you answer the phone.
34 1 When the Caller ID message is received, the display shows the caller ’ s phone number , along with the date and time. The incoming call information is stored in Caller ID record. If the Caller ID service includes the caller ’ s name, the caller's name appears on the display (up to 15 letters).
35 The Caller ID list stores information for up to 50 incoming calls - even unanswered calls. If a call comes in via a telephone system that does not offer Caller ID service, no information is stored. 1 Press . The summary screen appears. The screen shows the number of new messages and total messages.
36 The EXAI 985HS stores up to 50 messages. If the phone receives the 51st message, the oldest one in the list is automatically deleted. Caller ID data can also be deleted manually. Deleting a Caller ID message 1 Press . Display the message to be deleted from the Caller ID list by pressing o r .
37 Deleting all Caller ID names/numbers 1 Press . 2 Press . The following screen appears. 3 Press or to select “ Yes ” or “ No ” . 4 Press or . When the pointer is at “ Yes ” : A tone sounds and all stored Caller ID messages are deleted. When the pointer is at “ No ” : The display returns to the summary screen.
38 When a long distance call has been set, “ 1 ” appears in the display . Y ou cannot make a call from the Caller ID list if your EXAI 985HS is connected to private branch exchange (PBX). Dial edit Press to move the cursor to the left, make your changes and then press .
39 Storing Caller ID messages in Memory dialing The phone number of the party on the Caller ID list can be stored in memory dialing. 1 Press . Select the phone number to be stored from the Caller ID list by pressing o r . 2 Press . 3 Press and or enter a two-digit number (01-20) to select the memory location.
40 “ Caller ID ” and “ Call waiting ” are separate services. CIDCW (Caller ID on Call W aiting) per for ms the same as regular Caller ID on a call waiting number . Y ou must subscribe to the "Caller ID with call waiting (CIDCW)" service from your telephone company before you can use the following featur es.
41 Y our EXAI 985HS gives you new options for call waiting. At the touch of a button, you can ask the caller to hold or conference them into your current call. Y ou may be required to subscribe to call waiting and call waiting options to use these features.
42 The EXAI 985HS has a built-in answering system that answers and records incoming calls. Y ou can also use your answering system to record a conversation, leave a voice memo message for others who use the phone, or to announce a special message to callers when you're away from your phone.
43 4 Press or until you hear the correct time setting. Numbers 1 through 59 display on the base as each minute is announced. Press again to select the correct time. 5 The LED displays an A or P . Press or until you hear the correct AM/PM setting. 6 Press again to end the time/day setting.
44 1 Press and hold until you hear a tone. Start recording your message immediately after you hear the tone end. 2 When you finish recording your message, press or . A tone sounds and your message plays back on the phone. Preset Message The following message is prerecorded: "Hello, no one is available to take your call.
45 Selecting the message recor d time Y ou can set your answering system to record messages up to one or four minutes long. One minute option: move the REC TIME switch to 1 .
46 Setting ring time switch The ring time/toll saver switch allows you to set the number of rings the caller hears before the answering system plays your outgoing message. Y ou can set the switch to answer after two rings or after four rings. Once the greeting has started, you can stop it when you pick up the call at the handset or base.
47 Playing your message The base LED shows the number of total messages on the display. If the display is blinking, then there are new messages waiting for you. The EXAI 985HS is designed to play your new messages first. After you play your new messages you can then play your old messages.
48 Repeating a message 1 Press to review your message. The number of stored messages is announced. 2 After a message has played for a few seconds, press to repeat the message. 3 Press at any time to stop reviewing messages and return to standby. The message counter LED shows the total number of messages remaining on the system.
When you press , you are permanently deleting the message. Once deleted, the message cannot be replayed. 49 Deleting a message Deleting individual message 1 Press to review your message. 2 If you decide to delete a message, press anytime during the message.
50 Recording a conversation Y ou can record up to 10 minutes of conversation while you are making your call from the handset. Y ou cannot record a conversation while you are speaking on the base. 1 During the conversation from the handset. Press and hold on the base.
51 Remote access away from home Y ou can operate your answering system from a remote location using any touch-tone telephone. Use this function to check for recorded messages, to play or delete messages, even to record a new outgoing message, and to monitor sounds in the room.
52 Y ou cannot use # and while the new messages are playing. Press # then 5 to stop message playback first and go to step 5. If you enter an incorrect PIN code three times, an error tone sounds and the phone automatically hangs up.
53 The digital security code is an identification code used to connect the handset and the base unit. Normally, setting the code is not necessary. The first time you charge your handset, the security code is automatically set.
54 T o attach the beltclip Insert the beltclip into the holes on each side of the handset. Press down until it clicks. T o remove the beltclip Pull both sides of the beltclip to release the tabs from the holes.
55 With the HS910 headset, you can have the convenience of hands free communication while using your cordless phone. 1 Place the headset on your head so the speaker covers your ears. The headband can be adjusted to accommodated a variety of head sizes.
56 Battery replacement and handling When the operating time becomes short, even after a battery is recharged, please replace the battery. With normal usage, your battery should last about one year . Please contact your place of purchase or the Uniden Parts Department for a replacement battery.

58 If your phone is not performing to your expectations, please try these simple steps first. Symptom The status LED won't light when the handset is placed in the base unit. The audio sounds weak and/or scratchy. Can't make or receive calls.
59 Symptom Severe noise interference. The Caller ID disappears. The Caller ID does not display The answering system does not work. Messages are incomplete. After a power failure, the outgoing message is deleted. No sounds on the base unit speaker during call monitoring or message playback.
