These handhelds pro vide touchpad navigation, dynami c graphing, an d interactive computer features .

Handhelds can al so be powered using the TI-Nsp ire™ Rechargeable Bat tery or an approved wall charger , which are sold separately .

10 Getting Started with th e TI-Nspire™ Handheld Using Hints Hints are quick tips available throughout the software on the handheld. There are several easy ways to access Hints: • Press / μ . • Some dial og boxes contain a question mark ic on. Click this icon to open Hints for that task.
Using the Scratchp ad 11 Using the Scratchpad The Scratchpad is a feature of the TI-Nspire™ handheld that lets you quickly: • Evaluate math expressions. • Graph functions. Opening and Closing the Scra tchpad From the Home screen, press » to open the Scra tchpad.
12 Using the Scratchpa d Press b to see the Scratchpad Calculate or Scratchpad Graph menu. These menus are subsets of the TI-Nspire™ menus for the Calculator and Graphs applications. F o r complete listings of those menus, see the documentatio n for those applications.

Inserting Items fr om the Catalog Y ou ca n use the Catalog to insert fu nc tions and comman ds, symbols, and expression templates into the entry line.

If the function is not visible: a) Press a letter key to jump to the en tries that begin with that letter . b) Press ¤ or £ as necessary to hi ghlight the item you are inserting.
Using the Scratchp ad 15 Inserting Expressions Using a Wi zard Y o u can use a wizard to simplify ent e ring some expressi ons. The wizard contains labe led boxes to help you enter th e arguments in the expression. For example, suppose you want to fit a y=mx+b linear regression model to the follow ing two lists: {1,2,3,4,5} {5,8,11,14,17} 1.

18 Using the Scratchpa d Copying a History Item to the Entry Line Y ou can quickly copy an expression, subexpression, or r esult from the history into th e entry line . 1. Press £ or ¤ to move through the history and select the item that you want to copy .
Using the Scratchp ad 19 The cursor moves to the closest valid position in the direction tha t you press. 2. T ype the elements. —or— Insert them from the Catalog. Selecting Part of an Expr ession Y o u can delete, cut, or copy a selected part of an expression.
20 Using the Scratchpa d The entry line changes to dis play the expression f ormat for the specified graph type. Y ou can specify mult iple relation s of each graph type. 3. T ype an expression and any other parame ters required for the gr aph type. 4.
Using the Scratchp ad 21 T o hide the table, click the graph side of the split screen, and then press b > T a ble > Remove T able ( b7 2 ). T o resize columns, click the table and press b > Actions > Resize ( b11 ).
22 Using the Scratchpa d • If the axes are hidden on the page, selecting this tool redisplays them. T racing a Plot Graph T race moves through the poin ts of a graphed func tion, parametric, polar , sequen ce, or scat ter plot. T o enable the trace tool: 1.
Using the Scratchp ad 23 • Create a persistent point that remains on the graph by pressing · when the trace point reaches the point you want to label. The point remains after you exit Graph T race mode. Notes: • The string undef is displayed instead of a value when you move over a point that is not defined fo r t he function (a discontinuity).
24 Using the Scratchpa d The second click marks the lower bo und of the search region and a dotted line disp lays. Note: If you are finding the deriva tive (dy/dx), click the graph at the point (numeric value) to us e for finding the derivative.

Click Save . • If you selected to save to a current (open) document, the Scratchpad pages are added to the docume nt.

A new document opens wi th a list of applications. Note: The tab at the top left of the sc reen indicates th at this is the first page of the first problem.

Configuring Hand helds 61 Configuring Handhelds This chapter provides inf ormation needed to: • Maintain batteries used in the handheld. • Change the default settings. Installing the AAA Batteries T o install the ba tteries shipped wi th your handheld, complete the following steps.
62 Configuring Hand helds 3. Replace the k eypad. • Align the keypad with the grooves as shown. Don’t try to slide t he keypad in from the bottom of th e handheld. Place the keypad about an inch below the screen so that it fits into the grooves and lies flat.
Configuring Hand helds 63 Replacing AAA Batterie s Caution: When removing the keypad to change AAA batteries, be certain that the handhe ld is completely powe red down.
64 Configuring Hand helds 2. Remove the panel. 3. Insert the white connector into the jack, as shown. Note: The red wire in the connec tor should face downward. 4. Thread the wire into the case to secure it. Insert the rechargeable battery into its compa rtment.

Connecting Hand helds and T ransferring Files 79 Connecting Handhelds and T ransferri ng Files This chapter describes how to connect one TI-Nspire™ hand held to another , how to connec t handhelds to a compute r , and how to transfer files between them.
80 Connec ting Handhelds an d T ra nsferring Fi les T o connect the handhelds: 1. Firmly insert either end of the mini-USB cable into the USB port. 2. Insert the other end of the cable into the receiving hand helds’ s USB port.
Connecting Hand helds and T ransferring Files 81 Rules for T ransferring Files and Folders • Y ou ca n transfer documents and OS files. • Operating systems are not inte rchangeable be tween dif f erent handheld typ es. For example, you c annot transfe r a CAS operating system to a non-CAS handheld.
82 Connec ting Handhelds an d T ra nsferring Fi les At the end of a successful transmission, the message “<Folder / File name> transferred as <Folder / Fi le name>.” is displayed. If the file had to be r enamed on the receiv ing handheld , the message will show the new file name.

Double-click the handheld name, an d then navigate to the folder where you want to save the file. 6. Click Save . The file is saved to the sele cted folder and the Save to Handheld dialog box closes.
Connecting Hand helds and T ransferring Files 85 Common Error and Notification Messages Shown on Message and Description Sending handheld If you get an error when sending a folder t o an older TI-Nspire™ handheld, try updating the O S on the receivin g handheld.
86 Connec ting Handhelds an d T ra nsferring Fi les Sending handheld This message indicates that the r eceiving handheld does not have enough memo ry to accept the file being trans mitted. The user of the receiving handheld must free spa ce to obtain the new file.

Receiving handheld This message indicates that the r eceiving handheld has a document with the same name as the document bein g sent.
88 Connec ting Handhelds an d T ra nsferring Fi les Receiving handheld This message indicates that the cabl e is not correctly attached to the receiving handheld’ s link port. Remove the cable then reattach it and try the transmi ssion again. Click OK to cancel the transmission message.
Memory and File Management 89 Memory and File Management The TI-Nspire™ Handheld comes equipp ed with 64 MB of memory . Of the total memory , 32 MB is dedicated to Flash storage and 32 MB is RAM.
90 Memory and Fi le Manageme nt Fr eeing Memory T o free or recover memory , delete documents and/or folders from the handheld. T o keep the documents and folders for later use, transfer them to another handheld or to a computer using the TI-Nspire™ software.
Memory and File Management 91 T ransferring Files to a Computer Use the TI-Nspire™ software to transfer files and folders from a handheld to a computer . 1. Connect your ha ndheld to the c omputer using a standard A to mini -B USB cable. 2. In the TI-Nspire™ software, open the Documents Workspace.

Select the file or folder you want to save to the computer . • Click the file to select one file or folder at a time. • T o select all files on the hand held, select the first file in the list, hold down the Shift key , and then click the last file or folder in the list.

96 Updating th e Handheld O perating System • T o check the status of the rechargeable batter y in TI-Nspire™ CX handhelds, press c54 to open the Handheld S tatus dialog box. • T o check the status of both the rechargeable battery and the AAA batteries in TI-Ns pire™ handhelds, press c54 to open the Handheld S tatus dialog box.
Updating the Handheld Operating System 97 4. Select Help > Check for Handheld OS Update . • If the operating system is curren t, the Check for Handheld OS Update dialog box opens indicati ng that the oper ating system on the handheld is up to date.

Follow th e prompts to update the operating system. • In all versions of the TI-Nspir e™ softwa re, you can use options available in the Documents Workspace: – Open Content Explorer , select the handheld name, and then click and select Insta ll OS .
Updating the Handheld Operating System 99 1. Select the OS file: • If you are upgrading a TI -Nsp ire™ CX handheld, select TI-Nspire.tco • If you are upgrading a TI -Nspir e™ CX CAS handheld, select TI-Nspire.tcc • If you are upgrading a TI -Nspire™ handheld, select TI-Nspire .
100 Updating the Handheld Operating System The updated operating system is in stalled on the handheld. When the update is compl ete, the handheld re boots. 6. On the handheld , follow the prompts to: • Choose a preferred language. • Select a preferre d font size.
Updating the Handheld Operat ing System 101 • It is important to save and close all open documents before performing an OS Up grade. Continui ng with an OS Upgrade on a handheld with an open, unsaved docu ment will cause the loss of that data.
102 Updating the Handheld Operating System OS Upgrade Messages This section lists the information and error messages that can be displayed on ha ndhelds during an OS Upgrade. Shown on: Message and Description Sending handheld This message indicates that the r eceiving handheld does not have enough memory available for the new OS.
