7 1 Intr oduction About This Guide This guide describes the troubleshooting procedures for the Spectra RX T150 and Spectra RXT media. Intended Audience This guide is written f or Spectra RXT150 us ers, who should already be familiar with the technical tasks associated with the maintenanc e and operation of backup systems.

Chapter 2. T roubleshooting the RXT150 9 Using the F orce Eject Utility 1. Log in to the RLC as a user wi th A dministrative privileges. 2. Select Maintenance > T ools . The RXT Utilities screen appears ( Figure 2-1 ). 3. Select Load/Unload Media Pack .
Chapter 2. T roubleshooting the RXT150 10 Holding the Load/Unload Button Hold down the Load/Unload button (Fig ure 2-2) f or approx imately 15 seconds. Note: This action causes the drive to reboot, which in turn causes a forced eject. As a result of the reb oot process, the host temporarily loses contact with the drive.
Chapter 2. T roubleshooting the RXT150 11 Using an A llen Wr ench for Manual Eject Note: Y ou need a #2 Phillips screw driver and a 5/64 Allen wrench (not included with the RXT150) to complete th is procedure. 1. Stop any backups running to the RXT150 and pow er the unit down.
Chapter 2. T roubleshooting the RXT150 12 8. Locate the hole on the side of the RX T150. When you are looking at the front of the unit, this hole is on the righ t side, near the back of the unit ( Figure 2-5 ). 9. Inser t a 5/64 Allen wrench into the hole, and rotate the wrench counter- clockwise .

T roubleshooting the RXT150 13 Checking Messages and Flash Codes The Spectra RX T150 proactively pro vides in form ation to users in tw o different wa ys: through the W eb Interface an d through the front panel’ s digital displa y . The W eb interface provides messages, and the digi tal display pro vides f lash codes.

Chapter 2. T roubleshooting the RXT150 15 Capturing Debug Files SpectraGuard staff may ask f or logs of debug f iles when they troubleshoot a problem. Debug files may rev eal the source of errors in program code or in hardware.

Note: Debug files run constantly , and this screen can be view ed at any time. Each debug file contains up to 5MB of trace information.

Chapter 2. T roubleshooting the RXT150 20 R esetting the RXT150 Resetting the RXT150 allows a soft reboot of the driv e. Caution: Nev er reset the drive while data is being written to RXT media. Only reset the driv e on the recommendation of SpectraGuard T echnical Support.

22 3 T r o ubleshooting RXT Media This chapter reviews how to replace a failed hard driv e inside of an RXT media pack. Caution: Only replace a disk driv e in an RX T media pack under the direction of SpectraG uard support staff. Caution: A RAID 0 RXT media pack requires reformatting.
Chapter 3. T roubleshooting RXT Media 23 Before R eplacing Disk Drives Cautions Caution: Only replace a disk driv e on the direc tion of SpectraGuard Support. Contac t SpectraGuard Su pport if the W eb interface or an LED indicates that a disk driv e has failed.

Chapter 3. T roubleshooting RXT Media 25 R eplacing a Disk Driv e in Silv er and Green RXT Media Use this process to replace a 3.5-inch disk driv e in Silver and Green RXT media. Opening the Media Pack 1. Carefully turn the RXT media pack upside-down.

Remov e the electro-static dis char ge (ESD) panel ( Figure 3-5 ) by lifting up first from the end with the ov erla pping tab (A), then slid ing the panel out from the other end of the media pack (B). 5. Carefully turn the RXT media on its side so that you hav e access to one side of the pack.
Chapter 3. T roubleshooting RXT Media 27 Disconnecting the Disk Drive 1. Use a #2 Phi llips scre wdriv er to remo ve the tw o screws closest to the open side of the pack ( Figure 3-6 ). On Green RXT media, do this only for the driv e—or the driv e abov e the drive— that you are replacing (see F igure 3-7 ).
Chapter 3. T roubleshooting RXT Media 28 4. Use a #2 Phillips screw d riv er to loosen the ESD resistor screw on the side of the disk driv e ( Figure 3-8 ). On Green RXT media, you may get to skip this step. See Figure 3-9. Figure 3-8 The ESD screw (Silver media shown).
Chapter 3. T roubleshooting RXT Media 29 5. Use a #2 Phillips sc rew driv er to loosen the screw on th e bracket that secures the connector to th e disk drive ( Figure 3-10 ). Caution: T a k e care n ot to damage the flex circuit; keep the cable as straight as possible.
Chapter 3. T roubleshooting RXT Media 30 7. Disconnect the disk drive connector ( Figure 3-12 ) from the loose driv e, then remov e the disk drive from the pack. Note: If the failed disk driv e is still in the pack (underneath the drive y ou just remov ed), then repeat Step through Step 7 for the other disk driv e.

Replace the failed disk driv e with the ne w disk drive and plug in the disk driv e connector . 2. Carefully replace the bracket that secures the connector to the disk driv e, sliding it first up the cable, then into place.
Chapter 3. T roubleshooting RXT Media 32 4. If the disk driv e you replaced is the firs t driv e that you could access when you remov ed the bottom of the pack, proceed to Step 5 below . If the drive you replaced is the drive under neath: • Carefull y place the disk drive into the media pack.

Replace the ESD panel: • Slide the end with the cut-outs (F igu re 3-16) into its place at the pogo-pad end of the pack (A in Figure 3-17). • Pinch the sides of the pane l in (B in Figure 3-17) wh ile pushing down (C in Figure 3-17) until the entire ESD panel lays flat in the pack.
Chapter 3. T roubleshooting RXT Media 34 R eplacing a Disk Driv e in Gold RXT Media Use this process to replace a 2.5-inch disk driv e in Silver and Green RXT media. 1. Remov e the two screws on the side panel of the RX T media ( Fig ure 3-19 ). 2. Slide the side panel out.
Chapter 3. T roubleshooting RXT Media 35 6. Slide the side panel’ s metal ta bs into the media pack’ s slots ( Figure 3-21 ). Caution: These tabs pla y a structur al role in pro viding proper pressure on each of the disk driv es in the RXT media pack.
Chapter 3. T roubleshooting RXT Media 36 Finish 1. Load the RXT media pack into the RX T150. 2. Select Maintenance > T ools > Get RXT Media Pack Drive Status . The RXT media driv es should report as Op timal (green), as shown in Figure 3-23 . The RXT media pack automati cally rebuilds itself when placed back into the RXT150.

Chapter 4. W arranty and Repair 39 RXT150 R epair Policy Limited W arranty Spectra Logic warrants the RX T 1 5 0 t o b e i n g o o d w o r k i n g order for a period of one full year from the date of shipment from Spectr a Logic or an authorized Spectra Logic dealer .
Chapter 4. W arranty and Repair 40 Wa r r a n t y S h i p p i n g The RXT150 unit must be retur ned in the original carton an d packed with the original packing material. Failure to do so will v oid the warr anty . S ee the label on the inside lid of the shipping containe r for instruc tions on packing the RXT150.
Chapter 4. W arranty and Repair 41 Standard R epair Ser vice for the RXT150 The standard return-to-factor y service su pplied with the standard warranty , as it applies to the United States and the Eu.
Chapter 4. W arranty and Repair 42 RXT Media R epair P olicy Limited W arranty for RXT Media RXT media is warranted for three years re turn-to-factor y . The standard turn-around time is two w eeks from receipt of the pro duct. Upon completion of repair , Spectra Logic will return the unit via two-da y shipment.
Chapter 4. W arranty and Repair 43 E xpr ess R epair Ser vice for RXT Media Express Repair Service enables the customer to exchange an entire RX T media pack if it requires repair . Express Repair Ser vice is a vailable throughout No r th America and the European Union.
