8 B Introdu cing DVDirect Features You can easily record videos or photos using the DVDirect. You do not need a computer. Create video DVDs • You can record videos fr om connected camcord ers and AV devices directly on to DVDs without using a computer.
9 Introduc ing DVDi rect About this manual Depending on the type of device that is connected, or the image quality (High Definition video or Standard Definition video), you can perform the following operations with the DVDirect. In this manual, different icon s for each operation or image quality appear in section headings.

17 Introduc ing DVDi rect After the power is turned on, the DVDirect automatically detects inserted memory cards and DVD discs and input signals from connected devices. A message indicating how to prepare for reco rding then appears in the display window.
18 You can pe rfor m recor ding pr ocedur es manu ally by select ing opt ions fr om the menu. You can also go to the setup screen (Setup menu) fro m the menu for various settings. Press the RETURN button to return to the menu display (You cannot go back to the menu di splay whi le rec ording or fro m some of operat ing status).
19 Introduc ing DVDi rect Inserti ng a Disc To insert a disc, perform the following while the DVDirect is turned on. 1 Pres s the Z (eject) button. The disc tray ejects. 2 Place t he disc in the disc tr ay with i ts l abel faci ng up, and pres s the Z (ej ect) butto n agai n.
20 When a new disc is inserted When connecting a video device to the VIDEO IN, S VIDEO IN, or DV IN con necto r, an d dubb ing ma nua lly wi th a ne w disc (page 50 ), the foll owing displa y appea rs. When recording, press M or m to select “OK,” and press the (select) button.
21 Introduc ing DVDi rect Inserting a Memory Card Insert the memory card into its corresponding memory card slot. Memory Stick Duo Push the “Memory Stick Duo” into the slot until you hear a click. To remov e, pu sh the “Memo ry S tick Du o” an d pull out.
22 B Crea ting a Video DVD Creating a Video DVD and AVCHD dis c Simply by connecting your camcorder or video device to the DVDirect, you can record videos. If y ou connect a Sony High Definition Handyca m ® , you can dub High Definition (AVCHD) video in the same quality.
23 Cre atin g a Vide o DVD Handycam ® (DVD) (page 45) The entire video content of the camcord er’s 8-cm disc is recorded onto a 12- cm disc. Handycam ® (DV/D8) or DV digital video camera (page 49) The entire content of the DV tape or Digital 8 tape is recorded onto a single disc.
24 Consolidation Dubbing (page 46) This mode allows you to record the contents of multiple 8-cm discs from a Hand yca m ® (DVD) on to a si ngle 12 -cm disc. Playlist Dubbing (p age 40) This mode allo ws you to r ecord videos within a Play list created on your Hand yca m ® (HDD/Memory Stick).
25 Cre atin g a Vide o DVD Manual Dubbing (p age 50) This mode allows you to create a video DVD using the (record) and (stop) buttons on the DVDirect and the play, pause, and stop buttons on the device connected to the DVDirect. You can record while watching the video you wan t to re cor d on t he di spla y.
26 Notes on compat ibility of AVCHD disc • An AVCHD disc cannot be pla yed on an AVCHD incomp atible DVD player or recorder . • Do not insert an AVCHD disc in an AVCHD incompatible DVD player or recorder. The DVD player or recorder may fail to eject the disc and may erase its contents without warning.
27 Cre atin g a Vide o DVD When dubbing, use the input jack appropriate for the conn ecting device and the image quality. Since the input jack here affects the disc selection, see also “Usable disc” (page 29).
28 Notes on presetting camcorders • The [USB SPEED] setting on Handycam ® (HDD/Memory Stick) must be set to [AUTO]. ([AU TO] is the default setting.) • The [A /V t DV OUT] setting on Handycam ® (DV/D8) must be set to [OFF]. ([OFF] is the default setting.

30 The contents of a disc consist of sections, called titles, and sm aller sub- sections, called chapters. A DVD Menu is displayed each time a DVD is inserted into a DVD player and serves as a title page or table of contents for playing the video DVD.
31 Cre atin g a Vide o DVD For vide o DVD s (Dubbing from Handycam ® connected via USB cable) AVCHD discs * 1 Titles are also cre ated if you change the REC mode (from HQ or SP to LP or vice versa), or aspect ratio (from 4:3 to 16:9 or vice versa) in vid eo you re cord.
32 Dubbi ng Fr om a Ha ndyc am ® (HDD/ Memory Stick) –One Touch Dubbi ng– You can create video DVDs fr om your Handycam ® (HDD/Memory Stick) simply by pressing the DISC BURN b utton on the Handycam. As from the next dubbing, additional video can be dubbed onto a disc without dubbing the previous contents again.
33 Cre atin g a Vide o DVD 5 Touch [DIS C BURN] on the ca mcorder ’s LCD s creen, o r press DISC BURN bu tton on the camcorder or Ha ndycam Station. Note Dependi ng on camc order type , the display that appear s in the cam corder’s LC D scree n or button nam es on the ca mcorder may differ .
34 6 Dubbing is com ple te. When dubbing HD (High Definition) video: The disc is automatically ejected. When dubbing SD (Standard Definiti on) video: “Complete” appears in the display window and recording automatically stop s. Press the Z (eject) button to eject the disc, and select whether to finalize the disc (page 65).
35 Cre atin g a Vide o DVD Dubbing From a Handycam ® (HDD/ Memory Stick) –Using the Dubbing Mode– When Ha ndyca m ® (HD D/Memory Stick) is connected to the DVDirect, you can use one of four dubbing modes as prefer red.
36 4 Touch [COM PUTER] o n the c amcorder’ s LCD sc reen. Once you touch the button on the camcorder’s LCD screen, the DVDirect detects the connected camcorder, and the display window on the DVD irect changes.
37 Cre atin g a Vide o DVD You can use Full Dubbing to dub the video contents of the camcorder onto a disc or more than a disc with a single tou ch of a button. 1 Press < or , until “Full” is dis playe d at the top right of the display wind ow.
38 3 Change to a b lank disc whe n the dis c is full. If the contents of the camcorder do not fit onto a single disc, the disc will be finalized once it becomes full. The disc will be automatically ejected, and the following message will appear in the display window.
39 Cre atin g a Vide o DVD 2 Press the (re cord) b utton to start du bbing. “Recording to disc …” appears in th e display window, and the (record) butto n l ight s u p dur ing du bbing .
40 Press the Z (eject) button to eject the disc, and select whether to finalize the disc (page 65). Or, press the RETURN button to go back to the menu displa y. Hint If you eject a disc wit hout final izing af ter video s have been dub bed, you ca n add vi deos onto t he same disc later .

43 Cre atin g a Vide o DVD Dubbing From a Handycam ® (DVD) When a Handycam ® (DVD) is con nected to the DVDirect, you can select Full or Consolidation Dubbing, and then record. 1 Press th e 1 (p ower) bu tton to turn on the DV Direct, and in sert a disc ( page 1 9).
44 Once you touch the button on the camcorder’s LCD screen, the DVDirect detects the connected camcorder, and the display window on the DVD irect changes. Note Dependin g on the cam corder you are using, the above [USB SELECT ] screen may not appear au tomati cally and connec tion conf igurat ion may be required before hand.
45 Cre atin g a Vide o DVD You can use Full Dubbing to dub the video contents of an 8cm DVD onto a disc with a single touch of a button. 1 Press < or , until “Full” is dis playe d in the top righ t of the display wind ow. The following appears in the DVDirect’s display window.
46 When you have multiple 8-cm discs containing video taken with a DVD camc ord er, you c an con sol idat e and du b th e vide o onto one 12 -cm disc. 1 Press < or , un til “Cons olid ation” is disp laye d in the t op rig ht of the dis play w indow.
47 Cre atin g a Vide o DVD Hints • T o consolida te the vi deo conte nts of ano ther 8- cm disc onto th e curre nt disc, repla ce the 8-cm disc in the DVD camcord er with the new 8-cm disc , and press th e (record) button on the DVDirect.
48 Dubbing Fr om a Handycam ® (DV/D8) or DV digital vi deo camera When a Handycam ® (DV/D8) or DV digital video camer a is connected to the DVDirect via a DV (i.LINK) cable, you can select Full or Manual Dubbing. 1 Press the 1 (power) button to turn on the DVDi rect, and ins ert a disc (page 19).
49 Cre atin g a Vide o DVD 4 The fol lowing app ears in the DVD irect's display window. You can select a dubbing mode displayed at the top right of the display window by pre ssing < or , . For selecting each dubbing mode, refer to the page below.
50 2 Press the (r ecord) bu tton to s tart dubb ing. The DVDirect starts dubbing at the same time the camcorder starts playback. When the video tape is not at its beginning, it will automatically rewind and the DVDirect starts dubbing. “Recording” appears in the disp lay win dow, a nd the ( record ) butto n light s up d uring dubbing.
51 Cre atin g a Vide o DVD 2 Press the (re cord) b utton to start du bbing. Durin g dubb ing, “R ecordin g” app ears in the d isplay window du ring v ideo playback. 3 Press the (stop) bu tton to st op dubbi ng. Wait a moment until the display window changes.
52 Dubbi ng From Video De vices You can manual ly dub t he po rtions of vide o you wa nt to dub by a lterna ting between the play and stop buttons. 1 Press the 1 (p ower) bu tton to turn on the DVDirect. A message prompting you to insert a disc appears in the display window.
53 Cre atin g a Vide o DVD For S-video cables: Connect the video device’s S-video out connector to the DVDirect’s S VIDEO I N connec tor usin g the S -video c able (no t suppl ied).
54 5 Press the (r ecord) bu tton to s tart dubb ing. “Rec ordin g” ap pea rs in t he di splay wind ow d uring vide o play bac k. 6 Press the (stop) but ton t o stop dub bing. Wait a moment until the display window changes. 7 To dub ad dition al vi deo, repe at step s 4 to 6.
55 Creat ing a Ph oto DVD B Creating a Ph oto DVD Creating a Photo DVD You can easily record photos taken with your digital still camera fr om a memory card onto a DVD. Still images stored on a Handycam ® (HDD/DVD/Memory Stick) can also be recorded onto a disc.
56 The following types of photo DVD can be created with the DVDirect. Photo backup DVD Photo backup D VDs allow you to sto re photos (JPEG files) taken with a digital still camera or Handycam ® on a DVD disc. You can view the photo backup DVD created with the DVDirect in the display window or view it using the DVD drive of a computer.
57 Creat ing a Ph oto DVD Use either the USB jack or one of the memory card slots on the DVDirect, according to your device and the media on which photos are r ecorded.
58 The following discs can be used for creating a photo DVD. Slideshow DVDs The contents of a slideshow DVD consist of titles and chapters as a Video DVD (page 30). When you create a slideshow DVD, a chapter is created for every 10 photos. And up to 99 chapters per title can be created.
59 Creat ing a Ph oto DVD Storage locations on photos (JPEG files) Some folders are created on a photo DVD, and all photos (JPEG file s) are stored in the folder “100VRDMC.” Hint File n ames are auto matica lly crea ted when the photo DVD is create d.
60 Dubbing Ph otos Stored on a Memory Card/Handyc am ® 1 Press the 1 (power) button to turn on the DVDi rect, and ins ert a disc (page 19). The DVDirect starts reading the inserted disc. Hint You can also op erat e from the “ Menu” display to re cord the ph otos.
61 Creat ing a Ph oto DVD Touch the media display storing photos on your camcorder’s LCD screen. The display window on the DVDirect changes. 62 For Select Photo Dubbing: Press < or , until “Select Photos” displays. Press M or m to select “Thumbnail” or “Shooting Date.” Press M m < , to sel ect the thumbna il or sh ooting date yo u want to dub and press the (select) button to mark.
63 Creat ing a Ph oto DVD 4 Press the (re cord) b utton to start du bbing. During dubb in g, the p rogre ss a ppear s in the dis pl ay win dow, and th e (record) button remains lit.
64 To display only on e photo Press the (stop) button when thumbnails are displayed. The phot o selecte d is displayed i n full. The photo can be rotated 90 deg rees right with each press of the , button. The photo can be r otated 90 degrees left with each press of the < button.
65 Finali zing/V iewing the C reate d DVD B Finaliz ing/Vie wing the Creat ed DVD Removing/Finalizing the Created Disc When dubbing is complete, press th e Z (eject) button to eject the disc. Then you c an selec t whet her to k eep the disc un final ized (t o add videos o r photos later), or to create a completed disc (finalized) (page 66).
66 3 Select wh ether to cr eate a sli deshow fo r a photo D VD. Press M or m to select whether to create a slideshow, and press the (select) button. To complete the disc as a photo backup DVD, select “No.” To complete the disc as a slideshow DVD, select “Yes.

68 Previewing a Video DVD and a Photo DVD You can play ba ck and check a vide o DVD and a photo D VD dubbed with the DVDirect in the display window on the top of the unit. Notes • Sound c annot be heard when previewing the disc on th e DVDirect. • You ca nnot outp ut video im ages to an exter nal devic e, such as a TV .
69 Finali zing/V iewing the C reate d DVD When a video DVD that has not been finalized is i nserted: The first title on the disc starts to play automatically. Press < or , to select the title you want to view. To sto p playback, press the (stop) button.
70 When a slideshow DVD is inserted: The foll owi ng dis pla y appea rs . Press M or m to select “Photo Slideshow” or “Original Photos.” When “Photo Slideshow” is selected, photos on a DVD are automatically displayed in rotation. When you select a title from the DVD Menu to play as a video DVD, photos within the title are played.
71 Setup B Setup Using the Set up Menu You can change the various settings for creating disc s in the setup menu screen. The default setting is underlined in the following list. 1 Pres s the 1 (power) button to turn on th e DVDirect . 2 Pres s the R ETURN butt on.
72 Select the recording quality to use when creating a video DVD. Select the preset time used to stop recording automatic ally when creating a video DVD. Note The “ Auto Stop T imer” se tting i s cancel led wh en the re cording i s comp leted, th e (Stop) button is pressed du ring recor ding, or the power is turne d off.
73 Setup Select a background image to apply to the DVD Men u screen of a video DVD or a slideshow DVD. To use a JPEG file in a DVD Menu When “JPEG” is selected, you can set your favorite photo (JPEG file) for the DVD Menu screen of a video DVD or a Slideshow DVD.
74 Notes • There should onl y be one MP3 fi le saved i n the top directory of Me mory Card. If ther e are many files in the top direc tory of the Memor y Card, the desi red music may not be set as the backgroun d music. • When you ha nd the created Slidesho w DVD to others, ensure that any backgr ound music is not cop yrighted .

77 Setup You can check the system software version of the DVDirect. Press m to select “System Info,” and press the (select) button to display the software version in the display window. Hint The syste m software is the built-in software that makes t he DVDirect work.
78 B Addi tional Informat ion About Discs The following writable discs are compatible with the DVDirect. Howe ver, not al l dis c opera tio ns ar e supp ort ed. * On ly use when connecti ng to the DV IN, VIDEO IN, or S-VIDEO IN connector. Note DVD-R DL, CD-R, CD-RW and 8-cm DVD cannot be used.
79 Additional Informatio n About Memory Card s The types of “Memory Stick” that can be used with the DVDirect ar e listed in the table below. However, proper operation is not guaranteed for all “Memory Stick ” produc ts. * 1 Readin g of data that re quires Mag icGat e functi ons cannot be performe d with the DVDire ct.
80 • Insert a “Memory Stick” into the Multi memory card slot, and insert a “Memory Stick Duo” into the Memory Stick Duo slot. When inserting a “Memory Stick Duo” with an adapter into the Multi memory card slot, the DVDirect may not work correctly.
