2 System setup 24 Connecting peripherals The system unit, key board, mouse, and monitor constitute the basi c system. Befor e connecting any other periphera ls, connect these bas ic peripherals first to test if the s ystem is running properly.

2 System setup 26 To connect the VGA monitor To con nect the VGA moni tor, simp ly plug the mon itor cab le in to the VGA/monitor port (blue port) located on the rear pane l of the server.
27 To connect the power cable Plug the power cable into the power ca ble socket located on the rea r panel of the server. Then plug the other end of the power cable int o a power outlet.
2 System setup 28 Turning on the system After making s ure that you have properly s et up the syst em and connected all the required c ables, you can now power on the sys tem. To power on the system , press the power butt on on the front panel. The syste m starts up and di splays a welcome message.
29 Power-on problems If the system does not boot after you have applied power, check the following factors that might have caused the boot f ailure. • The external power cable may be loosely connected. Check the power cable connection f rom the power s ource to the power cable socket on the r ear panel.
2 System setup 30 Operating system configuration The Acer Altos G520 series ser ver comes with Ac er EasyBUILD that allows you to conveniently insta ll your choice of operating s ystem. To start using EasyBU ILD, follow the steps below. 1 Locate the EasyBUILD Syst em CD included in the syst em package.
31 Network connection The server has one 10/100/10 00 Mbps Gigabit Etherned LA N port located on the rear panel for fast network connection. To connect to the network, s imply plug the network cable int o the Gigabit LAN port (gray port). Note: The illustration be low shows the Altos G520 Basic server chassis.
2 System setup 32 Tower-to-rack option Aside from its tower configuration, the A cer Altos G52 0 series server can also be mounted in a rack-m odel position. A rack mount k it is avail able fo r customer s who wa nt to con vert a to wer-mou nted sy stem to rack-model design.
33 Turning off the system To turn off the se rver, o n the Win dows ta skbar cl ick on the Start butto n, po int to Shut Down... , select Shut down from the drop-down window then click on OK . You can th en turn off all peripherals connected to your server.

37 Upgrading the system Certain components of t he server are upgradeable such as the drives , the CPU , the memo ry, and the ex pansio n cards . Howev er, for saf ety purposes, we do not recomm end that you perfor m these upgrades yourself.
3 Upgrading the system 38 3 Open the system according t o the instructions beginning on page 39. 4 Follow the ESD precautions desc ribed in this section when handling a server component. 5 Remove any expansion board(s) or peripheral(s) t hat block access to the DI MM socket o r other compon ent con nector.
39 Opening the server Caution! Before you proceed, make sure that you have turned off your system and all peripherals conne cted to it. Read the “Preinstallation instructions” on p age 37. You need to open the server bef ore you can install addit ional components.
3 Upgrading the system 40 2 Open it approximately 90°. 3 Lift it up a little (1) , then m ove it away from the chassis (2) . 4 Remove the upper bezel assembly by pressing the two f inger releases (1) , then lift fro m the bo ttom (2) and remove. BB!H631!.
41 To remove the side panel The side panel is attached t o the server by two (non-re moveable) thumbscrews. To remov e the sid e pane l: 1 Loosen the thumbscrews loc ated at the end of the l eft panel closest to the rea r panel (1) . 2 Slide the left panel slightly rearward (2) , then upwar d (3) before detaching it from the chassis (4) .
3 Upgrading the system 42 2 Pu ll out th e air ba ffle to remove i t from the c hassis (2) . Caution! After completing the component upgrade/replacem ent procedures, do not forget to reinstall the air baffle before replacing the chassis panels.
43 Configuring the Hot Plug HDD cage This se ction i nclude s instru ctions fo r removi ng and install ing th e Hot Plug HDD cage as well a s procedures on how to ins tall a hard disk into the cage’s hard disk ca rrier. Note: The Hot Plug HDD cage feature is only applicable to the Altos G520 model.

Refer to “Mainboard layout ” on page 14 for the location of t he conne ctors.
49 Configuring the non-Hot Plug HDD cage This section includes inst ructions for rem oving and installing the non- Hot Plug HDD cage as well a s procedures on how to ins tall a hard disk into the cage. To remove the cage 1 Turn off the system a nd all the peripherals connect ed to it.
3 Upgrading the system 50 To install a hard disk into the cage 1 Re move the HDD cabl e cage fro m the cha ssis. Re fer to the instructions in the preceding section. 2 Remove the four screws that secure a pr eviously installed hard dis k to the cage then pull the HDD out.
51 To install the cage 1 Turn off the system a nd all the peripherals connect ed to it. 2 Unplug all cables from the power outle ts. 3 Place the system unit on a f lat, stable surfa ce.
3 Upgrading the system 52 Installing and removing storage devices The system support s one 3.5-inch and three 5.25-inch int ernal storage devices. The system comes pre-inst alled with a floppy drive and a CD- ROM drive. The two empt y 5.25-inch half-height bays allow you t o install additional drives s uch as another optical dr ive or a tape drive.
53 To install a 5.25-in ch storage device Prior to inserting any dev ice into a 5.25 inch device bay, y ou must attach mo untin g rails t o it. Note : Contact you local Acer deale r or authorized service center to purchase the 5.25 inch device m ounting kit.
3 Upgrading the system 54 2 Insert the CD-ROM drive into t he drive bay until the locking tabs click. 3 Connect the power and bus cables to the new dr ive.
55 Upgrading the CPU This section includes inst ructions for r emoving and installing a CPU. To remove a CP U with heatsink Before install ing a n ew CPU i n a sock et, remov e first an y previ ously installed CPU from t hat socket. Important: Before re moving a CPU from the ma inboard, make sure to create a backup file of all important data.
3 Upgrading the system 56 Lift the CPU locking lever until it is fully extended (1) . Gently unseat and pull the CPU from the socket (2) . Warning! The hea tsink becomes very hot when the syste m is on. NEVER touch the hea tsink with any metal or with your h ands.
57 4 To install the CPU to its sock et, follow the steps below: Insert the CPU into t he socket (1) . Lower the CPU locking lever to secure the CPU (2 ) .
3 Upgrading the system 58 5 Replace the heatsink on top of the CPU (1) . Using a screwdrive r, loosen the screws t hat hold the heatsink assembly in place (2) . Plug the CPU fan in to the m ainboard (3) . For help locating the CPU fan c onnectors on the mainboard, s ee “Mainboard layout” on page 14.
59 Upgrading the system memory This se ction i nclude s instru ctions fo r removi ng and install ing a memory mod ule. The Server Boards Alt os G520 each provides four DDR266 / DDR333 DIMM site s in two DI MM bank s. The max imum memory capaci ty is 8GB for either DDR266 or DDR333 memor y.
3 Upgrading the system 60 To remove a DIMM Before installing a new DIMM in a socket, remove first any prev iously installed DIMM fr om that socket. Important: Before re moving any DIMM from the mainboa rd, make sure to create a ba ckup file of all important data .
61 4 Ali gn the n insert the DIMM i nto the s ocket (1) . 5 Press the holding clips inward to lock t he DIMM in place (2) . Note: The DIMM socket is sl otted to ensure proper installation. If you insert a DIMM but it does not fit e asily into the socket, you may have inserted it incorrectly.
3 Upgrading the system 62 Replacing the Backup Battery The lithium battery on t he server board powers t he RTC for up to 10 years in the absence of power. When the battery s tarts to we aken, it loses voltage, and the ser ver settings stored in CMOS RAM in t he RTC (for example, the date and time) may be wrong.
63 9 Remove the new lithium batter y from its package, and, being careful to observe t he correct polarity, insert it in the bat tery socket. 10 Reconnect or replace any internal components you needed to discon nect o r remove. 11 Replace the server’s cover.
3 Upgrading the system 64 Installing an expansion card This section explains how t o install an expansion car d. The onboard expansion slots support PCI (Peripheral Component Interc onnect) cards. Note : The BIOS setup automatical ly detects and assigns resources to the new device (applica ble only to Plug-and-Play expansio n cards).
65 6 Align the card in an empty slot on the mainboard. 7 Ins ert the br acket wi th the ca rd into the sele cted slo t (1) . Make sure that the car d is properly seated. 8 Secure the card by moving the ex pansion card locking lever back to the locked position (2) .
3 Upgrading the system 66 Installing a redundant power supply module The Altos G520 serve r power subsystem c onsists of two hot-s wappable power supply module bays that accept standar d 610-watt power supply modules. The sys tem comes bundled with only a single power supply module leaving one power supply module bay empty.
67 To install a redundant power supply module 1 Remove the screw securing the cove r of the empty optional power supply module bay, then remove t he cover. 2 Slide the redundant power supply module into the empty bay until you feel resistance. BB!H631!.
3 Upgrading the system 68 3 Press the module handle to s ecure the power s upply module to the bay. 4 Verify that the power indicators on both the main power supply and on the newly installed redundant power s upply are illuminated (green).

71 BIOS setup BIOS setup is a hardwar e configuration program built into your system's B asic Inp ut/O utput Sy stem (BI OS). Si nce most sy stems are already properly configured and optimized, ther e is no need to run this utility.
4 BIOS setup 72 Entering BIOS setup Power on the server to start the s ystem POST (Power O n Self Test) process. During bootup, pr ess <F2> to ente r the BI OS setup screen. Note: Note: You must press <F2> while the system is booting. This hot key does not work at any other time.

77 Processor Summary and Configuration The Processor Sum mary/Configuration subm enu displays general information about the ins talled processor (s) and lets you define advanced settings.

81 LBA/La rge Mode Selects the hard disk drive translation method. For drivers with more than 5 04 MB, the LBA mode is necessary. Disabled Auto Block (Multi- Sector Trans- fer) Mode Enhances disk performance de pending on the hard disk in use.
4 BIOS setup 82 S.M.A.R.T Enables or disables the S.M.A.R .T (Self- Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology) function of the internal h ard disk. If 'Auto' is selected, BIOS setup will ena- ble the S.M.A.R.T function if the dri ver supports it.
83 Floppy Configuration The Floppy Configuration submenu display s the type of floppy drive installed in the serve r. 91 Boot Settings Configuration The Boot Settings Configurat ion submenu lets you specif y the preferre d settin gs for syst em bootu p. Parameter Descripti on Option Quick Boot Allows the system to boot faster by skipping some POST routines. Disabled Enabled Quiet Boot Enables or disables the Quiet B oot func- tion.
4 BIOS setup 92 Boot Device Priority The Bo ot Device Priority submenu let s you specify the boot se arch sequence during the POST proce ss. Bootup Num-Lock Sets the power on state for Numlock. Off On PS/2 Mo use Support Enable this parameter if you i ntend to use a mouse or trackball with a PS/2 interface.
93 BIOS setup will display an err or message i f the drive(s) specifie d is not bootable.
