20 Recor ding a disc right away! This section explains the basic procedure for making digital recordings using an optical cable conn ected to a CD player , Digital TV or other d igital equipment. Mak e sure to use the optical cable. 1 Make connections.
21 2 Insert a recor dable disc. 1 Slide O P EN to ope n th e li d. 2 Inser t a disc with th e label side f acing front, and press t he lid do wn to clos e. 3 Place th e rec ord er on the battery chargi ng s tan d. Make sure to check the record -protect tab is closed.
22 3 Confirm the operation mode. This re co rder has two ope ration mod es, “Hi-MD m ode” and “M D m ode”. The op er ation mode is a utomatically re cognized whene ver the di sc is insert ed. After you i nsert a disc, chec k t he o peration mo de o n t he display w in dow of th e recorder.

26 If the play does not s t art Make sure t he recorder i s not lo c ked (pages 14 , 15, 18). The playback soun d ma y skip i f: • the rec order is subj ected to s trong, repe ated shocks. • a dirty or scratch e d disc is played. When usin g a dis c in Hi-MD mod e, the sound may drop out fo r a ma xim um of about 12 seconds.

While the reco rder is recordin g, press T MAR K at the point yo u wa nt to add a track mark .
40 Using the group function when recor ding What is the group function? The grou p function is pr o vide d to allow playba ck of discs wi t h group se ttings. The group fu nction is convenient fo r playback of disc s on which several albums or C D sing l e s hav e been rec or ded.
41 Y ou can add a track t o an existin g group. This operat i o n can be don e on the record er only . Adding a new track at th e end of th e selec ted gr oup 1 While th e recorder is stopp e d and the group to wh ich you want to add a trac k is se lected, sl id e z REC to the ri g h t whil e p r essin g GROUP.

47 Listening to trac ks or groups in a desired sequence (Program Play) Y ou can listen to tracks or groups in a desir ed sequence. Programming tracks (T rack Program) 1 Do st ep 1 and select “Pr ogram Play ” in step 2 o f “P laying tracks in M ain play m o de” (page 44).
48 Listening to a secti on of a track repeatedly (A-B Repeat) Y ou can listen to a speci f i c section within a trac k repeatedly b y sele cting the st arting point A, an d ending point B. Make sure tha t point s A and B a r e with in the sa m e track.

51 Changing playback speed (Speed Control) The S p ee d Control fun ction is usef ul fo r langu age study an d ot he r purpose. Th is funct ion cha nges th e play back spe ed with out ch anging t he pl ayback p itch . The p la yback speed can be varied from +100 % to –50% the nor mal speed, in 1 3 steps.

53 Editi ng r ecorde d tracks Befor e editing Y ou can edi t your re cordings by adding/ erasing track mark s or labelin g tracks an d disc s. • Premaste red discs cannot be edit ed . • Close t he record-pro tect tab on the side of the disc befor e edit ing (page 7 8).
54 Character palette The ch ar ac ter palette has the following configurat ion. For the Asian, African and tour ist mo dels A vailable characters • Capital and s mall letters of the English alph abet • Numbe rs 0 to 9 • Symb ols * * The available symbols will differ fo r Hi-MD mode and MD mode (see “Character palette” on page 54) .
55 • If yo u enter the s ymbol “/ /” between the charact ers in di sc names su ch as “abc/ /def”, you may be unable to use the gr oup f unc ti on (in MD mode only). • On the rem ote control fo r the As ia n, African and tourist mo dels, Chinese char acte r s c an be displaye d but cannot be input .

57 Assigning tracks or groups as a new group (Group Set) W ith this function , you can as sign exi s ting tr a cks or gr o ups to a ne w gr oup, and al so you can assi gn a tr ack t hat curre nt l y belongs to no g roup to an exi s ting gr oup.
58 4 Label a gro up ( se e “ Addin g t itl es (T itle)” ( page 53)). • In step 2, the f irs t track must b e either th e fi rst track of an exis tin g g ro up or a tra ck th at d o es not belon g to a group . • When sel ecting th e last tr ack in st ep 3, mak e sure the track co mes a ft er th e on e s ele cted in step 2.
59 2 T urn the jog dial until the destination track number flashes in the display . For t he e xample , sinc e trac k C wil l be moved to track “02” , turn the jog dial unti l “ 02” flashes i n th e di s play . 3 Press the jog dial to e nter the selecti on.
60 z If the track or grou p has been labeled, slide the jog le ver to wards > to ma ke the track or group nam e appear in t he display du r ing operatio n. Slide th e jog le ver towards . to return to the tr a ck or group nu mber display . If all track s are moved out of the group, the group aut oma ti cally disappears f r om the dis c.
61 Y ou can er ase track s in a sele ct e d group . Note tha t on ce a r ecording has been erased, you cannot retrieve it. Be sure to check the con te nts of the group before you erase it. 1 Sele ct a group yo u want to er a se and check the con tents (see page 45).
62 Dividing a track (Divi de) Y ou can di vide a t rack with a t rack ma rk, creat in g a ne w t ra ck from the pa rt follo wing the t rack mark. Y ou can also make f ine adjustments to the track mark position b efore making the a ctual division. The tr ac k numbers w i ll in cr ease as fo ll ows.
63 2 Press the 5-way cont r o l key towards FR or FF (tu rn the jog dial on the remote contr ol) to adjust t he point to divide. Pres sing th e contro l ke y (tur ning th e jog di al ) moves the dividi ng p oint forw ard or ba ckwards.
64 2 Find the track mark by pr essing the 5- way cont r o l key towards FR slightly . For examp le, to e rase th e third t rack mark , f ind th e beginning of the th ird track . “ 00: 00 ” appears i n t h e d isplay . “MA R K ” ap pears in the di splay for a few second s.

69 Starting the pl ayback quickly (Quick Mode) The recorder is f act ory set to quic kly start play ba ck after t h e playba ck butt o n i s pres sed. Y ou can ch ec k the sett i ng as fol l o ws. 1 While the rec order is stop ped or playing, enter the menu a nd select “Opt i on ” - “Quick Mo de”.
70 • Even if you se lect “MD” as the “Disc Mode” settin g, the ope r a tio n mo d e can only be “Hi- MD” when using a 1GB Hi-MD disc. • The oper a tion mode set in th e “ D isc Mode.
71 2 T urn t he jog di al unti l “Re verse” appear s in t he displ ay , and then pre ss to enter t he selection. T o t urn the s etting t o nor mal Sele ct “Defau l t ” in step 2. Setting the clock T o stamp th e recorded dat e and time on the disc, you first need to set th e clock.
72 Usin g the recorder wit h a co m pu te r What you can do through connection with a computer T o use t he r ecorder co nne cted to a computer , you must install the software from the supplied CD-R OM. For details on the i nstallation pr ocedure, refer to the “S of twar e Operati on” section.
73 Power (bus power) is s upp lied from the USB port of the computer . This allo ws the recor de r to be used wi th ou t po we r be ing supplied fr om the rechar g eable battery .

83 Playback sound skips. • The recorder is p laced where it receives continuo us vibration. , Put the r eco r der on a stable pl ace . • A very short track may cause sound to skip. , T ry not to create a sho r t tr ac k. Sound has a lot of static.
84 There is no R- channel sound outpu t whe n playin g a track recorded from a cass ette deck or throug h a n amplif ier , or when liste nin g to sound from a cass ette deck or ampl ifier . • The re is no R-c hannel output if the cassette deck or an amplifier is conn ec te d with a mon aural cor d.
85 While using gro up function Symptom Cause / Remedy The grou p fun ction does not operate. • Whi le using a disc without group setting, a n attempt was made to select some grou p-related menu. , Use a disc with gro up set ti ng . A track c annot be record ed to a new group.
86 Y ou can not tra nsfe r audio data from you r compute r that will f ill up the r emaining r ecording time on the di sc. • The mini mum recordable time on a disc is no rmally 2 se conds in stereo, 4 seconds in LP2 stereo mode, and 8 seconds in LP4 stereo mode.
87 The re corder do es not work or works poorly . • T he lid is not firmly closed. , Clos e the lid u nt il it clic k s.
