32 Recording f rom a micr ophone Connect a stereo micr ophone (E CM-717, EC M-MS907, EC M- MS957, etc. ; not supplied) to the MIC (PLUG IN PO WER) jack. 1 Insert a record able MD and pre ss and slid e REC to t he right. For other operat ions, s ee “ Record ing an MD right awa y! ” (page 1 5).
33 Adjusting the recor ding level manually (Manual recor ding) When you record , the sound l evel is adjusted a utomatically . If necessary , you can set the le vel manually . Note Adjust the record ing level while the r ecorder is in st andby mode. Y ou can not adjust it while recor ding.

The output is analog. The re corder plays th e MD digita lly and send s analog si gnals to the externally conn ected equi pment.

45 Various way to use the radio Presetti ng radio stations automatically Y ou can autom atically p reset radio st ations who se receptio n is good. Once a statio n is preset, yo u can tune it in at any time simp ly by selec ting the preset number . Up t o 40 stations can be prese t, 30 for FM and 10 f or AM.

53 Erasing a track mark When yo u recor d with analo g (line) inpu t, unnecess ary track ma rks may be recorded w here reco rding level is low . Y ou can er ase a track mark to combi ne the tracks befo re and after the track mark. Th e track numb ers will ch ange as fo llows.
54 Moving recor ded tracks Y ou can chan ge the order of the recorde d tracks. 55 Labeling recor dings Y ou can nam e discs whi le the record er is stop ped, track s while the recor der is playin g, and both wh ile the reco rder is rec ording. Each name c an be as long as 20 0 letters. Each disc can hol d up to 1700 al phanume ric letters du ring playb ack or s top.
56 3 Press < MENU , repeated ly to s elect a letter and pres s ENTER. The s elected letter stops flashin g and th e cursor mov es to t he next inpu t position. 4 Repeat step 3 and enter all characters of t he labe l name. T o ca ncel labeling , press x .

58 Power sources Y ou can use th e recorder on house current or as follo ws. In the recorder … — a nickel cadmium rechargeable battery NC-WMAA (supplied) — an LR6 (size AA) alkaline dry battery (not supplied) It is preferable to use the recorder on house current when recording for a long time.
59 When to replace the batter y When the dry battery or recharge able battery is weak, flashing r , “ LO W BA TT , ” etc. a ppears in the display ( “ Lo batt, ” etc. appears in the display on the remote control). Replace the dry battery or charge the rechargeable battery .

63 Note on digital recording This reco rder uses the Serial Copy Manage ment System, whic h allows only first- genera tion digital copie s to be made from pr emastered software. Y ou can only m ake cop ies f rom a home- reco rded MD by using the ana log connecti ons.

67 System limitations The r ecording sys tem in your M iniDisc rec order is ra dically differen t from th ose used in cas sette and DA T de cks and is char acterized by the limit ations described b elow . Note, ho wev er , that these li mitations are due t o the inhere nt nature of the MD recordi ng system i tself and not t o mech anical causes.
68 The total recorded time and the remaining time on the di sc may not total the maximum record ing time (60, 74 , or 80 minutes). Normally , recording is done in minimum units of appr oximatel y 2 seconds (i n stereo), 4se conds (in m onaural or LP2 m ode), or 8 sec onds (in LP4 mode).

74 What is an MD? How Min iDisc works MiniDisc (MD) comes in tw o types: prem astered (prerecord ed) and reco rdable (blank). Premastere d MDs, recorded at music studios , can be play ed back almos t endlessl y . Ho wev er, they can ’ t be recorded on or over lik e cassette tapes.
75 Quick Ran dom Access Like CDs, MDs offer instantaneous random access to the be ginni ng of any music trac k.
