3 FEATURES Your new receiver is a versatile audio/ video co ntrol center. The re ceiver is designed to sound sensational and be an attractive, easy-to-use addition to y our audio/vid eo system. Although yo u already have a good ide a of your receiver’s features, we would like to take a moment to point out ce rtain highlights.
4 THE BASICS The following is intended to familiarize users with common term s and applications of Home Theater equipment. Sources - your receiver can p rovide audio from its built-in AM/FM tuner. It can also provide limited video from its on-screen menu system.
5 Stereo - Stereo contains two di screte, front left and right full range au dio channels. Thi s is the most common format for music and i s also used on many movies.
6 DTS NEO:6 – DTS Neo:6 is an advances m atrix decoder. It will take any two-channel source and expand it into five or six channels, depending on the user’s speaker lay out. Two-channel sources inclu de VHS tapes, broadcast television, stereo CDs and DVDs.
7 THX Surround EX ™ - Dolby Digital Surround EX is a joint development of Dolby Laboratories and the THX division of Lucasfilm Ltd. In a movie theater, film soundtra cks that have been encode d with Dolby Digital Surroun d EX technology are a ble to reproduce an extra channel, which has been ad ded during the mixing of the p rogram.
8 Bass Management - Dolby Digital and DTS-ES formats m ay contain up to 6 ful l range chann els plus LFE. Only a system with six full-range (large) s peakers plus a subwo ofer can directly reprodu ce these formats.

12 MAKING THE CONNECTION It’s tempting to just plug in your new A/V receiver an d have gre at sound pour out. Before you do that, take a few minutes to plan out how you wa nt the receiver to fit in to your audio/video system. Ask yourself the foll owing questions: y What source components do I want to c onnect to my receiver ? (CD, VCR, etc.
13 AUDIO / VIDEO CONNECTIONS Connecting your analog sources to y our receiver Audio / Video source - conne cting a DVD/VLD play er to the receiver’s analo g inputs. Use the same instructions for connecting to other audio / video sources such as a satellite receiver, cable box, etc.
14 Component Video - in addition to S-video and composite video switch ing, your receiver provides two sets of component video inputs for DV D and TV/DBS type inputs, and one set of component video outputs. Your receiver’s component video conn ections are passi ve to minimize the possi bility of video format compatibility issues.
15 DIGITAL CONNECTIONS Connect digital inputs (DVD, VLD, etc.) to the re ceiver. You will need either coax ial or optical digital inputs to play Dolby Digital (AC-3) or DTS surround sou nd processing. Digital connection s are also re commended for P CM sources.
16 SURROUND OUTPUTS Your receiver has multiple surround processor outputs for use with external amplifier(s) or po wered speakers. The AVR 315 receiver allows THX Surround EX compatibil it y via two Surround Back ‘S BACK’ processor outputs.

18 ANTENNA CONNECTIONS The FM jack is a stan dard screw on F-type connector. The AM is a push type. Strip ¼ inch of insulation off your AM antenna wires and insert one wire end into each hole whil e holding the tabs down. Release the tabs to lock in the AM antenna wires.
19 FREQUENTLY AS KED QUESTIONS My collection of equipment differs fr om the labels on the back of my recei ver, how can I hook them up? Your receiver provides 5 identical sets of inputs - V1, V2, DVD, CD, and SAT. Each of these has analo g audio, composite video, S-video, coaxial digital audio, and optical digital a udio.
20 My laser disc player (or other digital source) has only op tical output, but my CD recorder (or other digital recorder) has only coaxial input. Do I need some sort o f converter to make direct digital recordings? No, your receiver will conv ert optical to coaxial and coaxial to opti c al.
21 SETUP For best results, perform t he following set up procedure when you initially install your recei ver and anytime you change or add sources, sp eakers, etc. or when you rearrange your listening area THE MENU SYSTEM Setup of your receiver will require you to navigate through the me nu system .
22 SYSTEM SETUP You should always perform System Setup after first inst alling you r receiver and after adding/changin g speakers or sources or rearranging your listening area.
23 Set the size for your front left and righ t, ‘L’ and ’R’ speakers - You must have front speakers. From Remote From Front Panel Action 1 À (PAUSE) or § (STOP) (UP) or (DOWN) move to Speake.

27 Speaker Location Ideally your speakers will be the same dista nce away from your listening area. However, physical limitations usually require placing the spe aker in other than optim um locations. Your receiver co ntains a means to electronically move each speaker’s lo cation.
28 Speaker Levels Speaker level calibration al lows you to equalize the volume levels of each speaker to make up for differe nces in speaker characteristics and distan ces from the li stener to the speak ers.

31 Room Equalization Usually these settings may be left set to the factory defaults . However, theses settings allow for the correction of various tonal errors that occur during re production of audio in a ho me theater. The room equalization menu allows for two types of adjustments.

34 Display This menu allows you to set various aspec ts of your vi deo and front pan el displays. Make sure you are in the SETUP MENUS and your remote is in B&K mode.
35 Set the intensity of on-screen v ideo overlays - Overlays will appe ar when you chang e a receiver setting or your receiver detects a change in the i ncoming audio or vi de o information. Transp arent mode allows video to be seen behind the overlay.

38 Favorite audio listening mode continued Setting a favorite listening mode here will not preve nt t he system from automatically adjusting the listeni ng mode in response to bitstream in formation, nor will it prevent the user from changing mode s during normal ope ration.

41 Set component v ideo - Allows you to associate one of two component video inputs with each of your in put sources. When you choo se that source for viewing, the associat ed component video i nput will be rout ed to the component video output.
42 Presets Usually these settings may be left set to the factory d efaults . However, your receiver allows ‘fine tuning’ of how presets operate. Make sure you are in the SETUP MENUS and your remote is in B&K mode.
43 Generating a name when saving a preset - Whe n you save a preset, your system a utomatically generates a simple name for the pre set, which you can then chang e before confirming the preset sa ve.
44 MEMORY BACKUP Your receiver continually saves any se ttings you have made even if power is lost. However, you may wish to save a backup of your settings in case of inadvertent chang es to them. To perfo rm a backup, follow the procedure below. To restore backup settings perform the same proced ure bu t select restore in st ead of backup.
45 OPERATION The following outlines the normal d ay-to-day operation of your receiver from the supplied universal remote or directly from your receiver’s front panel. The universal remote is also capable of controlling other equipm ent and storing sequences of commonly used commands.
46 CHOOSING A SOURCE In general, the selected source will ap pear at the Zone 1 output, the TAPE ou tput, and the V1 output. To prevent feedback, TAPE input will not appear at TAPE output and V1 input will not appear at V1 output.

48 AUDIO MODES Your receiver is de signed to wo rk with 5 audio listen ing modes. Under normal operation you may simply select Mono, Stereo, Surround, THX or DVD Audio via the remo te control. In addition, you may choose a n audio listening mode immediately followed by a spe aker selectio n.
49 Audio Mode description MONO Sums the incoming audio information to a single channel a nd rout es it to the desired speaker. Use thi s mode for listening to the FM tuner with weak RF signal stre ngths. It is also useful in the ca se of a large listening group and it is difficult to put everyone near the optimum listening position.
50 Neo:6 Movie (Cinema) When listening to movies u sing the DTS Neo:6 m ovie de coder with stereo TV shows o r other surround-en coded programs, there is furthe r enhancement to soundfi eld direct ionality, which is clo se to the quality of discrete 6.
51 Special Considerations For use with multi-channel encoded bitstreams p ressing of SURROUND or THX toggles between th e Movie and Music playback options.
52 Why do I need all these audio modes? With the wide variety of audio source material ava ilable today, i.e. single channel mono, 2 channel mono, 2 channel stereo, 2 chann el surround and multi-channel encode d audio, we believe that the reproduction of this material is best handled in audio categories.
53 EQUALIZATION ‘EQ’ Selecting an EQ functio n via the remote control - all ows you to override how th e audio is cu rrently being processed. This is where you may se t the Dynamic Range to eit her Normal (default) or Limited for late night listening while processi ng Dolby Digital or DTS bit streams.

61 GETTING RECEIVER STATUS When you are not in a menu, pressing ENTER at any time will bring up a two or three line status message on Zone 1 video outputs.
62 ADVANCED FEATURES WARNING - The following describes the advanced features of the receive r. Since changing some of these functio ns may cau se severe eff ects su ch as no sou nd or no remote control operation, we suggest you leave this menu disabled (hidde n) for normal operati on.
63 Set the maximum level of Zone 1 (A) - Max level allows you to set a maximum volume level for Zone 1 (A). This is very useful if you are using speake rs that can’t handle the maxi mum power output from y our receiver or if you simply wish to limit the volume that can be achi eved using normal front panel or remote operation.

65 Set surround mode operation - Most users will prefer the facto ry setti ng - AUTO. In this mode the receiver automatically sets the surround mode to full 7.1 channel operation (or as many as pe rmitted by your speaker setup) whenever a Dolby Digital or DTS bitstream is detected regardless of what surround mode you have selected .
66 Zone 2 (B) Level Contr ol - You may wish to install an in -wall volume control in yo ur second zon e. This can cause confusion between y our receiver’s internal Zone 2 (B) volume controls an d your in-wall controls.
67 Set the Zone ID for Zone B - Each me ssage transmitted from your remo te includes a Product ID Code Set (See Zone ID), which allows in dependent co mmand and control of the receiver’s Zon es A and B. Set the desired zone ID number for use with Zo ne B (default 2).
68 Link Zone 2 (B) input to Zone 1 (A) input sele ction - Zon e 2 (B) input source sele ction may be linked with Zone 1 (A) source selection s. In operation, whenever a source selection is dete cted (remote, front panel or RS-232) on Zone 1 (A), source lin kage will cause the sou rce to be selected on both zones.
69 Power On Titles When you turn your receiver on it displays two line s of text. You can change this text to a person alized message. Make sure you are in the ADVANCED SYSTEM SETUP menu and the remote is in B&K mode.
70 Setup Control Out 1 Control out 1 is dedicated to Zone 1 (A) it can be p rogrammed to be on or off for each source. For example yo u may wish to use the control out to pull down a projection screen for your V1 and DVD source s but roll it up for Tuner and CD.
